Catherine stepped on the sled, feeling as if she was hallucinating, seeing someone once again. How many times had this happened? In the vast expanse of snow, it seemed like no matter how far she walked, there was no end in sight; she kept moving forward, surrounded by a sea of white.
"Help me!" Catherine said, and then collapsed onto the ground. After that, she heard hurried footsteps and felt herself being lifted up.
When she woke up, Catherine saw an old man sitting beside her, which startled her. She immediately sat up and realized she was wearing a hospital gown, lying in a warm room on a bed.
"Deputy Director?" Catherine quickly recognized the old man's face.
The old man nodded. "If there's nothing wrong, you can get up. There are a few people outside waiting to ask you some questions, and I have some questions for you too!"
Catherine sat up from the hospital bed and followed the Deputy Director into a large hall, where she found a row of people sitting inside. Each person had a very serious expression, as if someone owed them thousands of dollars.
"Lieutenant Catherine, please explain in detail the process of your expedition. Why did only you return, and why did you bring back nothing of value?"
"So you're saying your plan completely failed?"
"Do you know what the other side gained?"
"Besides that, is there anything important you need to tell us?"
A series of questions made Catherine extremely nervous, while the Deputy Director looked disappointed. He stood up and walked out of the hall. Catherine immediately shouted, "Director, what is going on?"
A Suit Man beside her stood up right away and pulled out an identification card. "I'm sorry, Lieutenant Catherine. We suspect you of treason, so..."
As soon as the Suit Man finished speaking, several burly men burst in through the door, handcuffed Catherine, and dragged her away. "No, you can't do this!"
After resting at the base for a few days, Bai Yujing and the others stood once again in the open area of the base. Today, they would embark on their journey home. Li Xiang stood beside Bai Yujing, looking somewhat weak, while Wen Feng sat in a wheelchair, being pushed by Zhou Jun.
"Wen Feng, how are you feeling?"
Wen Feng nodded, "Much better. I never expected to survive. Honestly, how should I put it? I'm just so lucky!"
Bai Yujing glanced at Wen Feng's legs; unfortunately, Wen Feng's left leg could not be saved and had to be amputated. However, he still appeared to be in good spirits.
Wen Feng looked into Bai Yujing's eyes and understood what he was thinking: "It's okay, it's just a leg. If it weren't for the White Collar Team dragging me back, I probably wouldn't have made it home. Yesterday, I called my dad, mom, and sister; they are all waiting for me to come home. I applied to the station chief, and he said the organization has agreed to transfer me to another position. After I go back, I can choose wherever I want to go!"
Li Xiang gazed at the sky; it was clear and blue with light clouds swirling around. The bright sunlight shone down on him without any obstruction, making him feel incredibly refreshed. Li Xiang smiled and said, "We're finally going back!"
Bai Yujing asked, "What do you want to do after returning?"
"Besides the large sum of commission I received earlier, I've also been awarded a bonus. After I go back, I don't want to do anything; I just want to rest for a year. The doctor also said I need to take a good break!" Li Xiang replied with a smile at Bai Yujing.
"What about you, Zhou Jun?" Bai Yujing turned to Zhou Jun.
Zhou Jun turned back and said, "This experience was simply shocking. I didn't expect that I would make it through. To be honest, I had my doubts about you at first. I thought that although you had some fame, you couldn't possibly be a qualified leader. I even thought that we would have to turn back halfway!"
"The facts tell me that you did very well. If it weren't for your guidance, we wouldn't have made it back. It's a pity that Liu the Guide couldn't come back with us! After returning, I'll take some time off and plan to visit Tibet."
Zhou Jun is a believer in Buddhism; Bai Yujing had heard him mention it before. Although Bai Yujing always thought that faith was something typically held by older people—like his grandparents—he rarely saw young people who believed in it.
"Alright, I'll give you my number. If anything comes up in the future, we can keep in touch!"
"The plane has arrived!" Wen Feng shouted from his wheelchair, pointing at the helicopter slowly approaching from the sky.
Due to the sea being frozen, they could only take a helicopter to reach the Research Vessel waiting on the ocean, embarking on their return journey, and then land in Australia before taking a flight back home.
When the helicopter gradually landed on the Research Vessel that came to pick up Bai Yujing and the others, everyone realized that it was actually the Snow Dragon that had come for them. This is China's most renowned Antarctic research vessel and the largest, only ship capable of breaking ice in polar regions.
It was to be expected; in winter conditions like this, only the Snow Dragon could come to their rescue. They saw the Snow Dragon docked in the middle of a vast ice sheet, with pieces of the frozen Ice Surface cracking behind it, while the surrounding world was an endless expanse of Ice Surface covered with a thick layer of snow.
The bottom of the Snow Dragon was bright red, with "Snow Dragon" written in large letters on top. When the helicopter landed on the ship, Bai Yujing felt the grandeur and majesty of this icebreaker. Standing on the deck, it felt as if there was a tall building before him, layer upon layer, making one look up in awe. The massive icebreaker seemed to glide over the sea like two towering buildings, steady and powerful.
When Bai Yujing and the others disembarked, they were personally greeted by Captain Wang Zhong. "Hello, everyone. Thank you for your hard work. I heard that your research work in Antarctica was very successful. Could you share some details?"
Wang Zhong was also very curious. There had been much buzz online about a spaceship flying out of Antarctica, and now a Chinese Research Team had emerged from there, welcomed by their own. From some old friends, he learned that these individuals carried very important tasks with high confidentiality levels, but Wang Zhong couldn't help but ask out of curiosity!
However, all four remained tight-lipped. Although Qian Jia hadn't issued a gag order, they knew there were some things that shouldn't be discussed—at least not now before returning home.
Wang Zhong awkwardly smiled and said, "I understand. Then let's take a group photo together to celebrate your victorious return; it's a tradition!"
Everyone gathered on the deck of the Snow Dragon for a group photo. Bai Yujing pushed Wen Feng's wheelchair to stand in the center of the group, flanked by Zhou Jun and Li Xiang, while Wen Feng held a photo of Liu Xinwu in his hands.
With a click, the moment was captured. Seven people set out, but only four returned—one disabled and another seriously ill who would need recovery time. As they took the photo, everyone's emotions were complex; Wen Feng felt a bit melancholic, Li Xiang smiled, while Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun remained relatively indifferent.
