Carlton Hill is a must-visit place in Edinburgh, as it offers the best vantage point to observe the entire city and is one of the most beautiful spots. Generally, it's better to visit in the evening, and most couples come here to watch the sunset.
Bai Yujing lives on Prince Street. Walking east from Prince Street leads directly to Carlton Hill. Therefore, Bai Yujing made a special trip back to prepare and brought along a tripod. As the best location for photography in Edinburgh, it would be a real shame if they couldn't take a couple of good photos after climbing up.
At this moment, it was still bright outside. Bai Yujing and Emma were walking along a quiet path up the hill. The old stone steps had been worn down over time, and stepping on them gave a sense of adventure, reminiscent of exploring small woods as a child, filled with childlike wonder.
On the hillside, there were some unknown trees bearing red fruits. From here, they could already see the panoramic view of Edinburgh. The wind blew across the grassy slope, causing the wild grass to sway. Bai Yujing felt inspired and immediately took a photo with his camera.
Carlton Hill isn't very high, so it didn't take long for them to reach the top. At this point, the sky had dimmed; the sun was nearing the end of the day, about to sink below the horizon. The scene was breathtakingly beautiful.
Standing on Carlton Hill, they could see the path beneath their feet leading into the sprawling cityscape of Edinburgh. In the distance lay an endless sea. At that moment, the sun appeared larger than usual, like a giant fireball slowly sinking into the ocean, casting an orange-red glow over the entire world.
Bai Yujing adjusted his camera and immediately looked at Emma: "Emma, do you want to take a photo together here?"
"Sure!"
As they stood facing the sun and considered what pose to strike, Emma said, "You should wrap your arms around my waist."
Bai Yujing paused for a moment but complied with Emma's request and held her waist. Emma then spread her arms wide in a flying pose. Bai Yujing suddenly realized: "Oh my god, you're Rose! Are we reenacting Titanic?"
Emma smiled and went along with the sunset breeze. Bai Yujing felt incredibly romantic; Emma seemed slightly embarrassed by the pose but was eager to try it out. She pulled her hands back, covered her mouth with a laugh, and said, "Too bad you're not as handsome as Jack!"
"Well then, I'm truly sorry, beautiful Rose. Let me be your stand-in Jack for now!"
Bai Yujing held Emma's waist; her toned body felt firm against his hands. They positioned themselves in front of the camera as the sunset cast its last rays of light before them. The camera they had set up captured this moment.
As they posed for the photo and waited for it to finish shooting, they noticed several tourists nearby watching them. Emma suddenly became a bit shy.
"Excuse me, could you take a picture of us too?" A couple in their thirties approached them after being inspired by Bai Yujing and Emma's scene.
Bai Yujing immediately nodded: "Of course! I'd be happy to."
Since it was already dark and he was with Emma, Bai Yujing decided not to explore more attractions on Carlton Hill for safety reasons. Although the sun had just set, it was already ten o'clock at night.
"Hi, beautiful, can I get to know you?"
Emma was walking ahead at a brisk pace, while Bai Yujing was carrying a stand and following behind. When he caught up, he noticed Emma was being blocked by two men, one fat and one thin. Realizing the situation was not good, Bai Yujing quickly ran to Emma's side.
"Emma, are these two your friends?" Bai Yujing asked, looking at the two men—one with messy black hair and the other thin with dyed white hair. They both appeared to have had quite a bit to drink, their faces flushed and reeking of alcohol, looking far from trustworthy.
Emma shook her head. "No, I don't know them."
"Yes, this beautiful lady and I are friends—very good friends!" The two men laughed loudly at this.
The fat one turned to Bai Yujing and said, "You yellow-skinned monkey, I advise you to mind your own business!"
Bai Yujing grinned. "Sorry, but I can't stand people like you, you white-skinned pig!"
"You're asking for it!" The fat man shouted angrily and swung a fist at Bai Yujing's head. Anticipating the attack after provoking him, Bai Yujing crouched down to evade the blow and kicked the fat man hard in the groin.
"Ah!" The fat man let out a cry of pain and immediately crouched down. Without hesitation, Bai Yujing swung the camera stand he was holding down onto the fat man's head. Bai Yujing was no stranger to trouble; during his school days, he had been known for his toughness. As a child, he had acted recklessly and ended up seriously injuring someone in a fight that led to hospitalization. After being expelled from school, he learned his lesson.
Coming from a not-so-wealthy family, they had to pay a hefty compensation. His parents scrambled for connections everywhere until they finally found a private high school that would accept him. This experience made Bai Yujing feel like he had grown up overnight; however, it did not mean he was weak or easily bullied.
After landing several heavy blows on the fat man's head and confirming he couldn't get up while groaning in pain on the ground, Bai Yujing remembered there was still the white-haired Slim Guy nearby. He looked up just in time to see Emma delivering a flurry of punches and kicks that took down Slim Guy with much more flair than Bai Yujing's sneak attack.
"Chinese Kung Fu?" Bai Yujing exclaimed in surprise, raising his voice.
Emma proudly replied, "No, no, no! It's mixed martial arts!"
Bai Yujing immediately rested the now bent stand on his shoulder and grabbed Emma's hand. "We need to get out of here quickly; it won't be good if we get caught."
"Should we call an ambulance?" Emma glanced back at the fat man, who seemed genuinely hurt.
Bai Yujing pulled Emma along as they ran. "It's fine; he won't die. Someone coming down the mountain will find him."
The two of them vanished into thin air and ran far away. Once they reached the street, they deliberately took a few detours before stopping to catch their breath.
"That was really exciting!" Emma looked very excited, leaning on Bai Yujing, who was resting against a bright red-painted phone booth, holding Emma close as they both caught their breath after running quite a distance.
Once they stopped, Bai Yujing and Emma realized their position was rather intimate. Bai Yujing gazed into Emma's beautiful sapphire-like eyes, and an unusual emotion suddenly surged in his chest.
Emma didn't say anything and stared blankly at Bai Yujing. Suddenly, she lifted her head as if seeking something. Bai Yujing instantly understood her meaning and immediately wrapped his arms around Emma's head and kissed her.
Emma seemed a bit inexperienced, which was different from what Bai Yujing had imagined. Logically, he should be the one feeling inexperienced since he had only had one girlfriend before; wasn't it supposed to be more open-minded abroad?
The kiss with Emma didn't last long; they both just tasted it lightly. However, their feelings had changed. The streets at night were brightly lit, with various neon lights illuminating the road, and rows of billboards stood beside them as they walked in silence, unsure of what to say.
Emma was the first to break the silence: "I read the notes you gave me today. They aren't nearby, but they shouldn't be too far either. I need to go back and check some information. I'll contact you tomorrow."
"Okay, I'll wait for you to contact me tomorrow!" Bai Yujing nodded. The other implication of Emma's words was that they would meet again tomorrow, which made Bai Yujing feel both happy and complicated inside.
Watching Emma gradually disappear into the crowd, Bai Yujing felt a sense of loss. The warmth of her lips lingered; although he had fantasized about something happening between them, men often think about all sorts of things. Pursuing beautiful women is in a man's nature, but he never expected that sparks would actually fly. This wasn't a movie, and Bai Yujing wouldn't stay here forever.
After a long day, Bai Yujing should have taken a shower and fallen asleep in bed. However, he felt his thoughts were extremely chaotic; one moment he saw Emma's figure, and the next moment it was Li Xinyan's. Although it had been some time since he broke up with Li Xinyan, after so many years together, it was impossible for him to let go all at once.
Unable to sleep at all, Bai Yujing could only turn on the television to watch some British shows. Thanks to the English proficiency skill granted by the Exotic Creature Hunter System, he could understand everything without needing subtitles for the dramas that used to require Chinese translations.
The television was playing Sherlock Holmes, which was very engaging with strong performances from the actors. Bai Yujing watched the show until he gradually dozed off.
