At this moment, the summer in the south truly has a bit of the "Autumn Tiger" flavor, hot enough to feel somewhat unbearable. The scorching sun is baking the earth, and even the air has a hint of haziness. The car's air conditioning is set to maximum, yet it still feels stuffy.
They have now entered gx and are about to cross into WZ City. The music in the car is playing softly. They are at the border between two provinces, so the road is somewhat desolate, a long stretch leading into the distance without an end in sight.
"Let's find a place to buy some water!" Li Hao said to Bai Yujing as he looked out the car window.
Bai Yujing pointed to a few packs of drinks on the back seat. "Isn't there water here?"
"None of it is cold; it doesn't quench my thirst at all." Li Hao complained as he glanced at the bottled water behind him, which tasted dry and bland.
Bai Yujing looked ahead. "It seems we will have to drive for a while before we can find a place to buy something. Let's stop when we see one."
"Isn't that it?" At a corner, they spotted a lonely motel and convenience store, likely set up for passing travelers.
"Alright, let's check it out." Bai Yujing turned off the car and parked by the side of the road. The two prepared to get out together. As Bai Yujing walked into the convenience store, a girl who looked about fifteen or sixteen came out. She was wearing a white tank top and denim shorts, her long legs paired with sneakers radiating enthusiasm and vitality, immediately catching Li Hao's attention.
Li Hao instantly stared at her as she walked out. Feeling his gaze, the girl turned her head and shot him a cold glance before giving him a dismissive gesture with her middle fingers.
Just as Li Hao was about to say something, the girl had already turned away and left. Bai Yujing patted Li Hao on the shoulder. "Hey, she's underage; she might not even be sixteen yet. This is predatory behavior!"
Li Hao quickly replied, "A graceful lady deserves a gentleman's affection. Nowadays, too many people like you use age as an excuse; how much true love gets drowned in your kind's spittle?"
Bai Yujing was left speechless for a moment before extending her middle finger in response. After buying a large bottle of ice water from the convenience store, they also picked up two boxes of cream ice cream and a bag of peanuts and sunflower seeds before heading out.
Bai Yujing walked slowly with her bags toward the highway to put them in the car but suddenly stopped when she reached the highway. Li Hao was behind her enjoying his ice cream when he didn’t react in time and bumped into Bai Yujing.
"What happened? Why did you stop suddenly?" Li Hao asked as he nearly dropped his ice cream but managed to steady it before turning to Bai Yujing.
Bai Yujing paid no attention to Li Hao, only hearing a scream: "What the hell, where's my car?"
Li Hao followed Bai Yujing's dazed gaze and saw that the Blue Land Rover, which had been parked by the roadside, had disappeared. In the distance on the highway, a black car shadow, accompanied by dust, gradually shrank as it moved further away.
The two reacted quickly and immediately chased after it, shouting loudly: "Hey, stop right there!"
"Pull over!"
Watching the vehicle drive away, the people inside must have heard Bai Yujing and Li Hao's shouts. However, there was no way they would stop. The louder they shouted, it was as if to tease them; the car slowed down for a moment to wait for Bai Yujing and Li Hao, maintaining a speed that neither allowed them to catch up nor increased the distance, like herding sheep.
The two chased after it until they reached an uphill stretch, only able to watch through a cloud of dust as the driver sped away nonchalantly, leaving them nearly exhausted on the roadside, inhaling exhaust fumes and dust, standing still for a long time.
Li Hao weakly asked, "Are we being robbed?"
Bai Yujing was furious: "It's not 'we,' it's 'I' who was robbed! My car! It was a brand new car I just bought! And my camera, phone, laptop—all of it was in the car!"
"I had stuff in the car too!" Li Hao declared from behind.
Bai Yujing shot him a fierce glare. "I just saw it! It was that girl you were flirting with earlier who did this. It's definitely because you flirted with her that she decided to get back at us."
Li Hao immediately protested: "That wasn't flirting! I just thought it was strange how such a small girl could develop so well. I was just judging her authenticity critically—who knew she would steal our car in an instant?"
Bai Yujing let out a long sigh, somewhat doubting whether their recent good luck had turned into bad luck now. They had barely stepped out when trouble struck. "There's no other way; let's go back to the convenience store and ask the owner if we can borrow a phone to report this to the police. Then we'll see where the nearest city is."
The convenience store owner was a middle-aged man wearing a red tank top that rode up to his chest, exposing a large belly. The fan inside the store whirred loudly as if about to fall apart, making Bai Yujing feel increasingly restless.
"Call the police! You can use the phone over there, but it probably won't help much. Even if the police come, it will take them several hours, and this is a border area between two provinces. The person has already run off to who knows where; we can't catch up."
"Cameras? In a small shop like mine, where would I get cameras? No, no!"
"The nearest city is quite far away. There aren't many people along this road, just some remote villages. The closest is WZ City, and driving there would take about one or two hours. However, most people usually take the highway, and during this season, there are fewer travelers. You two on the road will probably find it hard to catch a ride with someone willing to take you."
Bai Yujing asked the shopkeeper a series of questions but received no good news. Goodness, they were stuck here in the middle of nowhere. With no other options, Bai Yujing and Li Hao went outside to sit down and clear their heads to think of a solution.
"What should we do now? Neither of us has our phones," Li Hao said, feeling somewhat helpless. This young master was used to having everything delivered to him at a moment's notice; even when he was out, money could solve most problems. But now that they were in this desolate place, they were in trouble.
Li Hao thought for a moment and suggested, "How about we walk there slowly?"
Bai Yujing's face darkened immediately: "Did you not hear the shopkeeper say it takes cars one or two hours? If we walk, we might not even make it before dark."
"What should we do then?"
Under the scorching afternoon sun, both Bai Yujing and Li Hao were sweating profusely, their clothes soaked through. After taking a sip of Ice Water, Bai Yujing suddenly noticed an electric scooter parked against the wall of the shop. He quickly walked over to take a look; it was an electric scooter that looked about 80% new, painted green.
Bai Yujing's eyes lit up instantly as he asked Li Hao, "Li Hao, do you have any money on you?"
Li Hao patted his pockets and pulled out a crumpled handful of small bills and a few bank cards. "This is all I've got. I'm wearing slim-fit pants, so my wallet was too tight to carry."
Bai Yujing took out his wallet and pulled out all the cash inside: "I don't know if this will be enough; I hope the shopkeeper isn't too greedy."
After leaving the convenience store, Bai Yujing got the keys along with two white helmets—one white and one black. The shopkeeper was quite nice and gave him all the accessories that came with buying the electric scooter. As for the price... well, it was reasonable enough.
Driving the electric car, the two set off. Inside the cramped vehicle were two men, both around six feet tall. Li Hao curled up in the back, leaning against Bai Yujing. They traveled across the vast continent, with small rivers and fields lining the roads, occasionally spotting a few houses, unsure if anyone lived there.
Li Hao felt something was off. "We went from an RV to an SUV, and now we're in this electric car. The vehicle keeps getting smaller and the quality lower."
"Keep talking nonsense and I'll kick you out. I paid for this car, and then you'll get to experience luxury in this vast wilderness," Bai Yujing's words immediately silenced Li Hao, who settled down quietly in the back. The summer breeze, mixed with heat, brushed past them, providing a unique experience.
As night approached, they still hadn't reached their destination, and the electric car's battery was nearly depleted. They had also run out of water, and their lips were chapped from thirst.
"Old Bai, let's find a place to get some water. I feel like I'm about to dehydrate," Li Hao weakly leaned against Bai Yujing's back. Although Bai Yujing still had energy, his body was signaling that it needed hydration.
Looking around, he said, "It seems like there are people on that ridge ahead. Let's ask them for some water and maybe have dinner while we charge up."
Upon hearing about food, Li Hao perked up immediately. "Great! Let's hurry over."
Bai Yujing and Li Hao had dinner at a farmhouse. As soon as they entered, Li Hao, desperate from thirst, grabbed a ladle and started pouring water from the tank into his mouth, making the elderly owner of the farmhouse laugh heartily.
The old man spoke in a dialect mixed with Mandarin that Bai Yujing and Li Hao could only barely understand. However, he was very friendly, and they could feel his kindness. Sometimes when the old man laughed for no apparent reason, they found themselves laughing along.
The meal was simple but incredibly satisfying for both Bai Yujing and Li Hao after enduring the scorching sun and hot winds on their journey.
"I asked the old man; just ahead is WZ City. We’ve arrived. We'll set off soon and stay in WZ City tonight," Bai Yujing informed Li Hao, who was busy swallowing his food and nodded in acknowledgment.
Bai Yujing held his forehead, wondering if bringing this troublesome companion along was his biggest mistake.
