The sky was overcast, and a light rain fell as a young couple strolled hand in hand along the banks of the Huangpu River in Shanghai. Ships sounded their horns, slowly gliding across the river's surface, while the yellow waters surged relentlessly toward the distance.
"Have you really decided to go back to Poland?" the White-Clad Woman asked softly.
"Yes," the Young Man in Black replied.
"Even though they say the war is over now, I still think it’s not safe for you to go back. Is there something particularly important?" The White-Clad Woman showed a hint of concern.
"Yes, I must return to Poland to retrieve something that is crucial for me," the Young Man in Black answered firmly.
"Is it about the Demonic Music?" the White-Clad Woman asked.
"Yes, when I left Poland, I secretly hid part of the Demonic Music Sheet somewhere in Poland. Now that the war is over, I need to go back immediately to get the Demonic Music Sheet. This is very important," the Young Man in Black replied.
The White-Clad Woman lowered her head and said nothing, instinctively tightening her grip on the Young Man in Black's hand. She understood that saying more would be futile; his decision was unchangeable. She knew very well that the Demonic Music meant far more to him than his own life.
In the distance on the river's surface, flocks of water birds occasionally darted across like lightning, and at times they would stop to flap their wings vigorously, drenched in droplets. They seemed carefree, completely unaware of the young lovers' sorrow of parting.
"I'm curious, what is so special about the Demonic Music? How is it different from the music I usually hear? Can it really drive people insane?" The White-Clad Woman stopped and looked up at the Young Man in Black.
The Young Man in Black furrowed his brow, struggling to find the right words to explain the Demonic Music to her.
"But I feel that people in this era have gone mad, as if they’ve listened to the Demonic Music. In this brutal war, once kind people have turned cold-blooded and are slaughtering cities like demons. What could possibly cause this?" The White-Clad Woman turned her head and gazed at the water birds on the river, murmuring to herself.
"I don't know either, but everything is in the past. Don't think too much about it. Besides, you are still carrying our child. Overthinking can harm your health," the Young Man in Black gently comforted her.
The two found a place to sit on the riverbank. The delicate mist slowly rose over the river, creating a uniquely beautiful scene.
The White-Clad Girl leaned her head against the Young Man in Black's shoulder and said softly, "Only your love warms my heart. I love you."
"I love you and our child too," the Young Man in Black affectionately patted her head and held her tightly.
"I never expected to fall in love with you, a foreigner. Even my parents were surprised," the White-Clad Woman said.
"By the way, have you heard from your parents?" the Young Man in Black asked.
The White-Clad Woman shook her head.
"They have been missing for three months with no news at all. They haven't written to me or sent a telegram, nor have they sent anyone to deliver a message. I don't know where they are. I asked another uncle from the Republic of Korea government, who is a colleague of my parents, and he said he also doesn't know where my parents have gone. I don't know if they were killed by the Japanese or if they went back to Korea on a special mission. I really want to go back to Korea and see, but he said that Korea is very unsafe right now and advised me not to rush back. But I'm very worried about them. Where could they be?"
"You don't need to worry; maybe they are on a special secret mission. The war is over, and their mission may be complete. They will come looking for you soon," he reassured her.
"I really hope you're right, that they are all well and will come find me," a hint of a smile appeared on the White-Clad Woman's sorrowful face.
"Actually, it's not just because I'm carrying a child; I really want to go back to Poland with you. During the war, Warsaw Palace was bombed to ruins by Hitler's army. I've heard that the Polish people are rebuilding it, and I want to see the historical paintings of Poland inside the palace," the White-Clad Woman said.
"The journey to Poland is long and arduous; it's not suitable for you to travel right now. I promise you that once you give birth to our child, I will take you and the baby back to Poland. At that time, I'll accompany you to Warsaw Palace to see the exquisite masterpieces and splendid royal collections."
The White-Clad Woman smiled and nodded.
"When will you come back? Ever since you left me, I've felt empty inside, without a shred of security. My world only has you; my parents are missing, and I have almost no friends. I'm afraid of loneliness; I'm used to having you by my side," the White-Clad Woman said.
"I won't be gone for long. As soon as I return to Poland and retrieve the Demonic Music Sheet, I'll come back to Shanghai immediately," the Young Man in Black said.
"What if you don't come back? I'm afraid that once you leave, you won't return, leaving me and the child all alone here. Deep down, I wish so much that you wouldn't leave me, that you'd never leave me," the White-Clad Woman said.
"How could that be possible? I promise you, I will come back. And it will be very soon."
"Really?"
"Of course. As long as I promise you something, I will make it happen. Don't worry; I will definitely return to Shanghai as soon as possible."
"Actually, it's not that I don't believe you. It's just that I have a bad feeling, so I'm afraid of your departure, afraid that you won't come back, and even more afraid that after you leave me, I will die."
"Die? How could you die? Don't think like that."
"I don't know; I've been dreaming a lot lately, especially nightmares. I vaguely sense something bad is coming."
"It won't happen. You're such a beautiful and kind person; how could you die? Nothing like that will happen. Don't think too much about it. I love you and the child; I will use my life to protect both of you. No one will harm you. You must wait for me to return."
