Austen's face was as dark as the bottom of a pot. He should have had a place among the thousands of onlookers this time, but unfortunately, due to carelessness, he could only stand below the stage, silently blessing them while looking at them with red eyes filled with envy, feeling extremely frustrated inside.
At this moment, the true host of the competition, Ms. Samantha, a Third-Rank Wizard, stepped out for the first time. Previously, those apprentices had not caught her eye at all; she hadn't even appeared at the opening ceremony of the competition.
However, today, at the final moment of the competition, she personally came out to host, which undoubtedly showed that the top eight were indeed receiving attention from the entire alliance.
As Ms. Samantha appeared, many wizards stood up and paid their highest respects, indicating her status in everyone's hearts. A Third-Rank Wizard was rarely seen even within the Wizard Alliance.
Ms. Samantha waved to everyone and immediately got to the point without any small talk. Looking at Daniel and the others, she said, "Very well, reaching this stage already proves that you are the true elites among this year's Wizard Apprentices. I have high hopes for your future. As for the rules of the upcoming matches, I don't need to elaborate; you should be clear about them.
I am too lazy to group you; just fight according to your standing positions. From left to right, you will battle in pairs. The winners of adjacent Arenas will then compete against each other until we have the final two who will enter the showdown stage for the real finals."
Hearing this, no one objected. They glanced at the showdown stage in the center of the Arenas, which stood tall like a star surrounded by moons, feeling a burning desire to go up there and enjoy the envious gazes of others.
The eight participants spread out and took their places on four Arenas.
Looking at Elisa wrapped in a Wizard Robe, Daniel frowned. His luck was quite good; however, in the Quarterfinals, he encountered two of the few strong individuals whose Mental Power had reached a full hundred points, along with Franklin—he really had fought against them all.
"Hello, Claris. Please go easy on me in this battle; don’t let me lose too badly," Daniel greeted her with a smile.
"Don't worry; I will," she replied directly without hesitation to what was supposed to be a polite remark, leaving Daniel momentarily speechless.
With a judge's call of "Begin," Daniel first threw a Devil's Skull at Claris while simultaneously integrating a cute charm into his body.
After several battles, Daniel grew increasingly fond of Fate's Favoring Grand Spell and Fate's Abandonment Great Curse; they truly were his best means of fighting.
Just thinking about it, during battles, I often manage to turn misfortune into good fortune for various reasons. When the opponent's attacks hit me, their power is reduced by two or three tenths. Is there anything better than that?
After the opponent fell victim to the "Fate's Abandonment Great Curse," all sorts of bizarre misfortunes could befall them, forcing them to be cautious and restricted in battle.
Even in the heat of combat, one must maintain a bit of awareness and pay attention to the surrounding situation to prevent any further misfortunes from occurring.
That feeling is quite frustrating.
Elisa waved her hand, and a row of ten Puppets appeared on the field, each radiating the power of a Third-Level Wizard Apprentice, charging forward one by one.
Daniel dared not waste words; he raised his staff, and instantly countless fireballs flew out, striking the Puppets.
He had seen Elisa's matches before. Although these Puppets possessed the strength of Third-Level Apprentices, they were the weakest kind and not too difficult to deal with.
The challenge lay in the fact that Elisa had not just these ten Puppets but dozens more. If he couldn't destroy these ten Puppets in a short time, Elisa would quickly summon more.
At this rate, facing dozens of Third-Level Puppets, who could avoid defeat?
The problem was that Third-Level Puppets were not so easy to kill. The opponent lost precisely because they couldn't interrupt Elisa's Puppet summoning.
First, Daniel cast "Wind God's Guardian" on himself. Then he chanted a spell, and fireballs filled the air, bombarding the Puppets.
By the time Elisa summoned her Puppets, only one Puppet remained on the field.
Frustrated, she could only continue summoning more Puppets, hoping to overwhelm Daniel with sheer numbers.
Unfortunately for her, Daniel's fireballs far outnumbered the Puppets; there weren't enough Puppets for him to kill.
After several attempts, Elisa stopped and looked at Daniel, who remained motionless, leading one to believe that she only had this one trick. The speed of her summoning couldn't keep up with the speed of death, so she could only concede defeat.
The battle was going so smoothly that Daniel felt a bit puzzled. Who could raise their Mental Power limit by a hundred points in just a short period? Surely, they couldn't be weak. Yet, in his perception, although this battle was intense, it couldn't compare to his fights with others.
Elisa's combat ability was simply too weak. Was she just a technician like Albert? Even if Albert's Mental Power reached a hundred points, it would be impressive for him to have combat capabilities like hers. He relied entirely on Magical Items to boost his power.
Not wanting to dwell on it, Daniel conjured a fireball that emitted a blazing light and sent it flying toward Elisa. It struck the protective shield with a jolt, nearly shattering it.
Elisa sneered. "You're not bad; I didn't expect you to force out my true abilities."
With her fingers dancing in various incomprehensible gestures, Daniel sensed something was wrong. Just as he was about to unleash another fireball, he suddenly felt his arm twitch for some reason, causing him to lose control of the fireball, which exploded violently.
If he hadn't dodged quickly, he would have been hit by his own spell. Even so, he ended up looking quite disheveled.
Seeing that Elisa didn't take the opportunity to attack, Daniel, though confused as to why, attempted to cast another spell against her. However, just as he was about to succeed, his arm twitched again and the fireball exploded once more.
After two consecutive failures like this, Daniel realized that Elisa was behind it.
Since his Mental Power had increased to 90 points, he had never experienced a failed spell cast before. Now, however, he had failed twice in a row while under the effect of Fate's Favoring Grand Spell; this was simply impossible.
Glancing at Elisa, who stood still in her Black Wizard Robe, Daniel charged forward. Since magic wasn't working, he decided to try close combat. Although his melee skills weren't as powerful as his magic, he possessed the physical qualities of a Great Knight. If it came down to it, he could retreat and use magic again.
However, after taking just two steps, his foot suddenly seemed to be tripped by something and he fell to his knees. He quickly tried to get up but lost control of his body again; using too much force caused him to collapse onto the ground.
Daniel sensed that something was wrong. He knew Elisa was behind this but had no idea how she was doing it; he still couldn't figure it out. How could he continue fighting like this?
Looking at Elisa wrapped in her Black Wizard Robe and observing her gestures, Daniel's heart raced—could she be a Puppet Master?
The so-called Puppet Master belongs to the realm of mysticism, controlling others' bodies through methods that ordinary people cannot comprehend, immune to resistance, and impossible to decipher.
"This is the Puppet Master."
"That's right. I didn't expect you to recognize it, but so what? I want to see how you will respond."
Daniel's face was filled with bitterness; it was precisely because he could not understand that he could not decipher or respond.
Just as he was thinking this, he suddenly got up and strode toward the Arena. In Daniel's fearful gaze, he watched his own body walk to the very edge of the Arena, about to jump down.
As long as he jumped, this match would be won by Elisa.
He managed to project a protective shield outside his body and, with great willpower, took two steps back. Just as he was about to breathe a sigh of relief, his right foot betrayed him, and with a loud thud, he fell to the ground. Just as he tried to get up, his entire head pitched forward, and he collapsed there.
His nose stung as fresh blood flowed out; he was in a pitiful state, unable to maintain the protective shield which vanished uncontrollably.
Elisa walked over, looking down at Daniel. "Weren't you quite impressive just now when you killed my Puppet? Where's that bravado now?"
