“Today's mission is to patrol the southern area of the Underworld. Try to sweep through the Minotaurs and retrieve their horns as proof. The academy will reward us based on the number of Minotaurs we kill.”
Jim briefly introduced the mission and was about to call everyone down.
Since Daniel arrived, Simon, who had always been very arrogant as if everyone owed him hundreds of Magic Stones, suddenly spoke up, “Wait a minute, Jim. I agreed to take you all on this mission at your request, but I don't want to bring along any useless people. Everyone should share their abilities so we can understand each other.”
“I'll go first. I am a First-Level Wizard Apprentice, skilled in the Fireball Spell, capable of casting five fireballs in ten seconds.”
Upon hearing this, everyone looked at him in surprise; they didn't expect his speed to be so fast. Normally, it takes at least three to four seconds for someone to cast a Fireball Spell. He could do it in two seconds each—too fast, astonishingly so.
After hearing this, Osmon also introduced himself. “First-Level Wizard Apprentice, proficient in Light Magic, able to heal minor injuries.”
Daniel felt increasingly uneasy; he thought these people didn’t seem that impressive. He opened his chip to take a closer look.

How could this be?
Jim already knew that the others were lacking. It was unrealistic to expect everyone to be as talented as him. It was already impressive that Jim had advanced to First-Level Apprentice in just over two years.
Many apprentices might not become official apprentices even after four or five years.
But why were Simon and Osmon also First-Level Apprentices? This simply didn't make sense; he had already advanced to Level Two some time ago without telling anyone. It had only been a little over two years.
Simon and his group were apprentices from the previous cohort, having several more years of learning than him, yet they were still First-Level Apprentice. The gap was too large.
How could such a situation arise?
He originally thought that Jim invited him to gain experience by following Simon and Osmon, who were Second-Level Apprentice, ensuring safety, which was why they dared to go to the Underworld.
Unexpectedly, it turned out to be an expedition organized by a group of First-Level Apprentice.
What significance did it have for him to follow along? The difference between First-Level Apprentice and Second-Level Apprentice was already huge. Following them, Daniel felt like he was just hanging out with friends. He didn't want to waste time playing babysitter.
Could it be that the previous cohort of apprentices had some hidden cards up their sleeves that made them unafraid of Second-Level Apprentice?
Thinking of this, he couldn't help but ask, “Simon, I heard you excel at the Fireball Spell, able to cast five fireballs in ten seconds. Is that true? Can you show me?”
Simon looked at him arrogantly and said lightly, “What do you mean? Do you not believe in my strength? I know you've been doing well in the academy these past two years, but that's only because I didn't bother to deal with you.
Since that's the case, let me show you that the power of the previous cohort is not something you can compare to. Don't blame me for bullying you; come at me!”
Jim quickly grabbed Daniel, saying, “Daniel just hasn't seen someone as powerful as you and wants to learn; how could he dare to compete with a senior?”
He kept giving Daniel frantic looks, urging him to apologize.
Daniel patted his shoulder and stepped forward. “In that case, let me see your skills.”
With that, he recited an incantation, and a fireball shot forward, taking only one second for the entire process.
Simon, still standing with his hands behind his back, didn’t react in time. When he saw the fireball coming at him, he was so startled that he shivered all over and awkwardly dove to the side.
Simon's face turned red with anger. “Daniel, we are just sparring; why did you use Magical Items? Do you want to kill someone?”
He took out his staff and began to chant a spell. Soon, a fireball appeared at the tip of the staff and shot towards Daniel. At the same time, he continued chanting, quickly forming another fireball.
Daniel seemed stunned, not moving at all. Only when the fireball was about to hit him did he use the Fire Shield Spell to block it, allowing the two to cancel each other out. After that, he made no further movements.
Simon secretly laughed. He had thought that Daniel's provocation meant he had some kind of backing, but he didn't expect that he couldn't even handle the basics of combat.
What Simon didn't know was that Daniel wasn't taking this seriously; he was secretly pondering other issues.
It took Simon 19 seconds to launch a fireball. Given how strained he looked, it was already impressive that he could cast five Fireball Spells in ten seconds.
Among this generation of apprentices, Daniel was certainly impressive. He had seen Jim, an apprentice of Dark Gift, being highly regarded by his mentor, but there was still a significant gap.
However, Daniel was from the previous generation of apprentices, which made him seem somewhat lacking.
Seeing Simon's furious expression, as if he wanted to kill someone, it didn't look like he had any tricks up his sleeve. Was this really his true level?
With someone like him being the strongest in this team, what could he do in the Underworld? Be a babysitter? He wasn't that idle yet.
For a moment, Daniel felt somewhat disheartened. He held the blazing fireball loosely and said, "Senior, I suddenly feel a bit unwell. I won't be going to the Underworld today. Let's part ways here; I hope you can overlook any inconveniences."
Simon had just launched five fireballs and was already exhausted, panting heavily. Hearing Daniel's words, he thought it was mockery and felt his face flush with anger. However, seeing how neatly Daniel handled the Fireball Spell attack made him realize the vast difference between them. His lips moved slightly but ultimately remained silent.
The others looked at Daniel as if he were a monster, especially Jim. This time he had finally convinced Simon to take him to the Underworld and had even incurred a debt of gratitude for it.
He had seen Daniel's development over the past two years and wanted to pull him in closer but didn't expect such a situation to arise. If he had known this would happen, he wouldn't have brought Daniel along.
Others might not know it, but Jim certainly did. Despite Simon's arrogance, it was backed by real strength.
Simon was an apprentice of another mentor and was very powerful; even among last year's apprentices, he was quite well-known. Although he hadn't yet advanced to Second-Level Apprentice, it wouldn't be long before he did.
However, he couldn't even break through Daniel's defense, which was truly hard to believe.
Walking down the street, Daniel didn't know how to describe his feelings. He couldn't understand why the current situation had arisen when suddenly a voice from the badge called out to him.
"Daniel, come here for a moment."
Daniel felt a bit uneasy, not understanding why Maxwell wanted to see him. Over the past two years, due to his rapid improvement and quick learning, Maxwell had rarely disciplined him and allowed him to develop on his own.
Who would have thought that he would be summoned this time?
Upon arriving at Wizard Tower, he saw Maxwell looking at him with a smile.
"Not bad, not bad. I thought it would take you another two years to realize the current situation; I didn't expect you to know it already."
Daniel felt a bit confused and after thinking for a moment, he asked, "Master, is it about Simon and the others?"
"Yes. Do you think everyone can advance to Second-Level Apprentice in just over two years like you? Do you know why the academy allows apprentices to stay for thirty years?"
Daniel was startled. "Master, you already knew? I didn't tell anyone about my advancement to Second-Level Apprentice!"
"Did I need you to tell me? Do you really think I'm blind? I knew about your advancement from the very first day; it's just that you didn’t ask me."
"Let me tell you, the reason for allowing thirty years is because even with that much time, less than 10% can graduate as Third-Level Apprentices. Most graduate as Second-Level Apprentices, and about 0% of fools leave as First-Level Apprentices."
"Do you know what it means that you can now become a Second-Level Apprentice? It means that you have the potential to advance to Formal Wizard within thirty years."
Only then did Daniel realize how talented and extraordinary he truly was. In just a few more years, he could surpass the students from the previous cohort. At that moment, he deeply understood the meaning of being lonely at the top.
Initially, he had come to Wizard Academy with Furnal; they were in the same team and could be considered friends.
But what about now?
They couldn't even go on a mission together. It wasn't that Daniel didn't want to, or that Furnal was unwilling, but the gap between them was too great. When they were together, Furnal could only hold him back, and if any problems arose, Daniel had to split his focus to protect him. Yet Furnal couldn't provide him with any help at all.
As a result, now, while Furnal was helping him sell potions, their meetings felt more like a subordinate showing respect than that of friends.
Jim was the same. He became Maxwell's apprentice earlier and was much stronger than Daniel, initially taking care of him.
However, over the past two years, as Daniel's strength gradually increased, their relationship began to reverse, with Daniel increasingly taking the dominant role.
Especially this time, when Daniel was promoted to Second-Level Apprentice, he suddenly realized how vast the gap between him and Jim had become. He had already left Jim far behind.
Going on missions together was no longer possible unless he wanted to carry a burden or help Jim with his tasks. Regardless, their relationship could never be as harmonious as it once was.
Looking up, he found that he didn't even have a single friend; what a sorrowful state that was.
