After a brief meeting, Hu Lian confirmed the subsequent combat strategy. With insufficient troops to occupy the entire town and lacking a significant advantage in weaponry, he could only choose to adopt a passive defense.
Hu Lian sighed inwardly. He had over a thousand men, including the recently arrived reinforcements. It was enough to defend not just a small town but even a small county.
However, the problem was that his forces consisted mostly of new recruits who lacked combat effectiveness. He could only disperse the Veterans among the new soldiers to help improve the overall combat capability of the unit, with one Veteran paired with two new recruits.
Tie Zhu became the squad leader. His previous combat performance had been outstanding, and he had achieved significant results, which led to his exceptional promotion. It had been less than four months since he enlisted, and today was his first day on the battlefield.
Tie Zhu found a secluded spot and bowed his head a few times in the direction of his hometown. "Shunliu Brother, I've become a squad leader now. Don't worry, I will do my best and kill more enemies to avenge you!"
After saying this, he stood up decisively and returned to his unit.
Tie Zhu was now the squad leader of the Fifth Squad in the First Battalion's Second Company. There were still two Veterans in the squad: one named Yu Dayong and the other named Shang Dahai. Like Tie Zhu, they were both true farmers by background. Dayong was from Fujian and had enlisted earlier, participating in several battles; however, due to his usually dull demeanor, he had never been promoted.
Shang Dahai was from Zhejiang and was said to be from the same hometown as someone from Nanjing. Today was also his first time on the battlefield. He was a genuine fisherman with dark skin and a robust physique compared to Tie Zhu and others; he served as the squad's Machine Gunner.
The Machine Gun was a Type 92 Heavy Machine Gun that Tie Zhu had captured. Hu Lian clearly did not forget about Tie Zhu; after hearing that Tie Zhu had become a squad leader following their meeting, he immediately sent over a Light Machine Gun along with three thousand rounds of ammunition.
The new Company Commander of One Team expressed some dissatisfaction regarding Hu Lian's decision to reassign their Machine Gun; however, upon seeing Tie Zhu's captured Type 92 Heavy Machine Gun, he immediately broke into a smile.
Tie Zhu sat on the steps of a Small Building nearby, where sandbags had been piled up to create a defensive position. This was his area of responsibility, and their task in the Fifth Squad was to hold this narrow alley.
"My name is Zhao Tiezhu; I am your squad leader..." After Tie Zhu finished speaking, he fell silent, as he was at a loss for how to introduce himself further.
Shang Dahai sat to the side, holding a Machine Gun and smiling as he wiped the weapon. The new recruits around him looked at the machine gun with envy; it was the dream of all new soldiers.
Yu Dayong stared straight ahead, placing his weapon on his left side. If it weren't for a finger constantly tapping on the ground, one might think he had fallen asleep.
Noticing the awkward silence, Shang Dahai scratched his head and cleared his throat twice. "Well, why don't you all introduce yourselves? Let the squad leader get to know where you're from and what skills you have."
The six new recruits exchanged glances, and finally, the most active one spoke up first. He had been fidgeting since the beginning. "Is no one going to go first? If no one is, I'll introduce myself. Report, Squad Leader, my name is..."
He had just stood up to salute Tie Zhu when Tie Zhu pressed him back down. "Are you trying to get yourself killed? The enemy is right around us; do you want to stand up and be a target?"
Tie Zhu glared at the young man with anger. He had no fondness for this recruit. Although he had only been in the army for a few months, Tie Zhu was somewhat dull-witted and often bullied, especially by those restless recruits who liked to fidget.
"Thank you, Squad Leader. I will be careful; I won't stand up again. Report, Squad Leader, my name is Zhou Wei, from Nanjing. I joined the army to fight the enemy. The Chairman said that land knows no north or south, age knows no young or old; everyone has the responsibility to defend their territory, so here I am."
As Zhou Wei spoke, he half-squatted on the ground and gave Tie Zhu a military salute, looking as comical as possible.
I would also like to express my gratitude to those who support me. I have another book titled "Rebirth: Stealing from All Over the World," which is about to reach a million words. I hope everyone will support it.
