Bai Yujing held an oilcloth bag in his hand. After opening it, he discovered a pack of white granules inside that he couldn't identify. Both Bai Yujing and Li Hao had question marks on their foreheads: "What is this?"
Bai Yujing took a look but still couldn't recognize it. In the end, he could only put it away, planning to wrap it back up in the oilcloth bag and take it home for further study. To his surprise, he found that the reverse side of the oilcloth bag had writing densely packed on its inner surface.
Li Hao also noticed this; it was an ancient form of pictographic writing, likely written with a brush in red ink. As they leaned in closer, Bai Yujing suddenly recalled a type of script.
"This can't be Water Script, can it?" Bai Yujing remembered that Professor Qiu had discussed this topic with him, and after returning home, he had specifically looked up information about it.
Li Hao asked Bai Yujing, "What is Water Script?"
Bai Yujing examined the writing closely and immediately replied, "I remember telling you that Shuiyuan Village is a village of the Water Tribe, which is a branch of the Baiyue Ethnic Group. Water Script is their unique writing system. However, not all members of the Water Tribe can master it; only the nobles and priests among them can understand it. It is usually used for ancestor worship, casting spells, and exorcising evil spirits. Nowadays, very few people can recognize Water Script, and those who can master it have never even heard of it."
"Do you recognize this?" Li Hao asked.
Bai Yujing thought for a moment: "We can give it a try."
Bai Yujing opened the System Mall of Exotic Creature Hunter and poured the white granules from the oilcloth bag into a piece of plastic wrap to keep them safe. Then he slowly entered each character from the writing on the oilcloth bag into the translation system one by one.
This was the inconvenience of using the translation system; there was a limit on the number of characters that could be inputted at once. Bai Yujing could only wait for results to come out before entering more text.
Li Hao watched as Bai Yujing bit down on his pen while lying on the ground looking at the oil paper. After some time, he would write down a few characters. Li Hao could only sit aside waiting for Bai Yujing and took out his phone. However, he was taken aback: "Damn, what kind of place is this? There's no signal at all!"
Li Hao raised his phone high and walked around the central square of the village but found no signal whatsoever; it indicated that he was outside service areas. He could only sit down and play some offline games on his phone.
Slowly, as dusk approached, Bai Yujing still hadn't finished writing. Li Hao stood up and said, "Old Bai, it's getting dark. We should hurry back; we can deal with whatever tomorrow."
Bai Yujing had been translating for so long, and he was just one part away from finishing the entire piece. For someone with a bit of obsessive-compulsive disorder, this was unacceptable; he felt uneasy not having completed it. Bai Yujing immediately shook his head and said, "It'll be done soon. Wait for me a moment, I'll finish it right away."
Li Hao could only stand by and wait for him. The sky grew darker, watching as the sun slowly sank behind the mountains, with even the last rays of twilight disappearing on the horizon. The entire village fell into darkness, a dilapidated place that was desolate and devoid of life, exuding an eerie atmosphere.
"Damn it, my phone is dead. Li Hao, shine your phone light over here; I'm almost done. We'll finish writing and leave." With no light around, Bai Yujing took out his phone to illuminate the paper but found it had no battery. He turned to Li Hao.
Li Hao quickly took out his phone to shine a light on the paper in Bai Yujing's hands, feeling a bit frightened. "Old Bai, let's hurry up and leave; this place feels off!"
Bai Yujing quickly finished writing the last few words: "Done! Let's go right away. What's wrong?"
Bai Yujing stood up, completely unconcerned, and said to Li Hao, "You're just being timid; it's only just gotten dark. What’s there to be afraid of?"
"Ah, la la, la, la la!"
A gust of wind swept through the alleys of the village, stirring up fallen leaves with a faint whistling sound. Amidst it all, a woman's singing voice seemed to emerge faintly, causing Bai Yujing and Li Hao to shiver suddenly.
"Ah! La!!! La!!!"
"Ding dong!"
"Ding dong!"
Accompanying the singing was what seemed like some kind of instrument or perhaps the sound of water dripping onto the lake's surface—clear and scattered. The sound rippled out slowly, blooming in their hearts.
Li Hao trembled and turned his head to look at Bai Yujing. "Did you hear a woman singing? You didn't bring that necklace with you again, did you?"
Bai Yujing felt a chill run down his spine. "How could that be? I left it in the car!"
"La la! La la! La! Ah... ah..." The singing was cold and clear, as if it penetrated deep into the heart, coming from all directions, quietly resonating in every corner of the village along with the wind.
"Ding dong!"
As the sound of the bell rang out, Bai Yujing suddenly felt a wave of dizziness. Shaking his head to clear his mind, he seemed to see Water Waves rising, and immediately turned around to see a towering Tsunami rushing down from the mountain behind the village, crashing into the entire settlement.
The colossal wave surged dozens of feet high, directly blocking the sky in front of him. Bai Yujing let out a loud shout, "Run! Hurry up and run!"
He immediately grabbed Li Hao and dashed toward the edge of the village, but there was no way to outrun the wave. A massive surge came crashing in, completely submerging the village and plunging it into the Bottom. Bai Yujing felt himself being swept into an enormous whirlpool, spinning rapidly with the flow of water as if he were circling above the entire village.
Bai Yujing's eyes widened as he watched the village sink into a vast ocean. He felt like a piece of rotten wood being tossed about by the current, with fragments of village buildings beneath his feet. He even saw the central square and Dead Tree of the village, along with streets and alleys lined with greenish-brown tiles.
"Ah... ah ah..."
"Ding dong!"
"La! La! La..."
"Hee hee!"
Bai Yujing heard the singing again; the sound was coming from below. Looking over, Bai Yujing saw a figure emerging from each well, accompanied by bubbles and laughter. However, no matter how hard Bai Yujing tried, she could not see their shadows clearly. Who were they?
Bai Yujing felt her body losing control, spinning in circles in the water as these figures continued to rotate around her.
"Smack!"
Bai Yujing felt a sharp pain on her face and immediately opened her eyes, finding herself staring into a dark well. "What the hell is going on?"
Startled, Bai Yujing realized one foot was on the edge of the well while the other was submerged in the water. Li Hao's panicked face looked at her, desperately holding onto her.
"Old Bai, you finally lost it! Why would you jump into the well?" Li Hao pulled on Bai Yujing's foot that was on the edge, trying to keep her from falling in. Bai Yujing quickly stepped away from the well, still feeling shaken.
"What just happened?" Bai Yujing immediately asked Li Hao.
Li Hao was panting. "Who knows? You went crazy and jumped into the well! I couldn't hold you back; how are you so strong? You dragged me along and almost pulled me in with you."
Bai Yujing recalled the singing and the figures surrounding her, feeling a chill run down her spine. She glanced at the streets of Shuiyuan Village; it seemed like every box around had a figure hiding within it, countless hidden eyes watching her, ready to pounce and devour both her and Li Hao.
"This place is not right; we need to get out of here!" Bai Yujing quickly gathered her things and ran toward the village entrance.
Li Hao followed closely behind Bai Yujing; he didn't want to stay in this haunted place for another minute.
