Bai Yujing set a chair on the deck and enjoyed the breeze. He had just finished his shift in the boiler room, which was stifling and hot, making it quite unbearable. After switching shifts with Bivis, he rushed to the deck for some fresh air.
At this point, it had been seven days since leaving Brobdingnag. According to Bivis's estimation, the ship would reach its next destination within the next couple of days.
The sky was devoid of stars, and as they moved further away from the continent, not even a hint of wind could be felt. At first, they encountered vast expanses of Cloud Sea, but now there wasn't even a trace of moisture in the air. The atmosphere was hot and oppressive, as if the entire world consisted solely of this ship slowly moving through the sky, with no sense of up or down, left or right. If it weren't for the compass in Bivis's hand, it would be certain that one could easily get lost here. This situation was truly difficult to endure.
On the deck, besides Bai Yujing, Will Hackman, Shen Fei, and Hank were present. Emma was in the kitchen preparing dinner. Will Hackman waved a thin wooden board like a fan, while Hank was observing something on the table with a small microscope. As for Shen Fei, he was sound asleep on the deck, snoring loudly.
"Everyone get ready; we're having beef soup tonight!" Emma announced as she brought up a large basin wearing gloves. Bai Yujing caught a whiff of the aroma from afar and rushed over to grab the basin.
Bai Yujing took a deep sniff and exclaimed, "Wow, this is truly delicious! Where did this beef soup come from?"
At that moment, everyone got up, including the still-sleeping Shen Fei, staring at the basin in Bai Yujing's hands with drooling mouths. "Today it's not apple pie and cookies? I'm about to throw up from all that!"
"Oh my God, beef soup with vegetables! Where did this come from?" Will Hackman exclaimed as he directly picked up a piece of floating beef with his fingers and stuffed it into his mouth, immediately drawing everyone's ire. However, Hackman didn't care at all; he licked his fingers. After days of eating sweets until they felt sick, everyone was eager for this delicious meal.
"What are you standing around for? Hurry up and set the table; let's eat!" Hank shouted.
Bai Yujing hesitated for a moment and said, "Should we call Bivis up too?"
"Why call him? Don't worry; I won't shortchange him. I'll save him my apple pie for breakfast tomorrow!" Hank said ungraciously.
Bai Yujing thought for a moment and quickly replied, "That's true; I'll save mine for him too. We'll split his portion!"
"Oh oh oh, hurry up and eat before he realizes what's happening!"
Setting the basin down on the table, Bai Yujing and the others immediately dove in like hungry wolves, filling their bowls with soup using spoons. There were also freshly baked breads from Emma to dip into the broth, and Bai Yujing and the others savored every bite.
Bai Yujing stuffed his mouth while asking Emma, "What's going on? Where did these things come from?"
Emma smiled and replied, "You brought them over. Didn't I organize a lot of gifts and items before? Some of them were a bit inconvenient to carry, and you said you'd help me bring them. I didn't notice earlier and thought you left them on Yangmayen Island. Just now, I checked our rooms, and after sorting the packages, I found an extra one inside that had several bags of dehydrated beef and dehydrated vegetables I bought earlier!"
Emma made an exaggerated expression and said, "You have no idea how surprised I was when I discovered these treasures; it felt like finding a gold mine!"
Bai Yujing immediately hugged Emma and kissed her, saying, "Well done, my dear!"
Emma pushed Bai Yujing away in disgust, saying, "Gross! Don't touch me with your greasy mouth!"
Huckman noticed some of the excitement and asked, "Several bags? Does that mean we can still have beef soup later?"
Emma nodded, "Of course, Mr. Hackman. There's enough for us to have several meals!"
Bai Yujing quickly interrupted Emma, "Hey, hey, hey! This was discovered among our gifts; it's private property—private, understand?"
Huckman immediately stood up, saying, "I just remembered; I have a bottle of brandy in my backpack that I've been saving. I can share it with you!"
"Wow! You're hiding something!" Bai Yujing realized that Will Hackman was also playing this game.
Hank immediately stood up as well, saying, "I have a pack of cigarettes; I can give you five!"
"Half!"
"Deal!"
Shen Fei had a bitter face; he came here unprepared and patted his pockets. "Can I get credit first?"
“...!”
When Bivis, drenched in sweat and wearing a gray tank top, finally ran over, he discovered that the soup pot was already empty, with even the broth and minced meat licked clean by the pack of hungry wolves. Upon learning that Bai Yujing and the others had just enjoyed a hearty beef soup meal, Bivis felt a wave of frustration.
“Oh! No, you bunch of demons, there should have been a portion for me!”
Hank, while picking his teeth, patted Bivis on the shoulder: “Boss, I’m really sorry about this. To make it up to you, I’ve decided to give you my apple pie for tomorrow morning!”
“Get lost, you guy, I’m not your Boss!”
As everyone fell into a deep sleep that night, the ship slowly sailed toward its predetermined destination. At that moment, in the distant sky, a vast expanse of Clouds and mist appeared, and while everyone was lost in slumber, the ship entered this fog.
Bai Yujing, holding Emma close to his chest, seemed to hear thunder in his dreams.
“Boom!”
Bai Yujing’s ears twitched at the sound of the second thunderclap, and a flash of white light flickered across his eyelids. He suddenly opened his eyes: “What’s going on? Is it thundering?”
At this moment, Bai Yujing quickly got out of bed and looked out the window, only to see thick fog outside; he couldn’t even see a meter ahead. In the dense mist, lightning flashed and thunder roared, each rumble echoing in Bai Yujing’s ears, deafening him.
At this time, Emma was also startled awake; she immediately sat up and wrapped herself in a blanket: “What’s happening? Ian, where have we entered?”
Bai Yujing furrowed his brows and shook his head: “I’m not sure yet, Emma. Hurry up and get dressed; let’s go outside and take a look!”
As Bai Yujing and Emma finished dressing and stepped out of their room, they happened to see Bivis and Hank rushing out from their room as well. Meanwhile, Huckman and Shen Fei were staying in another room together.
“White, what exactly is going on? It seems like we’ve stumbled into an unknown place?” Bivis said to Bai Yujing.
Bai Yujing nodded, "It should be within the Cloud Sea, but it feels different from the Cloud Sea we encountered before. We need to be cautious. What do you think? Are there any records of such phenomena in Lemuel Gulliver's notes?"
Bivis thought for a moment and shook his head, "No, there isn't!"
Bai Yujing pondered for a moment, then raised his head and said to everyone, "Mr. Hackman, you go to the Control Room first. Hank, you and Shen Fei go to the boiler room. If we encounter any situation later, we will need you to respond!"
"Emma, check all the doors and windows to ensure they are securely closed. Then go to the cabin and lay down all items. If we encounter an emergency and need to throw overboard the ballast sandbags, immediately call Hank or Shen Fei to take action. Mr. Bivis and I will go to the deck. If anything happens, come up to the deck and notify me right away; we will rush over!"
After assigning the tasks, Bai Yujing immediately headed to the deck with Bivis. As soon as they stepped outside, Bai Yujing noticed that the deck was shrouded in thick fog; nothing was visible, just a gray and black expanse.
Bai Yujing checked his watch; a day here was the same as on Earth, although the time difference was off. However, after arriving here, Bai Yujing had adjusted his watch according to this world's time zone. According to this world's time, it should be six in the morning, and dawn should be breaking. Yet it remained pitch black; it seemed that these Clouds were blocking all sunlight.
"Boom!"
Another rumble of thunder echoed as the Clouds stirred. Bai Yujing looked out and felt as if he could see distant Clouds shifting, as if something was passing through them.
"Moo!" A deep roar resounded throughout the Cloud Sea, shaking the ship as if it were swaying.
Bai Yujing and Bivis looked out but saw nothing except for two eyes the size of houses glowing in the dark fog.
"What exactly is that?" Both Bai Yujing and Bivis felt a sudden daze in their minds, horrified by what they saw, and simultaneously thought of the same question!
