A group of people moved forward again, this time three of them were more cautious. Li Hao held the torch and walked at the front, Amiya Miri stood in the middle, and Bai Yujing, with the highest alertness and awareness, brought up the rear.
"It should be the ability of Fishman Blood. Only those who have consumed Fishman Blood can possess such abilities. Others, even the offspring of such individuals, may not fully inherit this ability. You inherently possess this type of bloodline, but there was a problem during inheritance, resulting in genetic issues. Your sister Lin Ruoqiao should have inherited this bloodline more perfectly, but her abilities are significantly weaker than the first generation!" Bai Yujing speculated.
Li Hao was overjoyed; after the ups and downs, he seemed to become even more arrogant. "So does that mean I'm invincible now?"
Bai Yujing shook his head. "You wish! If your head gets chopped off or if you suffer severe injuries, it might not work. Didn't you have your dad's private medical team conduct research on this?"
"My dad is also worried about my issues leaking out, so he only allowed one trusted person to conduct it alone and didn't dare to fully disclose everything to him. You know how troublesome these matters can be!" Li Hao explained. Learning that he was so formidable made him walk ahead with confidence. Initially afraid of death, he now realized he couldn't die, which boosted his courage significantly. He felt eager to face those monsters as if he wanted to battle them for three hundred rounds.
Following the footprints ahead and delving deeper into the main mine shaft, Bai Yujing and the others encountered those monsters several more times. However, Bai Yujing had summarized an experience: as long as they hit their heads, they could take them down.
"Two more people have died!" Li Hao discovered another situation at the front entrance. This had happened several times already; the further they went back, the higher the frequency of monster appearances.
Bai Yujing unloaded the magazine and replaced it with a spare one. "I'm worried we might run out of bullets; we only have one torch left. If things don't improve, we'll have to retreat; we can't risk going further!"
"How deep is this mine?" Li Hao sighed.
"We're here!" Amiya Miri pointed ahead and noticed that they had reached the bottom of the mine. As they moved forward, the support structures disappeared.
Stepping out of the mine tunnel, they found themselves in a vast underground cavern formed by volcanic rock. Exiting through a low passage that required bending down, they saw this naturally formed cave.
Beside them flowed a small Underground River, but what flowed in it was seawater. It seemed there was a place directly connected to the ocean; it was unclear where this cavern led. On one side was the quietly flowing Underground River, while on the other side was a path lined with stalactites.
"Boom, crash!" The three saw a tsunami coming from the end of the Underground River, startling Bai Yujing and the others.
The massive sound of rushing water frightened Bai Yujing as the incoming wave swept over their faces and then quickly receded. Once the water had retreated, Bai Yujing reacted, "Wow, this place must be connected to the sea; that was probably a tidal surge, with seawater flooding back in."
Bai Yujing pointed towards the end of the Underground River: "We should be able to walk out from here directly, but we have no idea what the situation is! It could lead to the surface or to the sea; it might even be a dead end!"
Continuing forward, they reached the largest section of the cave, where the entire hollow seemed to stretch endlessly upwards. Bai Yujing and the others saw the most magnificent structure of their journey: layers of stones, stone pillars, and wooden frames piled together.
A building that combined elements of a Japanese Castle and a temple fused into one, constructed from stone with an ancient charm. Considering that Eight Hundred Nun perished after the Warring States period, this structure must be at least three or four hundred years old. The fact that it has been preserved so well is simply unimaginable.
The Temple was incredibly tall; just the base was like a city wall. Adding in the building itself made it feel like a skyscraper. At the top of the Temple, a large lamp resembling a lighthouse burned brightly, its flickering flames illuminating the entire cave. This must have been lit by Tong Wei and his group when they arrived first.
The Underground River wound around the castle, but here it seemed to reach its end; this Underground River appeared to have no source, seemingly formed purely by seawater flooding back in.
"Something's not right; if it were solely due to flooding, it wouldn't be enough to create this riverbed. Look at the traces left by the river; there must have been a source before," Bai Yujing thought this did not align with his assumptions.
Li Hao pointed around: "This is as far as it goes; where would there be any source of water?"
"Bang! Bang!" At that moment, gunfire erupted. Bai Yujing and Li Hao hurried over, wanting to enter the temple but had to cross an iron chain Floating Bridge first. When Bai Yujing stepped on it, he accidentally broke it underfoot; the wooden planks beneath had long since rotted away. The three could only carefully advance while holding onto the iron chain.
At this moment, gunfire from inside the temple became more frequent, making it easy to imagine how intense the battle was inside.
Li Hao said, "It seems like the Yoshiwara Society has clashed with Tong Wei's group. The people from Yoshiwara Society couldn't have come down here long before us; considering the timing, it's just about right."
Stepping onto the water from the Floating Bridge, I finally set foot on the stone slab. Looking up at the Temple above, it truly felt like a pilgrimage. The blazing flames at the very top illuminated the surroundings like a Buddhist light, and I couldn't tell what kind of fuel was being used; the flames shimmered with a golden hue, as if the entire Temple was glowing.
I walked up the Stairs, passing through the Paifang gate of the Temple. After a short ascent, I entered the courtyard, but the fighting parties were not in the courtyard; the sounds were indeed coming from inside.
"They're inside. Be careful not to alert them!" Bai Yujing whispered to Li Hao and Amiya Miri, who were following closely behind.
"Also, check your firearms and ammunition. Remember what I told you about using them; protect yourselves!"
After giving these instructions, they moved closer. However, the three of them stopped outside the main hall, peering through the windows to see inside. Two groups were facing off against each other, exchanging fire; bullets flew back and forth as they engaged in a lively shootout within the hall.
But what caught their attention was not this; it was a statue of Avalokiteshvara in the center of the Main Hall of the Temple. Standing at its feet, one could barely reach the lotus pedestal. More importantly, it was made of gold, radiating a brilliant golden glow under the light from above.
This was a Guanyin Avalokiteshvara Statue, seemingly around eleven or twelve meters tall. It wasn't gold-plated or anything else; it was a pure gold Giant Buddha.
"My goodness, such a large golden Bodhisattva?"
"How much do you think it's worth?"
Bai Yujing and Li Hao exclaimed simultaneously, their eyes completely captivated by this Golden Buddha.
