Bai Yujing originally planned to go to Carlton Hill early in the morning, but Emma told Bai Yujing that the view at Carlton Hill is best in the evening. Following Emma's advice, Bai Yujing decided to make St. Giles' Cathedral the first stop of the day.
When they arrived outside St. Giles' Cathedral, Bai Yujing felt a sense of familiarity, as if they had passed by this place yesterday. The exterior of the cathedral was bustling with activity, with people coming and going and numerous stalls set up under small canopies. At the entrance of the church stood a tall statue on a high pedestal, requiring Bai Yujing to look up to see its features.
Upon entering, they discovered a different scene, especially the stained glass windows. The ancient sacred images were painted on the glass, and sunlight streamed through, filling the space with a sense of holiness.
"It seems like there’s a performance," Emma said as she walked ahead. Bai Yujing immediately noticed a group of children practicing choral singing, with a teacher guiding them.
Like other tourists, Bai Yujing became an audience member. The children's voices sounded heavenly, captivating everyone present.
Emma reminisced, "It's the school teacher leading students in rehearsal here. When I was young, my teacher took us to practice at the local church too."
Next, Bai Yujing and Emma visited the National Museum of Scotland. The museum was impressive and spacious; standing in the middle of the hall allowed them to see all the way to the top floor. Bai Yujing noticed that in Edinburgh, museums and art galleries are generally free to enter.
Inside, they saw various antiques and treasures from around the world. Reflecting on it, Bai Yujing thought that Great Britain had certainly taken many items from around the globe. Among them, Chinese artifacts were relatively few, while Egyptian treasures were abundant, including even a Pharaoh's coffin.
In the afternoon, they continued to Holyrood Palace, which serves as the Queen's official residence in Scotland. It is open to the public for visits, but photography is not allowed inside. Since they had already toured Edinburgh Castle yesterday, Bai Yujing felt less awe towards Holyrood Palace.
What intrigued Bai Yujing more was the ruins of Holyrood Abbey in the back garden. Although mostly destroyed, it possessed a different kind of beauty and historical depth.
"Let's take a break here," Emma suggested to Bai Yujing.
They sat down together after walking around for quite some time; it was time to catch their breath.
"Can you show me that diary?" After sitting down, Emma suddenly remembered something and asked Bai Yujing.
Bai Yujing, who had planned to let her examine it later, quickly took it out from their backpack: "You can hold onto it and take it back to look over. If you find any information or important clues, just let me know."
"Alright!" Emma nodded but did not put away the diary; instead, she began flipping through it in her hands.
Bai Yujing didn’t interrupt her and watched intently as Emma browsed through the diary. When she focused seriously on something, there was an alluring quality about her. Her face did not have the distinctly angular features typical of Westerners; instead, there was a delicate mixed-race charm about her. With golden curly hair—whether natural or dyed—it was impeccably styled and smooth.
"Do you have a pen? Hand it to me; I need to jot something down!" Emma suddenly spoke without looking up.
Bai Yujing hurriedly rummaged through his backpack and handed a ballpoint pen to Emma, saying, "Here!"
Emma circled and noted on her notebook. The notebook wasn't thick, and since the entries were written one page at a time, each diary entry wasn't long, so it looked like she was making quick progress. Emma soon circled all the clues she wanted to find and turned to look at Bai Yujing, only to find him staring at her intently, his eyes fixed on her without moving.
Emma immediately tossed her hair and said, "Hey! Daydreaming boy, wake up!"
Bai Yujing felt embarrassed after being teased. He had indeed been staring at Emma while she was distracted, and now he was caught: "I'm sorry, I really apologize. You know, you are very, very beautiful!"
"Really?" Being complimented by a man like this would make any girl happy. Besides, Bai Yujing was not bad-looking; he had a slightly scholarly appearance with thick eyebrows and big eyes. He wasn't delicate but had a certain charm. Just look at his ex-girlfriend Li Xinyan; if he were too unattractive, Li Xinyan wouldn't have been interested in him. After all, love always needs a reason to begin.
If we delve into other aspects, Bai Yujing could only flatter himself and say that he was quite capable.
Seeing Emma looking at him happily, Bai Yujing immediately said, "Of course it's true."
"Okay, I forgive you. I'll give you a chance to take me out for dinner!" During lunch, Emma had treated Bai Yujing because he had been paying before. This time, she insisted on treating him. Bai Yujing didn't refuse; after all, it was just a small matter. He often didn't want to fuss over such things.
For lunch, they had salmon. Seafood from Scotland is also a major highlight, though the prices are quite appealing as well. It was evident that Emma's family background was quite good; at least they weren't struggling financially. Her personality was also very cheerful and generous, making it easy to be around her without any pressure.
"Then let's go have steak together tonight!" Bai Yujing thought for a moment. Since Emma had always been the one recommending places, he decided to take the lead this time and suggested what to eat. "I just saw a place that looked pretty good."
Emma nodded in agreement: "Alright then, I’ll follow your lead!"
Bai Yujing quickly took Emma to that restaurant. It was decorated primarily in white, giving it a fairy-tale-like atmosphere. The interior was filled with fresh flowers, and the windows and tables were spotless.
At that moment, the restaurant was very busy. After some effort, they found a seat. Bai Yujing picked up the menu, and a waitress immediately approached them.
"I'll have two steaks; mine should be medium-well. What about yours?" Bai Yujing asked Emma.
"How about trying medium? It tastes much better! Mine should be..." Emma started to say but then quickly changed her mind and ordered something that made Bai Yujing feel quite strange.
"No need for that; I'll just have one haggis!"
Bai Yujing didn't know what that was exactly, but Emma looked mysterious about it. After consulting with Emma again, he ordered two Bloody Marys.
When the dish was served, Bai Yujing finally understood what haggis really was. This dish could be described as a sheep's offal pudding, a traditional food from Scotland, usually made by stuffing sheep's meat into a sheep's stomach. However, its appearance was not very appealing; it looked like a dark culinary disaster.
Despite this, Emma seemed to really enjoy it. "This haggis is quite good! It's prepared very well, with no unpleasant smell at all. Would you like to try some?"
Although Emma recommended it, Bai Yujing looked at it and still felt a bit scared. "Never mind, I'll just stick with the steak. This portion is enough for me to be full."
The steak was cooked just right, not too rare to be unappetizing for Bai Yujing. It was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. More importantly, all the flavors were infused into the steak. Taking a bite left a lingering taste in his mouth. For Bai Yujing, who had been busy all afternoon and was feeling empty inside, having such a large piece of beef was truly a supreme enjoyment.
Looking at Emma, she was currently tasting the dark dish in Bai Yujing's eyes. She had cut it into small pieces and was eating it with great enjoyment, her expression suggesting that it was indeed a rare delicacy from Scotland.
"Cheers!" Emma raised her glass and clinked it with Bai Yujing's. The ice cubes in their glasses swirled around, producing a crisp sound.
The two ate slowly, savoring their meal. After finishing, they realized it was getting late. However, in Scotland, night falls relatively late; it wouldn't get dark until after nine o'clock, so the sky was still bright.
"I had a great time today. Should I walk you home?" Bai Yujing wanted to see Emma's house but felt that this suggestion might be too forward.
Emma shook her head. "We agreed this morning that we would watch the sunset together tonight."
Bai Yujing suddenly remembered that they had planned to visit Carlton Hill in the evening. He slapped his forehead and said, "I'm sorry! I completely forgot! This morning I was thinking about taking some good photos from Carlton Hill!"
"It's not too late now!" Emma made a gesture to set off, and Bai Yujing immediately joined her as they headed towards their next destination: climbing Carlton Hill to watch the sunset over Edinburgh.
