"Hello, I am Bai Yujing."
"What? I passed the assessment? Alright, I will go over this afternoon to handle the procedures."
After hanging up the phone, Bai Yujing felt a bit complicated. She didn't expect her application to join the World Wildlife Conservation Association to be approved; it was quite different from what she had imagined. However, since it was approved, Bai Yujing decided to go after all, as this identity was something she had prepared for a long time.
Bai Yujing drove her newly acquired Range Rover directly to the location mentioned in the call. The China Office of the World Wildlife Conservation Association was located in Guang City, not far from where Bai Yujing was. It took less than two hours to get there by car.
Contrary to Bai Yujing's expectations, she thought such an internationally renowned organization would be housed in a tall building. Instead, it was in a four-story small building on a relatively quiet street. The ground floor housed a pet medical rescue center, and their office was on the top floor, with a bank across the street.
When Bai Yujing entered, there were people coming and going inside. She could hear the sounds of pets and the lively atmosphere. The rescue center was very professional, with a huge lobby decorated in a modern style, and the chandelier above resembled a dog's paw, giving it a warm feeling.
Bai Yujing took the elevator to the fourth floor and explained her purpose to the receptionist at the office. The receptionist immediately led her to a middle-aged woman. "Hello, I am Xiong Kaihui, responsible for handling your membership procedures. Please follow me."
In the meeting room, Xiong Kaihui explained the following important points regarding membership: the principles that needed to be observed and obligations that should be undertaken, as well as some benefits provided by the association.
"Members of the association not only have obligations but can also enjoy discounts when using the association's facilities and human resources. Wherever you go, you can apply for assistance from local stations. For each mission, you will receive subsidies provided by the association," Xiong Kaihui explained one by one. Bai Yujing suddenly understood why the membership process for the World Wildlife Conservation Association was so complex and formal.
"Okay, I understand!" Bai Yujing confirmed and signed her name on her documents. After undergoing facial recognition and fingerprint registration, Xiong Kaihui presented her with a palm-sized identification card that served as Bai Yujing's proof of identity.
Afterward, Xiong Kaihui guided Bai Yujing to download an internal software application for their organization for communication and contact purposes and handed her a manual from the Endangered Species Conservation Organization.
"That's about it. Oh, by the way, it seems your mission for this year has already been assigned. Please check it on the software and remember to complete it on time; otherwise, you will be expelled from the association," Xiong Kaihui was a strict middle-aged woman who conducted her work meticulously and seriously. Sitting together with her made Bai Yujing feel somewhat oppressed.
Bai Yujing nodded and left with her shoulder bag and identification card. As she walked out of the elevator slowly carrying her bag, her phone notifications finally refreshed, and she saw her mission.
Bai Yujing's hand slipped, causing her shoulder bag to fall to the ground with a thud. She saw a mission reminder on her phone: "Assist Dr. Li Xinyan in completing experiments by collecting necessary experimental materials and mission data."
"Don't block the exit; people need to come in and out!" Bai Yujing's stunned expression immediately drew complaints from those behind her.
Bai Yujing picked up her bag and apologized to those behind her: "Sorry, sorry! I'll move out of the way right away."
Now Bai Yujing understood why she suddenly became a member; she hadn't even gone through the rigorous assessment that Emma mentioned. It seemed all of this was orchestrated by Li Xinyan. What did she intend to do? Toy with her?
Bai Yujing stepped out of the building when the phone rang. "Are you in Guang City? Have you received the mission? Come to my lab right now."
Bai Yujing felt a bit helpless. "Xinyan, stop messing around, okay? I really have things to do later."
Li Xinyan immediately replied, "Whatever it is, come here first."
"Alright, alright, just wait a moment."
Bai Yujing stopped at Renren Hospital, located on the outskirts of Guang City in the TH District. This hospital is well-known nationwide for treating difficult diseases like diabetes and tuberculosis, and it covers a large area. Bai Yujing had been here many times before while picking up Li Xinyan; her studio was in a building behind Yuan.
After waiting for a short while, Bai Yujing saw Li Xinyan come out wearing a white lab coat, looking like she hadn't changed clothes. Bai Yujing rolled down the car window to get her attention. Upon seeing the car Bai Yujing was driving, Li Xinyan's expression soured.
Her previously calm face suddenly turned frosty as she pulled open the car door and sat inside. Bai Yujing asked, "What’s wrong this time, Miss? I was wondering how I suddenly got through; turns out it was your doing."
"That's right, it was me. Any objections? You can ditch me, but I can't mess with you?" Li Xinyan glared at Bai Yujing.
Bai Yujing shook his head. "Fine, fine, but I really have something to do today. I'll drop you off at home."
"No need for that. Wherever you're going, just take me along. I happen to have some questions for you."
Bai Yujing started the vehicle, and Li Xinyan spoke up: "Was that dinosaur you encountered abroad real?"
Bai Yujing didn't expect Li Xinyan, who usually buried herself in her studies, to be curious about this too. He nodded. "It was real; I saw it with my own eyes. This trip abroad was quite an adventure—like something out of a movie. I've posted videos and pictures online; you should have seen them by now."
Li Xinyan then asked, "Did you manage to get any of its blood or body parts?"
Bai Yujing was taken aback. "You really dare to think that! I wouldn't even dream of harming it; it let me go—consider that my good fortune."
"What a pity! This would have been a huge discovery. Many experts have gone to Loch Ness and Inverness already but haven't found anything. It seems either it's submerged in the sea or hiding somewhere else. Loch Ness is so vast and connects to the ocean; it's hard to spot it," Li Xinyan said with some regret.
However, Bai Yujing couldn't do anything about it and decided to change the subject. "I'm going to meet a history professor from Sun Yat-sen University—a Paleography Expert. I've arranged an appointment through someone. Do you really want to tag along? There's not much to see."
Li Xinyan looked at Bai Yujing and asked, "Is it something else you discovered abroad?"
Bai Yujing didn't know how to explain, so he just nodded: "A travel friend I met abroad has a very mysterious mark on him, which might be very important to me. I need to figure him out."
Li Xinyan looked at Bai Yujing and suddenly felt that Bai Yujing seemed a bit unfamiliar. It felt like something was beyond her control, which made Li Xinyan uncomfortable. "Can I take a look?"
Bai Yujing handed the photo he had developed to Li Xinyan. After looking at it, Li Xinyan shook her head: "It doesn't seem to be text; it looks like some kind of mysterious symbol."
Bai Yujing nodded. He had also seen it and confirmed it was not text. It was different from the Golden Disc he had brought back before. The strange characters on the Golden Disc represented youth, which seemed to belong to a kind of Lilliputian Language, but it was not a commonly used term.
Bai Yujing felt that there should be more than one Golden Disc. He couldn't understand its specific function or origin for now.
However, these details were not immediately useful; he needed to clarify the meaning of the peculiar mark on Li Hao's ankle first, as this was a main quest that had to be completed.
The Paleography Expert that Bai Yujing was going to visit was named Qiu Shanqin, a university history professor. Bai Yujing had even paid for connections to contact this professor and ask for his help.
Driving into the university campus, he parked next to a small building. In front of a door on the third floor, Bai Yujing checked the address and confirmed it was correct before knocking on the door.
The door opened, revealing a middle-aged man with glasses and slightly gray hair, around fifty years old. "Hello, who are you looking for?"
"Hello, are you Professor Qiu? I'm Bai Yujing, Xiao Bai, the one I mentioned to you before."
Qiu Shanqin immediately remembered. "Oh, it's you! Come in! Did you bring the items?"
