Bai Yujing ran swiftly along the wide avenue, watching as the surrounding buildings gradually became real, even the lights in the streets began to glow faintly. The thick fog completely receded, revealing the entire expansive ancient city.
Bai Yujing rushed toward the large gate beneath the city wall, noticing an unknown script inscribed on the wall above the gate. It was not Eastern Zhou bird script, but rather similar to the characters on the stone tablet in a photo Bai Yujing had seen before. If Bai Yujing could stop and decipher it at that moment, he would realize it was a character for "meteor."
As Bai Yujing crossed the avenue, he felt the lights of various houses gradually turning on. He could even see that the doors of those houses were slightly ajar, revealing evil and greedy gazes peering out, fixated on Bai Yujing and his companions, waiting for the right moment to swarm out and devour them.
Others also sensed those piercing gazes, causing their hair to stand on end. Li Hao even caught glimpses of flickering shadows through the light and paper windows, resembling both demons and ghosts. This feeling was far more terrifying than if actual monsters had burst forth. Everyone desperately picked up their pace, running even faster.
As Bai Yujing drew closer, the moon gradually emerged from behind the clouds. It was a half-moon night, shining brightly in the sky like a jade plate, casting a serene glow. At that moment, the city gate began to close slowly. Taking advantage of the moment before the full moon was completely revealed from behind the clouds, Bai Yujing and his group rushed out of the city gate.
"Don't stop! Keep running! We need to get out of here!" After seeing several people escape beyond the city gate, Bai Yujing immediately relaxed and crouched outside, gasping for breath. After sprinting at full speed, everyone felt somewhat exhausted, especially Lao Qi, who despite having his snake venom cured still felt weak.
Bai Yujing looked back at the towering city wall. Flags fluttered atop it, and with their waving appeared figures clad in armor—sturdy silhouettes standing rigidly on the wall. They were completely still, indistinguishable in form but exuding a palpable sense of malice and murderous intent.
Li Hao waved his hands in protest: "I can't run anymore! I've been hiking all day and was chased by a Polar Bear all this way. I can't keep going! We've been sprinting since we got here and even got caught in a rainstorm—I'm really done for!"
Bai Yujing angrily lifted Li Hao: "Even if you can't take it anymore, you have to run! Get up! Everyone get up and hurry!"
Under Bai Yujing's urging, they started running again. Bai Yujing glanced around; compared to the vast rivers and lakes from earlier that morning, this river was much smaller. There was even a bridge over it. The group quickened their pace as Bai Yujing felt an unshakable sense of urgency and danger lingering in his heart.
After running for quite a distance and reaching the riverbank, Bai Yujing turned back just in time to see the city gate slowly opening. A mounted troop charged out from within, wearing helmets and armor as they rushed toward Bai Yujing's group. In the dim moonlight over the vast land, Bai Yujing could even see red glimmers emanating from their eyes.
"Run!" At this point, there was no need for further urging; Bai Yujing shouted as everyone was terrified by this pursuit. They had been chased by a Polar Bear during the day but had not panicked like this. The group scrambled onto the wooden bridge; however, their legs could not outrun the mounted beasts of their pursuers. As Bai Yujing and his companions reached halfway across the bridge, they saw their pursuers already crossing over from the city and river towards them.
"Bai Yujing" shouted immediately, "Li Hao, give me the alcohol from your backpack!"
"Li Hao" quickly stopped rummaging and threw a bottle from his backpack. "Bai Yujing" smashed it on the ground, and the alcohol spilled all over the wooden bridge. He then opened his lighter and ignited it. At that moment, the leading cavalryman riding a beast charged forward, holding a spear that glinted coldly in the bright moonlight.
However, the bridge was only wide enough for one person on a beast to pass through, and they couldn't move quickly. When he reached halfway across, he saw flames shooting up into the sky as the entire bridge caught fire, forcing them to retreat.
At this point, "Bai Yujing" and the others showed expressions of joy: "Alright, they can't come over!"
"Li Hao" smugly remarked, "Is it over now? How about that, are they dumbfounded?"
Before "Li Hao" could finish speaking, he saw those guys actually preparing to wade through the river on their beasts. This immediately startled "Bai Yujing" and the others, who quickly scrambled up toward the peak of "Shennongjia."
As those cavalrymen crossed over the river, they suddenly saw the water churning violently. The once calm surface transformed into tumultuous waves as if countless giant beasts were thrashing beneath.
"Bai Yujing" watched in horror as this group of cavalry was dragged down by something in the river, each one letting out a scream. Blood surged in the water like boiling liquid, and grotesquely large black heads emerged from the depths, resembling pieces of black speckled stone. They emitted cries akin to a baby's wail. These creatures appeared to be over three meters long, with enormous jaws that could easily swallow a person whole. Their eerie cries sent chills down one's spine.
It seemed these monsters sensed "Bai Yujing" and his companions' gaze and turned to look at them while emitting baby-like cries. Remembering that they had just crossed this river moments ago, "Li Hao" couldn't help but swallow hard. "What on earth is this?"
"Zhong Qiang" seemed to recognize what they were: "Looks like a Giant Salamander? But that head is way too big!"
"Xu Lei," seemingly unfamiliar with such creatures, asked, "What is a Giant Salamander?"
"Bai Yujing," however, knew a bit about it: "It's a type of mudfish, a nationally protected amphibian species. It's called mudfish because its cry sounds like a baby. But I've never seen one this big!"
Li Hao, after several shocks, could no longer bear it: "Let's hurry and get out of here, away from this cursed place. I hope nothing else weird happens!"
Bai Yujing nodded, and the group dove into the forest. They had reached the main mountain range of Shennongjia. The purpose of Bai Yujing's journey, as well as their target location, should be right here. At the same time, this was also the destination for Lin Ruoqiao and her group. If nothing unexpected occurred, they were likely to find clues or even traces of Lin Ruoqiao here.
However, it was getting late, and the various situations that had arisen throughout the day had left everyone feeling exhausted. Bai Yujing felt that as they got closer to the main mountain range, the bizarre occurrences increased, along with the strange creatures. There were peculiar Polar Bears and odd Giant Salamanders; who knew what else lurked in Snake Valley!
"By the way, there was a character above that ancient city!"
