After returning to the Deep Market, Bai Yujing was taken to their office by Qian Jia within two days. Driving his car, Bai Yujing glanced at the five-story building located across from the courthouse, surrounded by government departments. Not far ahead were the Transportation Bureau and the Land Tax Bureau, but this small building had a sign for the Investigation Bureau, which looked similar to that of the Public Security Bureau.
Bai Yujing spoke with the security personnel, and after confirming via phone, he was allowed inside. Before entering, his belongings were scanned, and his phone was confiscated. He walked through the courtyard and up a tall staircase before finally seeing Qian Jia in the lobby on the first floor.
"Does your team have this many people?" Bai Yujing observed the bustling personnel, all dressed in police uniforms, including Qian Jia, who appeared more imposing in uniform.
Qian Jia led Bai Yujing upstairs. "This is the Substation. It's not just our External Investigation Division here; there are also colleagues from the Intelligence Division, Action Division, Security Section, and Archives Section. It's not only our team working here."
"Our Investigation Division's third group is under the Headquarters. This time it's our turn to be assigned here for the biennial Supervision and Audit Work. We happened to coincide with your issue, so we are also responsible for it!" Qian Jia explained to Bai Yujing.
Bai Yujing nodded in partial understanding as they reached upstairs. He noticed a man in police uniform waiting at the door of a large office. The man had an unusual appearance with a charming face and peach blossom eyes; despite wearing a police uniform, he lacked any intimidating presence and seemed less imposing than Qian Jia's stoic demeanor.
"Ouyang, is he inside?" Qian Jia asked as he entered the corridor.
Ouyang nodded but kept his eyes on Bai Yujing with an inexplicable hostility. "He's been waiting inside!"
Qian Jia pushed open the door and led Bai Yujing inside, followed by Ouyang. Inside sat a burly man in his thirties with a full beard, wearing a red jacket.
"Hello, Comrade Liu Xinwu. I'm afraid I need to trouble you this time!" Qian Jia immediately approached and shook hands with the man.
Liu Xinwu grasped Qian Jia's hand firmly. "I've already received my orders. Don't worry; I will fully comply with commands and complete the mission!"
Qian Jia introduced Liu Xinwu to Bai Yujing: "This is Bai Yujing, the person you will primarily be responsible for this time!"
Bai Yujing shook hands with Liu Xinwu and said, "Hello, I am Bai Yujing!"
Liu Xinwu looked at Bai Yujing with a pair of intimidating eyes, as if assessing him. After a long moment, he extended his hand. Bai Yujing felt as if his palm was caught in a steel grip. "Hello, Liu Xinwu!"
After a few people sat down, Qian Jia introduced Liu Xinwu to Bai Yujing: "Liu Xinwu, from the elite forces, currently responsible for logistics at the Polar Ocean Bureau. He has led teams deep into Antarctica for research missions and is very experienced. He will be the guide for your expedition."
Bai Yujing had sensed it already; just by looking at him, he could tell Liu Xinwu was from the military. Liu Xinwu glanced at Qian Jia, who nodded, and Liu Xinwu immediately stood up.
"Since it's been decided, let me explain the situation in Antarctica," Liu Xinwu said as he opened the laptop on the table. "This is a PowerPoint presentation I prepared from my previous expedition. Don't think that all members of an expedition are experts or professors; most are ordinary people. At the Antarctic Research Station, there are more construction workers, cooks, sailors, and engineers than researchers. So many people don't really understand the conditions in Antarctica when they arrive."
Liu Xinwu looked at Bai Yujing. "However, this time is different. We won't be hiding in the Research Station; we will be heading deep into Antarctica's interior, so I hope you can listen carefully!"
Bai Yujing nodded. "I am ready!"
"That's just your imagination. When you get there, you'll realize that what you think of as being prepared is actually no different from being unprepared!" Liu Xinwu spoke without any politeness.
"It is well known that we are located in the Northern Hemisphere while Antarctica is at the southernmost point of the Southern Hemisphere. To reach Antarctica, we must cross most of the Earth. Antarctica only has two seasons: summer and winter. However, you have chosen a very bad time; it is already late summer and winter is approaching. The average temperature on land during summer ranges from minus 20 to minus 35 degrees Celsius; during winter, it can drop to between minus 40 and minus 70 degrees Celsius." Liu Xinwu explained to Bai Yujing, making him shiver at the thought of such temperatures.
Liu Xinwu continued, "Therefore, during summer, there are about five thousand people in all of Antarctica—a place larger than half of China—housing fewer than a village's worth of people. These individuals are staff from various countries' small research bases established in Antarctica. But when winter comes..."
At this point, Liu Xinwu paused and looked at Qian Jia and Bai Yujing: "Fewer than seven hundred people remain in all of Antarctica during winter; everyone else must leave to escape the impending severe weather. Most small research bases and Research Stations will close."
Liu Xinwu gradually explained various situations and precautions regarding Antarctica to both Bai Yujing and Qian Jia. However, it was primarily directed at Bai Yujing since this expedition was for him and not for Qian Jia. Nevertheless, as the main person responsible for this operation, Qian Jia also needed to understand the challenges involved.
Bai Yujing, Qian Jia, and Liu Xinwu spent an entire afternoon in the office. During this time, Bai Yujing and Qian Jia asked Liu Xinwu several questions, which he answered one by one. The two of them gained a preliminary understanding of Antarctica, including the specific itinerary and important things to note.
In the end, Bai Yujing and Qian Jia shook hands with Liu Xinwu before he left the office. Bai Yujing then sat down to quietly reflect on what she had just learned.
Qian Jia looked at Bai Yujing and asked, "Do you know why I wanted you to meet him?"
Bai Yujing nodded, "To get an early understanding of the situation in Antarctica!"
Qian Jia shook her head, "It's not just that. There will be a total of twenty-three people going to the Antarctic Research Station, and six of them, plus you, will form an expedition team of seven. You will be the leader, and Liu Xinwu will be the guide. You two are the most important members of this expedition team, which is why I wanted you both to meet and get familiar with each other in advance. Liu Xinwu is someone you can absolutely trust, so if you have any issues later on, you can discuss them with him!"
Bai Yujing's mouth fell open; she was in charge of an entire expedition team. "Me as the leader? Isn't that a bit hasty?"
Qian Jia looked deeply at Bai Yujing. "Of course, there will be a lot of criticism. However, I still took on the pressure to confirm this plan's approval. So please don't let me down; otherwise, you'll see just how vengeful women can be!"
Qian Jia stood up. "Alright, the Research Team is scheduled to depart on the third of next month. Are you okay with that? How about your injuries?"
This was a concern for Qian Jia. However, the examination report from the hospital indicated that there were no issues. Bai Yujing immediately replied, "The injuries have healed; there's basically no problem. I will intensify my training during this time, and I’ll definitely be able to handle it!"
