San Chun was half a head taller than her, looking down at her for a while, and for some reason, let out a sigh.
"Since you are so close to him, why did he still want you to see me?"
Ying's face turned pale instantly. Her previously smug expression changed immediately as she shouted, "Do you think he asked me to bring you here because he still has feelings for you?"
San Chun sighed again. A person lacking confidence could easily be forced to reveal their true self. Even if she had been intimate with Ji Xun, so what? If he truly liked her, how could she be like this?
Not wanting to drag the conversation further, she asked, "What does Ji Xun want from you?"
"He has already prepared a place for you to wait for him."
"Okay."
Ying couldn't believe it. "Are you really going?"
San Chun nodded. She had come this time specifically to see him. Whatever the truth was, she would know once she asked him. Would she obediently go home just because Ying pressured her?
"You lead the way."
Reluctantly, Ying gritted her teeth and then immediately put on a bright smile, her change of expression as quick as Zhong Xue.
"Then let's go; the carriage is outside."
Seeing her like this, San Chun couldn't help but sigh again. Back in the day, she often saw Ying and Zhong Xue together and thought she liked Zhong Xue, but it turned out she was infatuated with Ji Xun.
Turning back to the Embroiderer's Workshop, she gave a few instructions to several Embroideress, then picked up her bundle. She wasn't one of the people from Jiyan Manor, so there was no need for her to say goodbye. After getting ready, she stood in front of Ying again and said, "Let's go."
Ying secretly gritted her teeth and then smiled as she led the way ahead.
After leaving the residence, Zhong Yi, who was waiting by the carriage, was somewhat incredulous when he saw San Chun in Female Attire. He quickly stepped over and asked, "Do you have an older brother?"
San Chun smiled and replied, "Yes."
"Is his name San Chun?"
"Yes."
Zhong Yi was overjoyed, rubbing his hands together as he said, "I am Zhong Yi, a warrior from the young master's residence." He had liked San Chun for a long time and was pleasantly surprised to meet his sister.
Seeing his eagerness to be friendly was amusing to San Chun, who didn't want to reveal that she was actually San Chun. She decided to let him continue misunderstanding.
When Ying noticed that she and Zhong Yi were acquainted, she ground her teeth in frustration. When Zhong Yi asked her where she was going, she bluntly replied, "Shut up."
Zhong Yi ignored her and turned back to talk to San Chun, both of them laughing while leaving her aside.
Ying had no time to care about them; she was thinking about something very important. Ji Xun wanted her to bring someone back to the residence, but she didn't want to do that. So where should she arrange for this person to go?
She remembered that she had an older brother from her maternal family who was quite notorious in Handan City. It would be perfect to leave the person with him.
If it were in the past, even with borrowed courage, she wouldn't dare lay a hand on Yan Dan. But now, as a nameless soldier without any connections, no one would question it even if he died. Since she didn't want to die herself, she would personally send him to his death. When Ji Xun asked about it later, she would simply say he had left. As for Zhong Yi, she had her own ways of keeping him quiet.
The carriage stopped, and from the outside, it looked like a small courtyard. Two stone pillars stood at the entrance, and there were couplets pasted on the door, giving off a homely vibe.
San Chun had always wanted a home like this, to be with the person she loved and live a simple and ordinary life. She had shared this wish with Ji Xun, who once promised her that he would give her a home in the future where she could stay alone whenever she felt troubled and return to herself when she felt better.
At that time, she was very happy and asked him with a smile, "Would you be willing to live with me?"
"Yes, I will be your neighbor."
At that time, they had not yet revealed their feelings for each other, but they both shared a common dream for the future; they wanted to live a stable life together, believing that as long as they were together, everything would be fine.
Upon seeing this courtyard, she suddenly felt a surge of joy. Could it be that Ji Xun was fulfilling his promise from the past and really giving her a courtyard? She felt a sense of anticipation, hoping he would peek over the wall from next door and smile at her, saying, "I am your neighbor; please take care of me in the future."
Ying knocked on the door, and when it opened, it was not Ji Xun who came out, but a somewhat disheveled man in slippers. He looked to be in his twenties and was fairly decent-looking.
Seeing them, the man showed a look of surprise. Ying chatted with him for a moment, and he nodded. Turning to San Chun, he smiled brightly and said, "This must be the young lady. Don't worry about staying here; perhaps the young master will come by tonight."
San Chun asked, "Who are you?"
"I am from the young master's residence. The young master asked me to manage things here for now. The place is simple; please make do for the time being. When the young master arrives, I will arrange for you to move to a better place."
He smiled and bowed slightly to let her in. Zhong Yi wanted to follow but was stopped by Ying. "You wait here."
Zhong Yi was puzzled. "Why should I stay outside?"
"You are a servant."
He gritted his teeth; he was a servant—what was she? Not wanting to argue with a girl, he could only wait outside by the carriage.
Upon entering the courtyard, she found it very simple inside. The room was roughly arranged and did not look like it belonged to a woman at all. San Chun frowned, thinking that while the people in this residence spoke beautifully, their actions were rather lacking. This hardly seemed like a place that had been waiting for her arrival.
Ying hurriedly exchanged a few words before leaving, leaving only the man smiling as he attended to San Chun.
San Chun felt suspicious; the more she looked at him, the more she sensed something was off. She asked, "What is your name?"
"Liu Ying."
"What do you do in the residence?"
"At Doorman."
"Why is everything here for men?" The clothes hanging on the bamboo pole in the courtyard were men's, and the shoes and cabinets inside were very masculine. There was even a pair of underpants thrown on the bed, clearly taken off because they were dirty.
Liu Ying hurriedly explained, "This was bought on a whim by the Young Master, and there hasn't been time to tidy up. The master was anxious to see you and brought you here early. It turns out that a man, a bachelor, used to live here. You know how men can be; their living spaces are naturally messy."
His response was flawless, but San Chun didn't fully trust him and decided to observe further.
Zhong Yi had been guarding the door and asked when the Young Master had arranged for someone to stay here, as he was unaware of it.
Ying smiled brightly, " Brother Yi, get in the carriage first. I'll explain everything once we're on our way."
Zhong Yi felt goosebumps rise on his skin. Brother Yi? When did she start speaking like that?
He followed her into the carriage, which slowly made its way to the Young Master's residence. Zhong Yi repeatedly pressed Ying for answers, but she refused to divulge anything, only smiling at him, making him feel uneasy.
As the carriage approached the entrance of the residence, she suddenly pulled open her clothing and whispered, "Brother Yi, what do you think would happen if we suddenly shouted right now?"
Cold sweat broke out on Zhong Yi. Young Master Ji Xun despised any warrior who disrespected the women of the household. He had worked hard to secure this position and did not want to lose it easily.
Seeing his fearful expression, Ying smirked coldly, "If you're sensible, just keep quiet about what you see today; otherwise, you'll regret it."
Zhong Yi nodded.
Seeing him comply, she slowly put her clothes back on and leisurely arranged her hair before stepping down from the carriage like a noble princess.
Zhong Yi spat quietly at her back; no matter how much she pretended to be noble, she was still just a maid.
Today, the King was quite talkative and engaged him in many conversations until Young Master Ji Xun returned home. As soon as he got out of the carriage, his first action was to call for Ying and inquire about San Chun.
Ying smiled and said, "Young Master, this is quite unfortunate. That San Chun is not actually from the Six Young Master's residence; she is an embroideress from the Embroiderer's Workshop. When I went to the residence, she had already left. Young Master, people can be similar, just like the taste of tea; you can't determine someone's identity based solely on a cup of tea."
Ji Xun fell silent for a moment before suddenly calling out, "Someone—"
Zhong Yi pushed the door open and entered, saying, "Your Highness commands."
"Go check which Embroiderer's Workshop in Handan City has someone named San Chun."
"Yes." Zhong Yi exited, glancing at Ying as he left.
Ying gave him a look that seemed to suggest he should take it easy.
Take it easy? Zhong Yi snorted heavily. How unfortunate he was to be threatened by a wicked woman.
It was late at night, and San Chun had not waited for Ji Xun to arrive. Liu Ying had been with her, saying that perhaps the Young Master was too busy and would return late; he would definitely come to see her tomorrow.
With his words, San Chun's suspicions grew stronger. When she went to sleep at night, she deliberately placed a sword beside her. Ever since leaving Niushan Village, she had kept the sword close at hand. Thanks to this sword, she had avoided danger along the way.
Lying on the bed fully clothed, she thought to herself that if this person had no ill intentions, it would be fine; but if he did have ill intentions, she would make him pay with his blood.
Around the third watch of the night, suddenly there was a soft sound at the door as someone slipped in from outside, holding a sharp knife.
Moonlight streamed through the window and illuminated the face of the intruder. What had initially been a somewhat handsome face was now twisted with ferocity. He slowly walked to the bedside and suddenly lunged with the knife towards the person wrapped in blankets.
As the knife plunged into the bedding, sensing something was wrong, it was already too late for him to escape. A sword pressed against his neck. "Who are you?"
"Liu Ying."
"Who told you to kill me?"
"Yes... Young Master, the Young Master does not want to see you, which is why he asked me to take action."
San Chun kicked him hard in the leg, and Liu Ying fell to the ground. When he fell, his head hit the bed, causing him to cry out in pain.
The sword pressed deeper, "Who exactly are you?"
He shouted, "It really is the Young Master."
San Chun did not believe it; how could Ji Xun possibly be so ruthless?
"Why would he do this?"
Liu Ying replied, "The Queen has long found a good match for the Young Master, so he naturally would not allow an unidentified woman to enter. He asked me to kill her out of fear of being punished by the Queen."
These were the words that the nightingale taught her, and indeed, San Chun's expression changed slightly.
But it only changed for a moment before returning to normal. If she did not know Ji Xun too well, she might have been deceived by his words. How could someone like Ji Xun care about fame and status?
