The traffic was heavily congested on the way, and in order to avoid missing the closing time of the Tokyo National Museum at five o'clock in the evening, Bai Yujing and Li Hao decided to take the subway. When they arrived at Ueno Station, it took them about ten minutes of walking from the station to see the museum.
This Japanese-style garden museum features the main building, Eastern Museum, Heiseikan, National Treasures Gallery, Horyu-ji Treasure Hall, Kuroda Memorial Hall, and Museum. The overall architecture is grand, but usually only two or three exhibition halls are open to the public. The scenery outside is also very beautiful, revealing a rich autumn landscape.
However, what concerned Bai Yujing and Li Hao more was the large number of police vehicles parked at the entrance. The museum had already set up a cordon, and many spectators were gathered outside watching.
"What’s going on? Is it closed this early?" Bai Yujing had come early to avoid such a situation, and it was only two o'clock in the afternoon.
Li Hao pointed at the police cars and the cordon and said, "It looks more like something happened!"
"Let's ask someone!"
Bai Yujing approached a person who had just exited the museum to inquire about the situation. She learned that there seemed to have been a theft inside the museum, and someone had died. This was not like Detective Conan, nor was there a shinigami elementary school student to assist the police in quickly identifying the culprit and capturing them. Therefore, the museum was in chaos; many tourists were trapped inside and could only leave after being individually questioned.
Moreover, even if there were no issues, they had to fill out a form. Foreigners were not allowed to leave for the time being to facilitate any necessary police inquiries or summons. The person Bai Yujing spoke with was a young man who had just come out of the museum.
"Can I ask what was stolen? When did this happen?" Bai Yujing asked the young man wearing a black hat.
The young man thought for a moment: "The incident occurred in the Eastern Museum. The deceased was found in the restroom of the Eastern Museum; it seems he had been dead for about two hours. As for what was stolen, it's unclear—apparently some porcelain items!"
The red-painted porcelain bowl that Bai Yujing was looking for was located in the Eastern Museum. What a coincidence that they happened to arrive just as such an incident occurred; it really felt like bad luck.
Suddenly, Bai Yujing felt something and turned her head to see a thin man in a black coat staring at her. He appeared to be in his early thirties, with long arms and long hair parted down the middle in a somewhat rustic style. When he noticed Bai Yujing looking at him, he turned his head away and looked in another direction.
He then turned and walked away. Bai Yujing tugged at Li Hao, who immediately looked at her and noticed she was heading outside. As they stepped onto the sidewalk, it became more crowded. Bai Yujing kept trailing behind that man.
Bai Yujing did not rush to catch up with him, just following him. The Man in Black Coat walked faster, while Li Hao trailed behind, confused. Bai Yujing remained silent, fixated on the front. The Man in Black Coat noticed Bai Yujing following him and immediately quickened his pace, running away rapidly. Bai Yujing realized that lingering was pointless; he originally wanted to see what the man was up to, but now he decided to catch him first and quickly gave chase.
The two ran at high speed, weaving through the streets and scattering the crowd, drawing a chorus of shouts and curses. At that moment, a green light appeared, and a large group of people crossed from the sidewalk. The Man in Black Coat squeezed through the crowd and vanished from sight. However, Bai Yujing did not move forward; instead, he turned into a side alley. After taking a few steps, he indeed spotted the Man in Black Coat's figure.
Bai Yujing continued to pursue him but soon found himself at a dead end, realizing that the man had disappeared. At that moment, Bai Yujing felt a sense of dread; this guy was going to ambush him. Sure enough, Bai Yujing suddenly felt a kick to his back and crashed into a trash can. A gust of wind rushed past him as he quickly rolled away to evade further attacks.
At this point, Bai Yujing saw the man again, who was holding a dagger and lunged at him. Bai Yujing immediately grabbed the trash can and held it in front of him. The dagger pierced through the plastic and got stuck inside. Bai Yujing twisted the trash can and managed to disarm the Man in Black Coat.
The Man in Black Coat then stepped forward and threw a punch at Bai Yujing's head. Bai Yujing dodged and swung the trash can at him, followed by two close-range punches to his chest and neck. The man staggered back from the blows but retaliated with a kick that knocked Bai Yujing back.
After they were separated, they charged at each other again. Bai Yujing's fighting style was quick and focused on close combat, while the Man in Black Coat fought with wide swings. Both were skilled fighters, and soon they were both showing signs of injury. Thanks to the Wing Chun memories transmitted by the Exotic Creature Hunter System and his training over time, Bai Yujing had grasped this martial art reasonably well, though he still had room for improvement.
However, it seemed that this man was not particularly adept at fighting either; they were evenly matched. After exchanging several blows, both bore injuries. Finally, taking advantage of an opening when the man threw a punch, Bai Yujing landed a heavy strike on the Man in Black Coat's nose, causing blood to spurt out as tears streamed down the man's face.
At that moment, loud shouts came from outside; it turned out Li Hao had rushed over. The walkie-talkie on the collar of the man's black coat crackled with sound. After saying something briefly, he kicked off from a nearby wall and climbed up a building with ease like an ape, disappearing in an instant.
"Old Bai, what are you doing? Why are you running so fast?" Li Hao gasped as he ran.
Bai Yujing immediately dashed out of the alley and chased after another direction just as a Black Van approached head-on. Through the car window, he caught sight of the Man in Black Coat he had just fought along with a woman driving.
Bai Yujing quickly took out his phone but did not expect that as the car window rolled down, the Man in Black Coat pulled out a gun from inside the vehicle. "Bang! Bang! Bang!"
Three shots rang out consecutively; this was a busy area, causing screams to erupt throughout the street as people ducked down or fled in panic. Bai Yujing was somewhat slow to react; however, due to the moving vehicle, the man's aim was slightly off—only the first shot hit Bai Yujing's backpack while the other two missed entirely.
Bai Yujing lay on the ground, as if he had been shot. The man withdrew his gun from the car window, and the vehicle immediately accelerated away into the distance.
"Old Bai, Old Bai, are you okay?" Li Hao emerged from the alley just as he heard the gunfire, which terrified him even more given his already timid nature. He hid in the alley, too scared to come out, and only after the shooting vehicle had left did he notice Bai Yujing lying in the street.
Bai Yujing weakly said, "I think I've been shot!"
"What? Let me see where you were hit! We need to get to Yuan right away!" After looking around, he found that aside from a bullet hole in the backpack, there was nothing wrong.
Bai Yujing exclaimed in surprise, "Wait, I wasn't hit? I clearly felt like I had been shot just now!"
Li Hao threw off the backpack and pointed at the bullet hole. "You’re lucky it didn’t hit you. If it had been just a little off, you would have been done for."
Bai Yujing was also scared half to death. "I’m really lucky to be alive!"
Bai Yujing hadn’t expected that guy to pull out a gun over a disagreement. He had thought his martial arts skills would give him an edge, but now he realized how naive that was; no matter how skilled one is, they can't compare to a bullet!
"Where are we now?" Bai Yujing sat up and asked. After those few shots, he felt sweaty all over and weak, as if his body instinctively feared such things and sounds.
Li Hao looked around and saw ancient architecture ahead, with red beads hanging and lanterns lit. The streets were bustling with people; many were crouching on the ground in panic. A few girls in kimonos peeked at Bai Yujing; it was clear that many had seen the man who fired at him.
"This is Senso-ji. How did we end up here? We should leave quickly!" Li Hao glanced around; it seemed he had been here before.
