For two consecutive days, Bai Yujing and Li Hao explored various shrines and temples in Fukui. Among them were famous ones like Seimei Shrine, Kihi Shrine, and Chōnen-ji, as well as smaller temples like Seikouji and Hakusan Shrine.
"If we don't find anything at Heisenji Temple, we'll have to look deeper into Fukui's local history to see if there are any abandoned shrines or temples. But Meili, your vacation is almost over, right? I'll have Li Hao take you back tomorrow afternoon!" Heisenji Temple is another name for Hakusan Shrine. After two days of searching, aside from the initial Kongyin Temple, they hadn't made any significant discoveries. However, the local scenery and cuisine had been thoroughly enjoyed by Bai Yujing and his companions.
Meili nodded. "Thank you, Bai Yujing and Li Hao, for taking care of me these past two days. I've had a great time and a wonderful vacation. I also really like the gifts you gave me!"
The three of them had become more familiar with each other, so their titles were no longer as formal. Hakusan Temple was somewhat remote, located on an undeveloped mountain with dense wild grass and forests. Large ancient trees towered everywhere, many of which were too big for a single person to wrap their arms around, although the paths were well-maintained.
Green moss covered the large trees, and the stone lanterns were also adorned with greenery. There was a small pavilion along the path leading to the temple, beneath which lay a small pond fed by mountain spring water. In Neon temples, visitors are required to wash their hands before worshipping, and this pavilion served that purpose.
As Bai Yujing and his companions washed their hands, Li Hao noticed a group of people approaching. Bai Yujing initially thought they were just tourists coming to worship but soon realized that one of them was Tong Wei.
"Quick, hide!" The three quickly grabbed their bags and hurriedly hid behind a wall made of stacked stones.
As the footsteps drew closer, they could hear snippets of conversation. They only caught Tong Wei's voice along with that of a woman who sounded somewhat cold and impatient. "We've searched for so many days without finding anything. Are you sure you didn't get the information wrong?"
Tong Wei nervously explained, "I only have this much information about that Neon folk kiln; it must be in this area, but it doesn't specify exactly where!"
The woman's voice rose sharply. "Are you sure you're not mistaken?"
"I absolutely am not! I've noted down all the information I could get, and you personally translated it! That writing is some Atlantis Language; I can't even understand it!" Tong Wei quickly deflected blame.
After hearing this, the woman scoffed but did not pursue the matter further. "I don't care what methods you use; five days have already passed out of the week. You only have two days left. If there's still no result, prepare to swim in the Pacific!"
"By the way, Miss An, why don't we ask that Bai Yujing for help? That guy is good at finding places; he's a professional. He can sniff out where the treasure is!" Tong Wei immediately started suggesting ideas.
Perhaps due to the lack of progress over these days, the Neon police were tightening their investigation. Miss An began to feel anxious: "Fine, if there's no result today, check on their current situation and bring those two here!"
"Yes, Miss An!" Quickly shifting responsibility away from himself made Tong Wei feel much lighter. Regretting getting involved with these people, he thought it would be best if he could drag someone else into his troubles.
Once they had left, Bai Yujing jumped out from behind: "Wow! This Tong Wei is really something else; he's trying to set me up! And who does he think he is calling a dog nose?"
"That's just a compliment on your skills; it's an acknowledgment of your abilities. Plus, that guy is so uncultured; where does Neon even have official or folk kilns?"
"I never expected to run into them here!"
"Thinking about it, it's strange that we haven't run into each other before since our goals are the same!"
Meili had been standing silently behind, and Bai Yujing finally realized that they hadn't considered Amiya Miri's feelings. One of these two could very well be the murderer of her father, and now that they were in front of her, it was hard to suppress the pressure.
"Is it them?" Meili suddenly asked.
Bai Yujing shook his head, "I'm not sure, but those two talking are among them. The others should be local gang members; judging by their attire and actions, they seem to be locals who came to help!"
"Let's go, we need to hurry down!" Bai Yujing suddenly remembered something and immediately led the three of them downstairs. Sure enough, they found an extra business vehicle in the parking lot below.
Li Hao asked, "With so many cars parked here, how do you know it's this one?"
Bai Yujing replied with a look of intelligence suppression, "First: We didn't see this car when we arrived. Second, with so many people, a smaller car wouldn't fit them all!"
Bai Yujing reached under the car, "Give me a tracker!"
"This is just for fun; I didn't bring that kind of thing!" Li Hao immediately said.
Bai Yujing popped his head out from under the car, "No way! Didn't you say you carry it with you for emergencies?"
"...I just happened not to bring it today; my bag is at the hotel!" Li Hao awkwardly avoided Bai Yujing's gaze.
"Tch, what a waste! At a critical moment, you drop the ball. Take out the spare phone from my bag!"
After setting it up and confirming it wouldn't be easily discovered, they found a place in Shanxia to sit for a while. Sure enough, after waiting for two hours, a group of people came down from the mountain. It was actually quite simple to confirm their location; buildings might change, but terrain is generally hard to alter. So as long as they walked around the mountain and checked the terrain, if it was too far off, it definitely wasn't the right place.
Seven or eight people got into a car and quickly left for their next destination. Bai Yujing and Li Hao then walked out of the shop and checked their phones; the route taken by this vehicle was clearly displayed.
"Let's go take a look!" Seeing that the other party hadn't found anything either, Bai Yujing felt much more relaxed and even lightened his steps.
Li Hao had been running all day and felt his legs getting weak; he didn't want to run anymore: "Haven't they already checked? Do we still need to go?"
"Of course! I only trust my own eyes. Don't slack off; hurry up! By the time we finish checking this place, it'll be dark. We can go back and have dinner!"
As night fell, Bai Yujing walked down from the mountain somewhat dejectedly. Indeed, this place wasn't easy to find after all.
Dinner was Beef Hot Pot, prepared by the Innkeeper for Bai Yujing and the others. Their daughter had run off somewhere after school, and it was Amiya Miri who had taken action; she had gotten used to it over the past couple of days.
During the meal, only Bai Yujing and Li Hao were arguing, exchanging insults. Usually, Amiya Miri would enjoy watching them bicker and secretly laugh, but today she kept her head down, not saying a word, and seemed a bit listless while eating. Bai Yujing and Li Hao had finished a large bowl, while Amiya Miri hadn’t even taken a few bites.
Bai Yujing set down his bowl and said, “Meili, are you still troubled by what happened with those two earlier?”
Meili nodded. “I imagined what kind of person killed my father. I thought it might be some ruthless gang member, someone who does evil without hesitation. But in the end, they turned out to be just two ordinary-looking people. I thought I could avenge my father, but I realized I couldn’t do anything at all. I wanted to confront them, but I just couldn’t muster the courage.”
“I can only follow behind you and sneak a look at them under your protection!”
By the end of her statement, Amiya Miri had completely lost her spirit. However, Bai Yujing said, “This shows that Meili is a kind person. If someone else does something bad, should you become a bad person yourself to take revenge? In the end, you would just turn into a bad person too. Isn’t that the most foolish thing to do?”
“And look, kind Meili is the most lovable. Just look at Li Hao; he’s already smitten with you!” Bai Yujing immediately nudged Li Hao, who dumbly nodded in agreement.
“Uh-huh! Uh-huh!”
Amiya Miri looked at Li Hao’s gaze fixed on her and immediately broke into a smile. “Even though I know you’re trying to comfort me, I’m still very happy. By the way, we’ve found them; should we call the police? I heard you say before that they seem to be looking for you, and I’m worried about them…”
“It’s okay; Li Hao and I are already prepared. You can leave the rest to us!”
“Okay!”
