In the Ruined Building, the Japanese Sniper was still closely watching the room that Tie Zhu had just entered, his gun barrel unmoving. As soon as Tie Zhu came out through the front door, he would take him out with a single shot.
"Mouse really has some patience, hiding for so long. Come out, Mouse! Come out!"
The Japanese Sniper murmured softly, his eyes scanning all visible areas—streets, windowsills, and other potential hiding spots—quickly sweeping over them every few seconds.
The sounds of gunfire from outside the town were getting closer, and the smile on the Japanese Sniper's face began to fade. No one wanted to fight alone in enemy territory; it was no different from walking to their death.
Outside Luodian, at Chuan Sha Kou, Beachhead,
The Japanese Army had begun landing once again. The small-caliber Naval Guns on the landing ships continuously bombarded the Nationalist Guard at the Beachhead. Although the caliber was small, the firing rate was high and the lethality was astonishing. The Nationalist Army, without solid cover, was relentlessly plowed under by Japanese artillery fire. A regiment of defenders had nearly all perished under Japanese bombardment in less than half an hour.
Accompanied by occasional blasts from large-caliber Naval Guns, the Nationalist Guard on the beachhead was systematically wiped out by the Japanese Army.
Japanese Soldiers surged ashore like a tide. Rifle and Machine Gun bullets, along with Naval Gun shells formed a barrage. This time, the Japanese were not stingy with their ammunition; Bombers in the sky continuously dropped deadly bombs, taking away the lives of Kuomintang Soldiers.
The first wave of Japanese Soldiers to reach the beachhead quickly set up Mortars. The curved trajectory became a nightmare for the Nationalist Army hiding in trenches. Heavy fire points were knocked out one by one as the entire beachhead slowly fell into Japanese hands. More and more Japanese Soldiers secured their foothold on the beachhead, while some began preparing to encircle the Nationalist Guard.
"Commander, we need to retreat! We can't hold the beachhead any longer; the Japanese firepower is too fierce! Our troops can't withstand it! If we keep holding on, we'll be encircled!"
A Major General Staff member, wearing a crooked helmet and braving artillery fire, staggered into the division command post. He shouted loudly at the indecisive Commander. He had just conducted an inspection outside; if it weren't for his guards, he might have already met his end.
The Nationalist Army Commander clenched his fists until veins bulged, his eyes filled with rage. Finally, he slowly released his grip in defeat: "Let's retreat! Let's retreat... sigh!"
After issuing the retreat order, the Nationalist Army Commander slumped into his chair as if that single word had drained all his strength. They were retreating again; they hadn't fired a shot in Dong San Province and now Beijing was lost too. All of North China lay under the iron heel of the Japanese invaders, and now they had to retreat again. They lost the beachhead; behind them was Luodian, then Shanghai, and further back was Nanjing. Where else could they go?
Seeing the Commander’s vacant eyes, the Chief of Staff sighed: "Commander, don’t blame yourself too much. We fought well; it’s just that the Japanese Army's artillery is too strong. Even if our soldiers fought to their last breath, it wouldn’t change anything. As long as our troops remain intact, we still have hope!"
"Hope? What hope? Tell me! Behind us is Luodian; behind that is Shanghai; behind that is Nanjing. China is this big...!"
The Nationalist Army Commander grew increasingly furious as he spoke, finally slamming his hands down on the table before wearily standing up. He accepted a coat sent by a guard and glanced around the command post before leaving with his head down.
After driving back the first wave of landing Japanese Soldiers into the sea, ammunition had not been resupplied and troop strength was insufficient. It was already fortunate that they could withstand the first round of Japanese artillery fire.
The Nationalist Guard began to abandon the Beachhead, retreating in a state of chaos, akin to throwing away their helmets and armor. However, the Japanese Soldier did not pursue them; instead, they occupied the Nationalist Army's positions and began to fortify their defenses.
At sea, in the Japanese Operational Command Center.
"General, the Beachhead has been cleared of remaining enemies. The Chinese Soldier has abandoned the Beachhead and fled. Our forces have established a solid Beachhead and can commence large-scale landings!"
General Matsui Ishigen nodded, revealing a satisfied smile. "Send the orders down. Let the subsequent landing troops hurry to land. This time, we absolutely cannot let the Chinese be driven back into the sea. We must completely occupy Shanghai within ten days. Inform the vanguard troops to swiftly capture Luodian. Once we take Luodian, capturing Shanghai will be a piece of cake!"
"Yes!"
With a command from Matsui Shigen, part of the Japanese landing troops began to assemble, resupplying ammunition and moving towards Luodian.
Inside Luodian Town,
Tie Zhu explored three or four rooms before arriving at a Ruined Building.
Looking up at the small building that had been reduced to ruins by bombing, with some flames still flickering, Tie Zhu instinctively thought that there should be no one inside and decided to go around it.
"Let's go take a look!"
A different voice echoed in his mind, urging Tie Zhu to go upstairs and check it out. He frowned for a moment, bit his lip, and ultimately decided to go up; after all, checking a building wouldn’t take too long.
He cautiously stepped into the Ruined Building, careful not to make a sound.
This building was a small concrete structure that had been directly hit by Japanese artillery. The interior had been scorched by fire; however, even so, Tie Zhu could tell from the remnants inside that it was likely a wealthy person's residence. Concrete is not cheap; being able to construct a small building with materials like concrete suggests it belonged to someone of status.
There were still some unburned flames flickering inside, making crackling sounds.
Tie Zhu slowly approached the staircase, carefully avoiding various debris on the floor and daring not to make a sound. Even though he believed there was no one in this building, he remained cautious.
On the second floor, a Japanese Sniper remained focused on lying flat on the ground, his eyes scanning all possible areas where enemies might appear within his line of sight, like a radar sweeping every few seconds. However, he primarily kept an eye on the room where Tie Zhu had just hidden.
"The mouse still hasn't come out!"
Japanese Sniper muttered quietly, completely unaware that Tie Zhu was already downstairs, gradually approaching.
It took Tie Zhu a few minutes to walk from the front door to the staircase. The clutter inside was overwhelming, so much so that Tie Zhu had to be careful with every step, afraid to touch anything that might make too much noise.
At the staircase
Tie Zhu kept his eyes fixed on the upper floor, slowly making his way up step by step.
In the middle of the stairs, a thin thread was stretched across. The thread was very fine; if one did not look closely, it would be nearly impossible to notice that there was even a thread here.
Tie Zhu's attention was entirely focused on the second floor as he carefully climbed the stairs, not noticing that there was still a thin thread in front of him.
"Bang!" A faint sound echoed, very soft. Tie Zhu only felt his leg bump into something. Just as he lowered his head to see what it was, a loud explosion rang out.
The impact of the explosion and shrapnel from the Grenade turned Tie Zhu into a sieve, and he felt himself being thrown backward.
"It hurts, it really hurts!"
The pain felt like his soul was being torn apart once again, and then Tie Zhu felt darkness enveloping him.
When Tie Zhu opened his eyes again, he found himself standing unharmed on the second floor of a Small Building. He carefully observed the surroundings of the room; this was a room he had just searched.
