"You seem quite skilled at this? It doesn't feel like you haven't practiced before. What happened the day before yesterday? Were you pretending?" Zhu Wei struggled to keep up with Bai Yujing's speed as he followed behind.
Bai Yujing smiled, "I haven't skied in a long time; I'm just now slowly getting the hang of it!"
Bai Yujing glided over the snow on his snowboard, with a spotlight scanning the surroundings. Although it was polar night, it wasn't completely dark like the nights inland. The stars in the sky and the moon, which appeared for a few hours each day, provided some light to the earth.
What Bai Yujing didn't expect was that everyone present could ski and were very skilled at it, including Zhu Wei. Meanwhile, Bai Yujing could only awkwardly shuffle on the ground with his snowboard. In such cold conditions, there was no time for slow practice; Bai Yujing had to use thirty points to exchange for a proficiency in skiing.
After reaching their destination, Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun led separate teams: Bai Yujing and Zhu Wei formed one group, while Zhou Jun and Wen Feng formed another. They headed to two different locations to explore, primarily to clarify the local terrain and create simple maps before returning to let Zhu Wei and Wen Feng analyze the potential existence of Prehistoric Civilization.
Although there was no distinction between day and night anymore, everyone still followed a regular schedule. During the day, they explored their target areas separately, and at night they returned to camp to summarize their findings and rest.
Suddenly, Bai Yujing noticed a flash of red and purple light beneath his feet. He looked up abruptly and saw a long ribbon stretching across the sky, as if a fairy were waving colorful ribbons that danced in the air.
"Aurora!" Bai Yujing stopped in his tracks. This was his first time seeing an Aurora in Antarctica; it was truly an indescribable experience.
The ribbons looked like mischievous sprites from a dream world, playfully swirling in the sky, casting vibrant colors on the ground below. The Aurora spread from the corners of the horizon, its tendrils reaching across the starry sky. The purple-red ribbons stretched long over Bai Yujing's head, extending into the cosmos.
The star-filled sky complemented this beautiful scene, creating a harmonious response that left one speechless. While Bai Yujing was immersed in this stunning sight, Zhu Wei had already run ahead.
"We've arrived!"
Zhu Wei had identified nine locations most likely to contain ruins; so far, Bai Yujing and the others had explored six of them. This was the seventh location. Aside from spending a day on the journey, it was already the fourth day since they set out.
Bai Yujing hurried over and immediately found himself standing at the top of a cliff, below which lay an extremely deep Mountain Valley. It was unclear how many years of frost had frozen into layers of marks, resembling rock.
Below the cliff was an endless expanse that looked like a plain; the entire ground was flat without any undulations, resembling a mirror. At the end of this plain, the Aurora radiated, creating an extraordinarily spectacular scene.
Bai Yujing took several photos, which was part of his work along the way—collecting the surrounding terrain and images, then labeling them. There was a certain pattern to taking photos; otherwise, it would be difficult to utilize them later.
Zhu Wei said to Bai Yujing, "This should be the most likely location for Atlantis. Look at the terrain here; it must have been a very large lake in prehistoric times. According to the map, before Antarctica was frozen, this area of two thousand square kilometers was a vast landlocked lake. However, we don't know if it was freshwater or saltwater."
Bai Yujing nodded, "Does it matter whether it's freshwater or saltwater?"
Zhu Wei took out a blueprint and carefully checked the surrounding scenery. "Of course it matters! If it's a saltwater lake, it indicates that this place could connect to the sea, making the possibility of Atlantis Ruins here very high. Conversely, if it's a freshwater lake, we can almost rule out this location!"
"Merfolk; their city Atlantis must be built in a place that can connect to the sea to accommodate their lifestyle!" Zhu Wei put away the blueprint.
Bai Yujing nodded in agreement with Zhu Wei's view: "And the place we are looking for is the royal city of Atlantis. For Merfolk, this kind of terrain is like a huge natural harbor; establishing their largest city here is indeed possible!"
Zhu Wei took out a rope from his backpack. "Let's go down. If we can find ice crevices and locate ice layers older than ten thousand years at the bottom, we just need to find a way to bring them back for testing."
Bai Yujing asked, "But the seawater around Antarctica is already close to freshwater. Not to mention that after freezing, the salt in seawater will crystallize out. What use would that be when we bring it back?"
Zhu Wei glanced at Bai Yujing. "Testing still makes a difference! The base has professional instruments; did you bring your small ice drill?"
Bai Yujing patted his backpack. "It's been in my bag all along!"
The two of them dug a deep circular pit on the edge of the cliff with a shovel. After digging about a meter deep, they placed a rope inside the pit, just as if it were looped around a stone. They lowered the rope, secured it with safety clips and knots, and began to descend slowly.
The spectacular sight of the ice cliff was something that could not be seen anywhere else. To appreciate the unique scenery of the polar region, one had to pay a price. As they stood on the ice cliff and descended little by little, a sudden loud sound came from above, and a large amount of accumulated snow came crashing down.
Bai Yujing was startled; the snow hit both of them, causing them to sway back and forth while clinging to the rope. This scene was terrifying, and Bai Yujing was quite frightened as well, unsure whether there was an issue with the anchor above or if a more serious situation like an avalanche had occurred.
After stabilizing their positions and breathing, they continued to descend without further issues. They landed safely and let out a deep sigh of relief.
Zhu Wei was about to move forward when Bai Yujing immediately stopped her: "You said this used to be a lake long ago, and this terrain is clearly an area of ice cracks. It's obviously a place where ice has accumulated significantly. If we tie ourselves together with the rope, even if one of us falls into the ice, the other can pull them out."
Zhu Wei nodded: "You have considered this very thoroughly."
The two of them strapped on their skis, tied together with a rope, and started off one behind the other toward the center of the snowy plain, hoping it would bring them some rewards.
Bai Yujing dragged her skis as they moved slowly. After only a few steps, she suddenly felt a chill in her heart, as if sensing some dangerous presence. She quickly pulled out her gun from her pocket and aimed it at a corner to the side.
"What’s wrong?" Zhu Wei also sensed something was off and immediately stopped.
Bai Yujing looked around for a while but found nothing. She shook her head: "It's nothing! I might have misseen something. I just had this feeling that something was following us!"
