Thick fog enveloped the area, shadows loomed heavily, and amidst the darkness, there was a sense of eerie silence. This was the original state of the Gorge, but at this moment, it had transformed into a cacophony of battle sounds. Bai Yujing could hear the cries of mounted beasts, the shouts of combatants, and the rumble of war chariots as they crossed paths in the mist. Visibility was limited to just a few meters around them, making it impossible to see the entire situation. However, Bai Yujing could sense a large number of people flooding into the Gorge, and not far away, the clashing of metal echoed from a fierce struggle.
A few individuals felt cold sweat break out all over their bodies. If they truly encountered war, Bai Yujing wouldn't find it terrifying; however, this situation was simply too bizarre—it clearly shouldn't be happening here.
The group instinctively pressed against the wall of the Gorge and lowered their bodies as they ran outward. They didn't know how long they had been running before finally bursting out of the Gorge, distancing themselves from the sounds of battle.
Everyone was panting heavily. Li Hao looked at Bai Yujing in shock: "Was that... was that real just now?"
Bai Yujing shook his head: "I don't know; it's too strange. Regardless of whether it's real or not, do you dare to test it?"
At that moment, Zhong Qiang turned back to look behind him and was instantly stunned. After taking a few steps forward, he turned back to Bai Yujing: "What’s going on? We just ran out from here, right?"
Bai Yujing turned to look behind him and discovered a massive cliff standing not far from them, shrouded in swirling clouds and mist. The top was obscured from view, with steep layers of rock appearing to stretch endlessly toward the sky.
Bai Yujing hurriedly ran back and felt along the wall. Looking left and right, he realized they had just come through this way, yet now there stood a sheer cliff. What was going on? How could this be possible?
"Could it be an illusion?" Bai Yujing glanced at Li Hao and Lao Qi and found that none of them seemed abnormal; their touch felt very real. His mental state was also clear—he didn't feel like he was experiencing an illusion.
Bai Yujing shouted to the three of them: "Let's search around! We clearly just came out from this side of the Gorge. How could such a large Gorge just disappear?"
The four of them searched along the cliffside, making a wide circle but finding nothing. They all stopped and exchanged puzzled glances.
Lao Qi had never seen anything like this before and was completely flustered, resembling a startled bird: "How could this be? How is this possible? We clearly walked out from here, right? How can we not find an exit? It should be right here! It should be right here..."
Zhong Qiang was also drenched in cold sweat, his back soaked: "Could it be the fog's fault? I knew there was something off about this fog. We clearly brought gas masks, so why is this happening?"
Bai Yujing suggested again, "Let's close our eyes and rely entirely on touch and feel to walk around this rock wall. Maybe we can discover something."
The four of them calmed down and walked around again. When they reached the other end, they still found nothing. Li Hao couldn't help but ask, "What's going on? Are we stuck in a ghost wall?"
Zhong Qiang felt a bit frightened as well. He had rich experience in adventures and jungles, but he had never encountered anything like this: "This strange fog, those soldiers we just saw fighting, the vanished entrance—there's definitely something wrong with this place."
Lao Qi couldn't hold back any longer upon hearing this: "I told you not to come in! Qiangzi, why did you drag me along? We're doomed this time; we're trapped here and can't get out. With what we just saw, we must have been left here by the King of Hell!"
Bai Yujing immediately shouted, "What are you panicking about? We're still alive! What’s there to be afraid of? We have food, water, guns; we're in the jungle. As long as we're alive, we can find a way to solve our problems. If we can't get out of here, we can keep going into the mountains; we'll surely find a way out!"
Hearing Bai Yujing's shout, everyone calmed down. These people, including Li Hao, were not that weak; their courage and bravery were beyond ordinary. They had just been startled by the scene of the ancient battlefield and panicked when they realized their way out was blocked.
Now that Bai Yujing mentioned that they had food and drink in the mountains, even if they were trapped, what could they do? As long as they were alive, they could always find a way out.
"Bai Yujing is right; there's no way out here. Let's keep going deeper; maybe we'll discover something. Lao Qi, wasn't that herbalist able to come out from here before?" Zhong Qiang also regained his composure and forced a smile at Lao Qi.
Lao Qi shook his hand: "This place is too eerie; it's completely different from before. I can't guarantee that the path we find will be the right one!"
The four of them set off again. After walking a distance, Bai Yujing used his knife to mark trees or rocks around them so that they could find their way back later. This was also to prevent themselves from getting lost in the fog and walking in circles.
Lao Qi led the way with his Dog Leg Knife, clearing a path he was very familiar with. The four of them crossed numerous obstacles and ventured deeper into the fog. In this dense forest combined with the mist, Bai Yujing and the others felt as if they were going in circles without any sense of progress.
Surrounded by trees, mist, and bushes, there were no targets or any suspicious markers to determine their location. If it weren't for Bai Yujing constantly marking the way, Lao Qi and Zhong Qiang would also be unsure if they were on a side path. Bai Yujing even began to doubt whether they had lost their direction.
At this moment, Lao Qi started to talk more, perhaps because the place was too quiet and eerie, prompting him to speak up: "You know, I suddenly remembered something. Those barbarian warriors in Vine Armor that just brushed past us—did you notice the creatures they were riding?"
Bai Yujing looked at Lao Qi and asked, "Do you recognize those things?"
Lao Qi glanced at Qiangzi and said, "Qiangzi, you should have some impression of them. There have been rumors about these creatures around here for a long time, but I've only heard about them; I've never seen one!"
Zhong Qiang thought for a moment and then said, "Are you talking about the Donkey-headed Wolf?"
Bai Yujing and Li Hao looked at Zhong Qiang with great curiosity. Zhong Qiang explained, "The Donkey-headed Wolf, also known as the Mule-headed Wolf, has many legends associated with it since ancient times in Shennongjia. It has the head of a wolf and the body of a donkey, extremely fierce, capable of battling tigers and leopards. In recent years, some people have claimed to have seen it in the nearby mountains. According to scientists' research, the Donkey-headed Wolf is likely an extinct animal called the Sand Cat, which lived between seven million and seven and a half million years ago. It might still exist in Shennongjia."
Bai Yujing pondered this: "So what we saw earlier might actually be real? Could it be an image left behind from an ancient battlefield scene that has reappeared before us due to the mist and geographical environment here?"
Zhong Qiang nodded: "It's very likely that this is the case. Just now, those people couldn't see us; even in thick fog, such a situation wouldn't occur!"
With this explanation, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. After all, no one wanted to encounter ghosts. If it could be explained through scientific phenomena, it became more acceptable: "So it was all fake. But that scene felt so real! The man riding that Mule-headed Wolf—I could even feel the heat from its breath!"
"Oops!"
While walking on a small hillock, Li Hao was talking as he walked when he accidentally stepped awkwardly and slid down the slope.
