Arriving in Ushuaia, Argentina, it was exactly seven in the morning on the third. Bai Yujing and the group set off around noon on the same day, having traveled for seven or eight hours. At this moment, it should be evening back home. Unexpectedly, after flying halfway around the world, they found themselves back in the morning of the third, creating a sensation of time travel.
Of course, this was just Bai Yujing's illusion; Argentina's time is eleven hours behind that of their home country, and the speed of the transport aircraft contributed to this experience of transcending time.
After disembarking from the plane, Liu Xinwu led the way. Bai Yujing took a moment to survey the surroundings. The air in Ushuaia was quite pleasant; looking up, one could see distant snow-capped mountains, and turning to another side revealed the ocean, with the city nestled between the mountains and the sea.
The unique terrain and special environment left a deep impression at first glance. The city was not large and not overly bustling but exuded a sense of refinement, giving an overall impression akin to a paradise.
As the logistics team leader, Liu Xinwu clapped his hands and approached everyone in the Research Team, saying, “This is a small airport, and we cannot stay long. Please line up to leave in order. The logistics team will assist with unloading cargo. Other researchers and engineers will be led by Li Xiang to the hotel for rest.”
“During the day, you can explore a bit; however, after six in the evening, try not to go out. The security situation in Argentina is not very good, and there are often some serious incidents. Even during the day, it’s best to travel with friends. If anything happens, call me immediately. Also, if you see parades or groups of fans on the street, try to avoid them. I know everyone back home likes to join in on festivities, but here these two types of gatherings can easily escalate into crowd incidents. Everyone must be careful!”
Finally, Bai Yujing concluded his reminders: “That’s about it; everyone should rest well tonight. We will board the ship at six tomorrow morning.”
Immediately, a professor named Zhu Wei stepped forward and addressed everyone: “Did you all hear that? Be sure to pay attention to Team Leader Liu’s words and stay safe…”
Professor Zhu Wei appeared quite young, certainly not over thirty years old, yet spoke with great authority. Her face bore a classic beauty; with a moon-like complexion and an oval face, her eyes sparkled like stars. Even dressed in thick clothing, her beauty could not be concealed.
“How about that? Surprised? Professor Zhu is so young! But she is indeed a genuine geologist with considerable fame nationwide!” said Liu Hai, a chubby explosives expert who seemed quite familiar with Zhu Wei.
Bai Yujing felt that Zhu Wei looked somewhat familiar but couldn’t recall where he had seen her before; he could only nod in agreement: “She’s indeed impressive. People say female PhDs are a different breed; she’s already a professor! Just look at her presence—unmatched! Any man would kneel before her!”
Liu Hai burst into laughter: “Just don’t let Professor Zhu hear you say that; otherwise, you won’t come out unscathed!”
“What? Can she ‘eat’ me?” Bai Yujing emphasized the word "eat," causing both of them to erupt into another round of laughter.
Bai Yujing, as a member of the logistics team, was also recruited to help with the work of unloading supplies from the aircraft alongside the workers sent by the Polar Ocean Bureau. The smaller boxes were manageable, but several containers were lifted out using machinery. After a busy morning, they finally unloaded all the supplies from the cabin and loaded several trucks.
Liu Hai was also panting heavily. Bai Yujing asked, "Is this how our supplies for the Antarctic Research Station are transported?"
Liu Hai shook his head. "Most are brought over directly by ocean vessels. Air freight is reserved for some important instruments and supplies; otherwise, with just this little bit of stuff, what good would it do?"
Bai Yujing nodded, but then someone patted him on the shoulder from behind. Turning around, he saw a strong man in his thirties. "Hello, are you Mr. Bai? I'm Zhou Jun!"
Bai Yujing suddenly remembered that Liu Xinwu had mentioned there was a polar explorer named Zhou Jun in their team, who had climbed Mount Everest multiple times and participated in extreme survival competitions in Antarctica, even winning third place. He was quite an impressive figure.
Bai Yujing immediately looked at Zhou Jun. "So you are Zhou Jun! It's a pleasure to meet you!"
Zhou Jun shook hands with Bai Yujing. "I’m flattered. Your name, Mr. Bai, is quite well-known; I often hear about you back home!"
After exchanging compliments, the logistics team had mostly finished their work. Everyone took off their down jackets and gathered together to chat. Once Liu Xinwu finished signing with the person in charge from the Polar Ocean Bureau, he quickly returned to lead everyone to the hotel.
Walking through the streets of Ushuaia, the dreamlike feeling became more pronounced due to the colorful houses. Many wooden buildings were mixed in, with red, blue, gray, and yellow roofs interspersed among each other. There were no tall skyscrapers, but it was filled with a warm atmosphere. The fresh cold air and the distant rolling snow-capped mountains made one feel as if they were already experiencing the essence of Antarctica.
"Look, the ocean and cruise ships!"
"That cruise ship must be going to Antarctica!"
"Ushuaia, with its unique geographical location, is renowned worldwide as the gateway to Antarctica. This ship is definitely headed for Antarctica, no doubt about it!"
People stood by the seaside, discussing animatedly. The dock was bustling with activity, with numerous boats moored and cargo being continuously loaded and unloaded. The color of the sea was a pure blue, and Bai Yujing had never seen such clean water; it looked as if it had no impurities at all. Sunlight reflected off the surface, creating sparkling glimmers that were dazzling enough to make one want to shield their eyes.
Standing there, it felt as if one could sense the pure aura coming from Antarctica. The sea breeze felt particularly refreshing against the skin, invigorating and uplifting.
The hotel room was a double occupancy, shared by Bai Yujing and Liu Xinwu. It was certainly not as luxurious as when Bai Yujing traveled alone or with Li Hao; the room was quite cramped but very clean. After Bai Yujing dropped off their things and lay down on the bed for a moment, shouts from outside broke the silence. It seemed everyone was eager to go out for dinner; they were already starving, and the thought of a feast was too tempting to resist.
Bai Yujing's stomach growled in agreement just then, and Li Xiang rushed over to push open the door, saying to Bai Yujing, "Bai Yujing, why don't you come out? They say there's a really nice Chinese restaurant nearby; you can also try some Argentine cuisine!"
At that moment, Liu Xinwu stepped back into the room: "No way, Bai Yujing! You have to stay in here. I'll bring you something to eat later!"
Bai Yujing was taken aback: "Why not?"
Liu Xinwu replied, "You're a public figure and have some fame abroad. We can't let your whereabouts be known right now. If someone recognizes you, it could jeopardize our plans. By the way, remember not to take off your mask until we get on the boat!"
Bai Yujing collapsed onto the bed: "Hurry up! Don't take too long; I’ll starve before you get back!"
"Don't worry, I'll bring you food as soon as I'm done!" Liu Xinwu promised.
Li Xiang gave a sympathetic look: "When I come back, I'll tell you all about the restaurant and the sights of Ushuaia!"
"........You might as well not come back!"
