Li Xiang was outside dragging a sled into the storage room when he suddenly heard footsteps. He immediately looked into the distance and thought, "Could it be that the White Collar Team has returned?"
As Li Xiang walked outside, the wind and snow were fierce. In the distance, several figures gradually appeared, prompting him to run forward. "White Collar Team, you’re back so soon? Didn’t you say you would be delayed for another two days?"
Now in Antarctica, aside from their expedition team, there couldn’t possibly be anyone else around, so Li Xiang had no doubts as he approached. However, halfway there, as the darkness began to recede and the starlight provided a faint glow, Li Xiang realized that the newcomers were a group of strangers.
Although they were bundled up tightly, their clothing was clearly different from that of his expedition team. Catherine, who had been walking through the ice and snow for two days, also lacked the energy to speak and simply gestured to move forward. Everyone immediately took out their weapons and slowly approached the entrance of Kunlun Station.
Inside, lights were on, exuding warmth and a sense of civilization that starkly contrasted with the cold darkness outside. For those outside, it was more tempting than placing a mountain of gold before them.
In the activity room, Liu Xinwu was cleaning his gun while orange bullets lay on the table. Having come from a military background, he had a particular fondness for firearms. At that moment, there was a knock at the door, prompting Liu Xinwu to look at Liu Hai.
"Open the door for Li Xiang; he should be back after checking the warehouse!" Liu Hai had been acting somewhat unpleasantly lately, which Liu Xinwu noticed and didn’t appreciate.
Liu Hai opened his mouth but ultimately said nothing. He stood up to open the door. As soon as it swung open, he was met not only by the biting cold wind and snow but also by a deadly gun barrel aimed directly at his forehead.
Liu Hai jumped back in shock and collapsed onto the ground. "Who are you?"
He kept shrinking back against the floor while Liu Xinwu quickly sprang into action, loading his gun and curling up in a corner of the kitchen.
Liu Xinwu shouted, "Who are you? Please state your identity immediately. We are members of the Chinese Antarctic Research Team. Your actions have already violated..."
Before Liu Xinwu could finish his sentence, he saw bullets flying towards him. He immediately ducked down, not daring to show his face again. At that moment, Liu Hai also curled up in the kitchen, trembling in fear, a posture that was somewhat contemptible.
Liu Xinwu knew that Li Xiang had surely fallen into the enemy's hands; whether alive or dead was still unknown. There appeared to be six people on the other side, armed with submachine guns and automatic rifles, displaying formidable firepower. This place was a dead end—there was no escape and no retreat. Li Xiang understood that he had fallen into the most disadvantageous situation.
Taking advantage of the approaching enemies outside, Liu Xinwu suddenly turned off the lights. Then he threw a stack of stainless steel bowls outside, which created a loud clattering noise. The sudden darkness and commotion immediately threw the opponents into chaos.
At this moment, Liu Xinwu rushed out. Recalling the brief moment when he had turned off the power and thrown the bowls, he shot at the chest of the large man, hitting him because in the darkness, these trained individuals would instinctively crouch down and not dare to move recklessly. Experienced Liu Xinwu quickly calculated their movements and hit accurately.
The guy with the submachine gun posed the greatest threat; Liu Xinwu had to take him down first. He immediately attacked the leading woman, knowing he needed to control her to have a chance to turn the situation around.
In the darkness, Catherine sensed someone attacking her. Although she was quite skilled, she lacked experience in fighting blindly in such darkness. After several exchanges, she was subdued by Liu Xinwu, pressed to the ground with a gun against her forehead.
At that moment, the lights suddenly came on. Liu Xinwu was shocked; how could they find the switch so quickly? They weren't like Wen Feng, who had been here before. Just as he turned around, he saw Liu Hai pointing a gun at him.
The bullet fired first, followed by the sound of the gunshot. Liu Xinwu's mind went blank; there was no time for further thought as he lost strength and collapsed to the ground.
Catherine, furious and embarrassed, got up from the ground. She hadn't expected that one person could almost deal a fatal blow to her entire team. Seeing McLeod leaning against the wall, shot in the chest and barely alive, she suddenly felt a wave of fear.
Liu Hai still held his pistol, unable to put it down for a long time. He couldn't believe he had actually killed Liu Xinwu. In that fleeting moment, Liu Hai was torn inside; if Liu Xinwu had controlled Catherine, his identity as a traitor would be fully exposed, leading to Catherine's plan failing. At that point, he would be left with no way out—only death awaited him.
Thus, in an instant, Liu Hai made his decision. However, looking into Liu Xinwu's eyes one last time—eyes filled with disbelief and perhaps even contempt—he roared, "It's your fault! What country? What history? It's all a damn lie! Where does this money come from? They're all a bunch of lunatics! A bunch of lunatics!"
"One by one, they look down on me. Why? Is it wrong to be afraid of hard work? What’s wrong with taking a little break? Why should I push myself like you all do? Foolish!"
Liu Hai kept mumbling until he realized that Catherine had taken the gun from his hand, and then he came back to his senses. Catherine patted Liu Hai on the shoulder, saying, "You did very well. Don't worry, after we go back, we will arrange a new identity for you and give you a large sum of money, enough for you to squander for a lifetime!"
Catherine then turned to Paul behind her and said, "Take care of Mike and this person's body. Don't kill the one we caught outside earlier; we still have use for him!"
Catherine then looked at Liu Hai and asked, "So as the host here, can you show us around this base? We haven't had a good night's sleep in two days; I think you can understand our hardship, right? Mr. Liu?"
Liu Hai stood up. "You must be Commander Catherine. Please follow me; the supplies in the base..."
"Where has everyone else gone?" After listening, Catherine chose a lounge, which was the same one Zhu Wei had selected earlier.
Liu Hai followed beside her. "Everyone else went with Bai Yujing to explore the ruins!"
Catherine immediately asked, "What? Have they already found the ruins?"
Liu Hai shook his head. "No, they set off three days ago. Every night, Liu Xinwu—the man who just died—would contact Bai Yujing. However, as far as I know, there hasn't been any significant progress yet!"
Catherine nodded. "Tell me everything you know!"
