“Creak~~”
Jiang Yizhou had somewhat given up on hiding and simply opened the door, “Mom, this is where I live.”
Gao Qingzhen was a bit cautious. It wasn't until Jiang Yizhou handed her a pair of large blue slippers that she changed her shoes and walked in.
“Yizhou, son, big brother, renting this place must cost quite a bit, right?” Gao Qingzhen looked at the two-bedroom apartment. Although it was somewhat old, it was nicely decorated and organized; at least it seemed quite expensive to her, prompting her to call her son by three different titles.
“It’s not expensive at all. I’m sharing it with someone else; we split the rent. Besides, didn’t I tell you? I need to find a job here, and how can I not rent a place nearby?” Jiang Yizhou explained, glancing around the room, seemingly finding no one there.
His mother, who had just sat down, started busying herself in the kitchen looking for a cloth and a broom to clean up the room for her son.
Jiang Yizhou took his luggage back to his bedroom. The first thing he saw was a note taped to the wall. The first few lines contained the name of a company, its address, and contact information, followed by handwriting from Qin Yi:
The school is organizing military training for new students. I need to leave for three weeks starting from the second. The information above was obtained from a phone call made on August 31st; they are very interested in your plan. If you see this, please reply quickly! Delaying matters would be bad!
It was signed off with the name Qin Yi.
Jiang Yizhou felt once again that he might have missed something important. He couldn't let an opportunity slip through his fingers just because he relaxed for a moment!
After putting away his luggage and changing into formal attire, Jiang Yizhou immediately picked up the phone and dialed the number on the note.
“Son, is that... your roommate's clothes hanging outside?”
While dialing the number, Jiang Yizhou impatiently replied, “If it's not mine, then it's hers! Mom, I need to make a call; don’t disturb me!”
After ringing a few times, the call was quickly connected. “Hello, this is Yinghaiwei Company. How can I help you?”
Jiang Yizhou analyzed the information from the note. He hadn’t expected Yinghaiwei to respond to him; he had essentially sent out mass inquiries to well-known companies involved in the Internet sector.
“I am Jiang Yizhou. On the 31st of last month, your company called me regarding my plan. I wasn’t in Beijing at that time…”
"Okay, just a moment, let me check, and I'll call you back!"
Then the call was abruptly disconnected. Jiang Yizhou felt a bit anxious; this was entirely one-sided urgency. He regarded this venture as very important for his future, but others in this era were not interested at all.
Even when IQ first emerged, no one invested in it. It was only after the user base skyrocketed that people began to recognize its value—some followed the trend, some invested, and some acquired it.
"Son, you don't have any vegetables here. How are you going to cook lunch?" Gao Qingzhen pondered how to make lunch for her son, but the empty kitchen had nothing but the means to make plain noodles or rice.
Sitting by the phone, Jiang Yizhou clasped his hands in front of his chest and thought for a moment. His mother was new to the city and didn't know her way around. He couldn't leave either. "Mom, if you go downstairs, you'll see a restaurant. I can't get away right now, so why don't you eat there and bring me back a takeout?"
Gao Qingzhen understood her son's reasoning and took the money he handed her. Jiang Yizhou said, "Just buy something casual!"
...
After Gao Qingzhen went downstairs, she looked at the menu on the wall of a restaurant but found the prices too high and left worriedly. On the way, she stopped someone who looked like they knew where to buy groceries and asked, "Excuse me, do you know where I can buy groceries? I'm new to Beijing and don't know my way around!"
The plump woman in her forties stopped and pointed down an eastward road. "Follow this road for three intersections, then head north; that's where the market is!"
Still feeling a bit stingy about spending money, Gao Qingzhen thanked her and hurried toward the market.
When Jiang Yizhou finally heard his mother returning, he called out to her with a drawn-out voice, "Mom, where have you been? Why are you back so late?"
"The dishes at that restaurant were too expensive; I didn't want to buy anything. I bought groceries instead. Just wait a moment; I'll cook rice right away and stir-fry some vegetables for you!" Gao Qingzhen complained more about the high prices in the city; everything seemed expensive.
"Mom, I just want to eat sooner; I've been hungry for so long! And do you think I don't know the restaurant's prices?" Jiang Yizhou suspected that whoever he was trying to reach on the phone had probably already finished work and that he was waiting in vain.
"It's just a little delay in eating! I still have some marinated chicken feet in my bag that you didn't eat on the train; have some of those to fill your stomach!" Gao Qingzhen completely ignored her son's complaints and busied herself washing rice and vegetables.
About half an hour later, Gao Qingzhen finished cooking and set the table. She called out to her son, "Don't wait anymore! You've waited long enough; come eat! I made eggplant and loofah—your favorites!"
Jiang Yizhou sighed; the phone wasn't going anywhere, so he obediently went to the dining table.
"Where's your roommate? I haven't seen her!" Gao Qingzhen spoke up at the dining table, paying close attention to the women's clothes hanging on the balcony. How could she live with a woman? Could she be her son's girlfriend?
"She's on a business trip and won't be back for about twenty days. But I don't have her key, so I can't use her bedroom. Why don't you stay at a hotel? Or you can stay in my room, and I'll sleep on the sofa!" Jiang Yizhou said, a bit impatiently, as he wolfed down his food without hiding anything.
"No need for that. I just came to see if you're lying to me. By the way, do you still have the money you brought from home? And take me to your company to see if you really have a job!" Gao Qingzhen recalled her purpose for coming to Beijing.
After seeing her son's impressive apartment and his stylish clothes, she was already convinced, at least eighty or ninety percent. It seemed like he even had a girlfriend, just like those influential people, though she couldn't understand it all, but it felt impressive.
"Let's talk about that after dinner!" Jiang Yizhou brushed it off.
"No way! We need to settle this quickly; it's almost busy season at home, and there’s still a lot to do. Have you bought the tickets?" Gao Qingzhen was relentless.
"I'll buy the tickets this afternoon. Don't worry about the other things, okay?" Jiang Yizhou sighed repeatedly, feeling overwhelmed but understanding that he just couldn't accept it.
He had gotten used to living freely by himself. Even with a roommate of the opposite sex, they respected each other's space and had never caused any conflicts.
Jiang Yizhou's mind was filled with thoughts on how to keep his mother distracted and send her back home on the train!
