Ji Zhongxue muttered a low curse, momentarily stunned by the person pressed beneath her. It was truly an ugly individual, with a face full of red bumps and the left half of their face covered in a layer of dirt. Their hair was also messy, slightly damp as if they had just washed it and hadn’t had time to comb it. The hair fell over most of their forehead, making it hard to distinguish whether they were male or female.
"Who are you?"
As soon as he spoke, San Chun felt relieved, grateful for the fleas and mosquitoes that had rendered her unrecognizable.
She pushed him with all her strength, shouting, "Where did this madman come from? So shameless!"
She had wanted to yell this at him for a long time, and finally expressing it brought her immense satisfaction. It seemed that even the pain from being pressed down by him didn’t hurt as much anymore, and a faint smile crept onto her lips. It was a strange kind of laughter mixed with pain.
Zhong Xue couldn’t tell what this person was laughing about; instinctively, she felt something was off about them. She shifted away from him and looked around, realizing they were in a trap meant for capturing wild beasts, and he had actually believed some ridiculous sign...
"This trap has no one here?" There was clearly a trap right beneath them, and it was quite large.
Looking down, he noticed he still held that broken Boat Plank and angrily tossed it aside. Which idiot had put it up there? It caused him to misstep and fall.
San Chun also saw the Boat Plank and couldn’t help but touch her nose. Was it his stupidity or bad luck that made him fall like that?
It wasn’t entirely her fault; she had carved "This trap has no one here" on the Boat Plank, but she wasn’t wrong either—there indeed was a trap here, and not far away there was another one.
It was bad enough that he fell; the worst part was that she almost suffocated when he landed on her. If he had killed her, she would have felt embarrassed facing Yama about how she died.
Zhong Xue fell heavily; if it weren’t for this unfortunate soul acting as a cushion beneath him, she would likely have suffered a fracture by now. He couldn’t climb back up immediately and could only stay in this confined space for a while.
There was water in a jar; he took some to drink and noticed fish wrapped in leaves nearby, taking some without asking. It was as if San Chun were merely an ornament and there was no owner here at all.
Eating the tender fish meat, a woman swimming in the water came to his mind. Her skin must be as fair and smooth as this fish meat. He had always been indifferent and was not particularly anxious about matters concerning Wushan, but today, upon seeing that woman, he felt a stirring in his lower abdomen, as if a long-hidden desire was about to surge forth.
Was it because that woman resembled him? Lately, he didn't know what was happening; no matter where he went, he would encounter people who looked like him.
Was he seeing ghosts, or were the ghosts coming to see him?
San Chun watched as he swallowed his lunch bite by bite, momentarily unable to think of any words to stop him. The man's aura was too overwhelming; just sitting there made it hard to breathe and left her dry-mouthed, rendering her speechless.
Taking a deep breath, she finally managed to utter a few words: "You... trespass into private homes..."
Zhong Xue glanced around, clearly disdainful. "Is this a private home?"
San Chun also felt that the term "home" was somewhat forced. After thinking for a moment, she replied, "You... take without asking."
Zhong Xue ignored her and simply pulled out a money pouch from his pocket and tossed it over. It was heavy; with a loud "thud," it hit the ground and created a dent.
Just by looking at that dent, she knew it contained quite a bit. Her heart stirred, but she stubbornly said, "Do you think you can act recklessly just because you have money?"
He did not respond but pointed at the clay pot, indicating for her to pour some water.
She really wanted to be strong-willed, but her hands and feet betrayed her as she obediently filled a bowl with water. She held it out to him but secretly regretted not having put some laxative in it beforehand.
Zhong Xue glanced at her and took the bowl to drink.
His childhood experiences had left him with deep psychological scars; he hated being touched by others and disliked anyone getting close to him—whether men or women. He never ate outside and would never consume food offered by strangers.
But for some reason, in this small space, guarding this ugly woman with a face full of red beans, he felt very at ease. Perhaps it was because he was too thirsty; after downing a bowl of water in one go and still feeling unsatisfied, he poured another bowl, drinking while furrowing his brows tightly.
In this desolate wilderness, how could someone like her be hiding here?
He put down the bowl of water and asked her, "Who are you?"
"I'm from the State of Chu."
"Why are you here?"
San Chun began to think, but he really couldn't figure out why he was stuck in this predicament. After a while, he finally blurted out, "I have nowhere to go."
Between the Seven Kingdoms, years of warfare had left many people displaced, wandering in foreign lands. Pretending to be a homeless person was the most believable act. Of course, her situation was also true; she had indeed been chased to the point of having no home.
When she took out her belongings, her bundle spread open without being tidied up. Clothes and herbs were scattered all over the ground, among a few pieces of clothing lay a jade pendant.
Zhong Xue had seen it long ago but did not bring it up; she just sat aside, glancing at her casually.
She couldn't help but wonder if this was the woman who saved him at Horse Riding Slope. No wonder she wouldn't reveal who she was back then; it turned out it was because she was ugly.
She must have seen him before, yet now she acted as if they were strangers. Had she forgotten him, or was she afraid to acknowledge him?
With many doubts swirling in his mind, he looked at her a few more times and felt increasingly that this person looked familiar. Why did she resemble that person so much?
Suddenly moving, he said, "Since you have nowhere to go, come back with This Lord to my residence."
San Chun was startled and hurriedly shook her head, "I am of low status and do not deserve your grace."
Zhong Xue smiled slightly, looking at her thoughtfully for a long time before saying, "You are this Lord's benefactor; it is only right."
He reached into the pile of clothes and pulled out the jade pendant, rubbing it gently. The texture was excellent; it was indeed the one he had.
This jade pendant was originally meant to be given to someone else. He had searched throughout the Seven Kingdoms to find this warm jade, but in the end, he never handed it over and it ended up in the hands of the person before him. Could this be fate?
It would be inappropriate to ask for something back that had already been given away, so he tossed the pendant back into the distance. Then he gathered her pile of straw and lay down in the spot where she had been sleeping.
San Chun was surprised, "What are you doing, my lord?"
Zhong Xue smiled, "I think this place is quite nice; I might as well rest here."
She pouted in anger, feeling wronged. If she felt mistreated, she should just roll away. Why was he occupying her bed? But ultimately, she did not dare to kick him away. After all, it was because of his momentary distraction that she had managed to get close to him at Fengling Duke's Residence. Now that she couldn't leave, provoking him again would be akin to seeking her own demise.
Zhong Xue sighed comfortably. Once he lay down, he realized that this place was indeed quite good. Not only was the air fresh, but there was also an indescribable sense of security. It easily led him into memories of a day long ago when he had hunted in the mountains with him.
