Bai Yujing The four individuals were fully armed, surrounding themselves tightly, their faces covered with gas masks as they slowly advanced along a wide gorge. The further they walked, the denser the fog became. At first, they could see clearly within a few dozen meters, but as they reached deeper into the gorge, even Li Hao, who stood behind them, began to appear somewhat blurry. It seemed that if they moved a few meters away, they wouldn't be able to see each other at all.
The four quickly retreated from the gorge and began to discuss among themselves. After removing his mask, Bai Yujing immediately asked, "How can we enter the mountains with such thick fog? Once we go in, we won't even be able to determine our direction. Is the compass usable?"
Zhong Qiang held the compass in his hand and tapped it a few times, only to find the needle spinning wildly and shaking without indicating any position. "No, it seems there's some inexplicable magnetic field here; it can't be used at all!"
Bai Yujing glanced at the dense fog and turned to Lao Qi: "Is this really some kind of miasma? It doesn’t feel quite right; it doesn’t seem like fog either. Normally, in such dense fog, the humidity would be extremely high, but when we just passed through, it felt very dry inside. This isn't water vapor, nor does it resemble any miasma I know of. What on earth is this?"
Lao Qi hadn't expected to encounter such a strange phenomenon. Even after living here for decades, he had never seen such peculiar fog. Both its extent and nature were eerily unsettling.
This fog only appeared upon entering this gorge; once outside, not a trace of it could be seen, as if something was restricting it within: "This fog shouldn't be toxic; it's not miasma. Wearing these gas masks doesn't help!"
Lao Qi immediately said, "No, there's something wrong with this fog. People who went in before have reported seeing some strange things..."
As soon as Lao Qi spoke up, Zhong Qiang quickly pulled him back from behind. Bai Yujing shot a sharp look at Lao Qi, who then realized he had let something slip and stopped abruptly. However, Bai Yujing pressed on: "What strange things? Didn't you say that once the fog rises in the mountains, no one has ever gone in again?"
Lao Qi quickly replied, "It was the herbalist who first discovered this strange fog. Many poachers and herbal farmers took risks to enter the mountains back then, but only one person came out alive. He once mentioned discovering bizarre ancient residences and..."
At this point, Lao Qi paused. Bai Yujing stepped forward and pressed him: "And what?"
"And a battlefield. That herbalist said he saw thousands of ancient soldiers fighting in a mountain valley, with drums beating!" At that moment, Zhong Qiang spoke up to Bai Yujing.
Bai Yujing was taken aback: "What is this? Ancient residences in Shennongjia? Who would live here? And ancient soldiers fighting—could it be an illusion or a projection left over from ancient times? Such strange phenomena are not unheard of; I've heard that similar occurrences have happened in places like the Forbidden City, Jerusalem, and many others!"
Zhong Qiang nodded, "That's right. We believe what he saw was an illusion, which allows us to infer that this fog likely has hallucinogenic properties. Although it is not deadly, it can trap people inside, causing them to be stuck in illusions and eventually die within."
Li Hao immediately expressed his concern, "Old Bai, do you think Lin Ruo Qiao might also be trapped inside because of this issue? We need to go in right away; time is of the essence!"
Bai Yujing glanced at Li Hao and took a deep breath. "Alright, let's go in. We'll tie ropes to our belts to prevent getting lost in the fog. Once inside, we need to pay attention to a few points: first, stay vigilant and be aware of any situations that may arise around us; second, stick together. If anyone falls behind, stay put and wait for us; don’t run off. We will definitely come back the same way to find you."
Lao Qi wanted to act a bit difficult, but Zhong Qiang pulled him back. The two agreed with Bai Yujing's decision, and the four of them entered the core area of Shennongjia through the Gorge. Zhong Qiang realized that Bai Yujing likely guessed their true purpose for entering the mountains was not entirely innocent and was not just a simple guide. However, they were already here, and it wasn't time to confront each other yet.
After making the decision, Bai Yujing immediately turned to Lao Qi and asked, "Once we enter the mountains with this thick fog, can you find the way based on your past experience? Can we still follow our original plan to locate that village in the photo?"
Seeing how serious Bai Yujing was, Lao Qi pondered carefully before slapping his thigh. "No problem! I've been through here several times. Although I haven't seen that village before, I suspect it's in a mountain hollow towards the northwest as we go up. With this thick fog, we might take a wrong turn or get lost; however, I should not lose my way inside. I know many places here well enough; I guarantee I can lead you in and bring you out."
Bai Yujing felt it wouldn't be that simple. Old Smoky, who brought Lin Ruoqiao and them into the mountains, had lived deep in the mountains for years and was even more familiar with the area than Lao Qi. He also hadn't come back after entering; it was likely very treacherous inside. However, Bai Yujing didn't dare say much since Lao Qi had finally mustered up his courage; he couldn't undermine his confidence right at the start.
Bai Yujing patted Lao Qi on the shoulder with a reassuring expression. "Alright, Lao Qi, we'll rely on you this time!"
The group put their masks back on and secured their ropes to their belts. This time, Lao Qi led the way at the front while Bai Yujing and Li Hao followed behind him in order, with Zhong Qiang bringing up the rear. The Gorge appeared very spacious and large as they walked through it; combined with the heavy fog and dim lighting that was unevenly distributed, Bai Yujing felt an indescribable sensation.
It felt like walking through a ghost gate; especially with the jagged rocks in the Gorge and the sound of wind howling like wailing spirits intensified Bai Yujing's feelings.
"I feel a bit uneasy; that sound is really frightening!" Li Hao said as he walked behind.
Bai Yujing turned back and glared at him. "Don't talk; it's just the sound of the wind!"
"Tap tap tap!"
"Snort snort!"
"Tap tap tap tap!"
"Clang!"
Bai Yujing walked deep into the Gorge, where the thick fog made it difficult to see more than a few meters around. At that moment, strange sounds came from ahead, resembling the sound of hooves and the whinnying of animals. The noise was peculiar; it didn't sound like horses but rather more like the roar of wild beasts, accompanied by what seemed to be the sound of wheels striking against stones.
As the sounds grew closer, a cacophony of hoofbeats and horse calls intertwined. Although nothing could be seen in the dense fog, Bai Yujing could sense that a large force was approaching from ahead.
"Quick! Everyone move to the left and stick close to the wall!" After reacting, Bai Yujing shouted loudly. The four people immediately began to run swiftly toward the edge of the Gorge. Bai Yujing also sprinted forward. At this moment, something behind them had broken through the fog and was closing in on Bai Yujing's position. Turning his head to look back, Bai Yujing was instantly stunned into silence.
He saw a strong man dressed in Vine Armor, with tattoos on his face that exuded a savage aura, riding a strange fierce beast that leaped out of the fog. The beast was about two meters long and one and a half meters tall, with powerful limbs. Its body resembled that of a wolf but had the head of a donkey, with a tuft of mane trailing behind its head. It looked imposing as it charged past Bai Yujing, its mouth open and panting, revealing sharp fangs.
This strong warrior, filled with a menacing aura, leaped over Bai Yujing's head while riding this ferocious beast and disappeared back into the fog without even glancing at Bai Yujing and his companions.
"What? What on earth is that?"
