At this moment, while Bai Yujing and others were excitedly planning their next move, the last group of guests before the winter in Antarctica arrived at McMurdo Station, located in the southern part of Ross Island, United States.
A helicopter landed directly on the open space in front of McMurdo Station, and the powerful wind generated by its rotor blades blew snow into the air. Catherine stepped down from the helicopter with a few people and couldn't help but sneeze deeply. "It's really cold here! I hate this bulky outfit!"
The two people behind her dared not speak; this woman was a black widow, well-known within the agency. Although she belonged to the National Clandestine Service, she never listened to the director's orders and instead directly contacted a certain deputy director. No one dared to offend her easily!
"You all, I'm Sam, the administrator here. May I ask who you are?" Sam was a chubby white man, probably not very young, but he had a baby face.
Catherine took out an ID from her pocket. Sam glanced at it and realized it was someone from the CIA's National Clandestine Service, a department that could not be offended. Sam immediately perked up. "Hello, sir. May I ask if you have any instructions for this visit?"
"First, find us a place to stay. With both ships and planes involved, and in this cold weather, it's truly a terrible place!"
"Okay, I'll arrange it right away!"
After Catherine entered the base, people continuously passed by in the corridor, each taking a deep look at Catherine as they walked by. This place had more wolves than meat; usually, aside from work, there was nothing else to do. A beauty like Catherine was truly a rare sight and extremely eye-catching.
At the deepest part of the corridor stood a handsome young man waiting there. His short golden hair and slightly grayish eyes were very striking. Upon seeing Catherine approach, he immediately stood up straight. "Hello, I am Paul, dispatched here to follow your orders. Please give me your instructions!"
Catherine stopped in her tracks and looked at Paul, seemingly very satisfied as a smile appeared on her face. "Mr. Paul, I remember saying I need a guide. What did you do before?"
Paul immediately replied, "I am a driver and guide; I was mainly responsible for leading researchers during their fieldwork in Antarctica!"
Catherine nodded and pushed open the door to enter a large hall where many people were working. "Very good; we really need your help. By the way, Mike, how is it going with the contact arrangements I assigned to you?"
A man named Mike immediately said, "The target has arrived at Zhongshan Station in Rasman Hills. I have already contacted two staff members at Davis Station nearby to closely monitor the actions at Zhongshan Station. Additionally, satellite surveillance will keep an eye on local movements, and we will receive notifications as soon as they take action."
Catherine turned around and said, "I don't remember our country having a Davis Station!"
When they came here, Catherine had conducted a very thorough research investigation. Mike nodded and explained to Catherine, "That's not our country's research station; it belongs to Australia. However, we have two non-staff members there, so..."
Catherine patted Mike's shoulder with satisfaction and said, "You did very well. Alright, everyone has worked hard on the way here. Let's rest well today and start working tomorrow!"
---------------
Bai Yujing knocked on the door of the station master's office at Zhongshan Station, preparing to chat with Nan Yong. Even the station master's room didn't seem very spacious; it was similar to theirs. However, Bai Yujing and his team shared rooms with two people each, with bunk beds that felt like storage spaces. In contrast, the station master's room was a single occupancy, but since the entire base was not very populated at the moment, even the double rooms were occupied by just one person.
"Hello, Station Master Nan. I have some matters I'd like to discuss with you!"
Nan Yong welcomed Bai Yujing inside. In his forties, Nan Yong was in his prime, sporting a full beard that made him look quite bold and spirited, reminiscent of a character from folklore. "What issues do you have? Just go ahead and say it!"
Bai Yujing nodded and said, "As winter is approaching soon, I checked the recent weather forecasts and found no severe weather conditions. Therefore, I would like to set off as soon as possible. We plan to reach Kunlun Station first, so I wanted to understand the situation from you!"
Nan Yong nodded in response. "Although I want to advise you that this is definitely not a good time to go out—especially heading into the interior of Antarctica—I know it won't help to say that. I can only support your work. If you need any assistance, just let me know. I have received full authorization to provide you with maximum support in terms of manpower and supplies!"
Bai Yujing immediately replied, "First of all, we need two snowmobiles, enough supplies and food for round trips, as well as some special items and instruments that were sent along with the research vessel. Here is the list; I would appreciate your help in preparing these!"
Nan Yong took the list and examined it carefully before looking up and saying, "No problem! I'll have everything ready for you by tomorrow morning. We happen to have three snowmobiles available; however, we are currently low on diesel fuel. But I will prioritize supplying you with what you need. By the way, when are you planning to set off?"
"Tomorrow!" Bai Yujing had already confirmed with Liu Xinwu. Since they were already here, there was no need to waste time; leaving a day earlier would allow them to achieve their goal sooner. Delaying was not beneficial for them.
Nan Yong exclaimed, "So urgent? I'll arrange everything right away; we can't delay your work!"
Bai Yujing stood up and shook hands with Nan Yong. "Thank you for your help. I have one more question: Are you familiar with the situation at Kunlun Station?"
Nan Yong nodded. "Yes, I visited three months ago. The personnel at Kunlun Station passed through here when they evacuated."
Bai Yujing immediately asked, "Can I ask how much supplies are left at Kunlun Station?"
Nan Yong thought for a moment. "There should be enough supplies for ten people for half a month. As for food, we need more; the oil is insufficient. The entire building relies on one generator room for power, and all heating, electrical appliances, and equipment depend on oil. The temperature in the inner circle of Antarctica can drop to minus forty or fifty degrees Celsius in winter; without heating, it's very difficult for people to survive!"
Bai Yujing nodded. "Okay, I understand!"
Bai Yujing took some time to chat with the staff at Zhongshan Station to learn about the situation in Antarctica. However, he heard more about the difficulties of the work. Many people thought coming to Antarctica would be a wonderful experience, filled with opportunities to see penguins, seals, snow-capped mountains, auroras, and so on. It wasn't until they arrived that they realized they were not here for tourism but for work. Most of their time would be spent in the base, and wandering around was absolutely not allowed. Life was monotonous, and outsiders were rarely seen.
Bai Yujing sighed a little. Just as he returned to his room, he found Liu Xinwu waiting at the door, tossing a hot water bottle to Bai Yujing. Bai Yujing asked in confusion, "Isn't there air conditioning?"
Liu Xinwu shook his head. "Due to limited supplies, the heating is turned off at night. During this time, you should use anything available for warmth! By the way, there's a ventilation device by your bedside; turn it on if you feel the air is stuffy!"
"No wonder no one settles here!"
