After listening to what they said, Bai Yujing nodded, but looked at Xu Lei: "So what's the deal with your invitation to Lin Ruoqiao? Why do you say she deceived you?"
Lao Qi glanced at Xu Lei: "This guy is a descendant of the Jiang clan, a descendant of Shennong. Their family is very secretive, and one peculiar thing about them is that they can reincarnate!"
Bai Yujing immediately asked, "Reincarnate?"
Lao Qi nodded: "That's right, but that's just one way to put it. I'm not entirely clear on the specifics. She is a bloodline descendant of the Jiang Clan. Every time she dies, she is reborn among her kin who share the same bloodline. Generation after generation, each incarnation looks the same because her soul has not changed since thousands of years ago."
Bai Yujing looked at Lao Qi: "Are you kidding? You mean reincarnation?"
Lao Qi nodded: "You're not wrong; it's quite absurd. But you can ask her yourself. Our Minister has said that people like her often see fragments of memories from their past lives, which is a form of immortality. Ordinary people have some spirit but lack a soul; they live and die, which is completely different from her existence—her soul transcends thousands of years without perishing, living forever!"
Xu Lei shouted angrily: "What nonsense are you talking? I'm not some ancient monster who lives for thousands of years!"
Bai Yujing looked at Xu Lei in surprise, not expecting this guy to be remarkable: "How do you know all this?"
Lao Qi immediately replied: "Our Minister told me!"
Bai Yujing smiled: "Your Minister really is quite mysterious, knowing everything. It really has the feel of a behind-the-scenes puppet master. If I get out of here, I definitely want to have a good talk with him!"
"By the way, you still haven't said why you invited Lin Ruoqiao to join this expedition team?"
Lao Qi gritted his teeth and said: "It's all because of this guy; she misled us. We always thought Lin Ruoqiao was the reincarnated bloodline descendant. When we sent A Ling to their hometown to find her, A Ling mistook someone else for her and ended up bringing Lin Ruoqiao into the mountains. No wonder our meticulously planned operation failed; it turns out we brought a fake in!"
Li Hao immediately became unhappy: "Be careful, what nonsense are you talking about? You guys have bad intentions and still think of yourselves as good people. Be honest and don't move around recklessly!"
Lao Qi, feeling angry, squatted down and refused to speak any further. Bai Yujing set Xu Lei down and saw Xu Lei start to cough repeatedly; she had almost choked when Bai Yujing was holding her.
"I’m telling you, treating minors like this is illegal..."
Bai Yujing originally wanted to ask something else, but at that moment, she suddenly heard a sound and her ears perked up. She quickly kicked out the campfire in front of her and looked into the distance. Bai Yujing immediately noticed a faint light appearing far away, seemingly approaching them little by little.
Li Hao, holding a gun, followed behind Bai Yujing: "What's going on? What is it this time?"
Bai Yujing shook her head: "I’m not sure yet, but it’s coming toward us. Be careful and don’t alert them!"
Bai Yujing lowered her gun that was pointed at Lao Qi and Zhong Qiang, speaking softly: "Now that we’ve cleared the air, let me say a few things. Li Hao and I came into the mountains to rescue someone. As long as we save Lin Ruoqiao, your motives have nothing to do with us. So let’s stop scheming against each other; we all need to go up the mountain to find someone. At this moment, we should work together, don’t you think?"
Zhong Qiang immediately nodded: "That's right! Everyone should be like this. Lao Qi, don’t you agree?"
Lao Qi snorted, clearly displeased with the actions of Bai Yujing and Li Hao earlier. Zhong Qiang, the tall man, didn’t seem to mind much, but Lao Qi was quite temperamental.
After covering any traces that might expose them, Bai Yujing and the others hid in the bushes, carefully watching the movements on the mountain. The dark mountain appeared tranquil and mysterious under the moonlight.
That faint light stood out starkly in the darkness, flickering and constantly shifting between the trees, accompanied by some mysterious sounds and rhythms that felt almost like chanting.
"Will-o'-the-wisp?" Li Hao lay on the ground and said to Bai Yujing: "This thing flickers just like what my grandfather used to tell me about will-o'-the-wisps when I was a child!"
Bai Yujing glared at Li Hao and said, "Be quiet, don't speak!"
As the firelight gradually approached, Bai Yujing immediately realized that there was more than one of these things. As they got closer, what emerged from the mountain were bright lights, one lantern after another. Everyone's mouths dropped open, unable to figure out what these things were. However, Bai Yujing suddenly recalled the scene from the photo he had seen before.
As they drew nearer, the entities moved in groups towards Shanxia. Finally, everyone could see what the firelight actually was; it turned out to be lanterns carried by a large group of figures draped in long robes, their hoods covering their heads as they descended towards Shanxia in an orderly formation, moving in unison as if performing some mysterious ritual.
A long line of these figures walked along the mountain path through the forest, with a row of lights stretching down from the mountaintop. Their footsteps were astonishingly synchronized, as if they carried some mysterious rhythm. From beneath their completely hooded faces came strange murmurs, a buzzing sound that made people feel a bit dizzy.
As these figures got closer, Bai Yujing could see them up close. They held a Bronze Lantern in their hands, which looked heavy enough that even an average adult might struggle to hold it with one hand. Inside the Bronze Lantern burned a Crimson Firelight, and a thick furry beast claw tightly gripped the copper pole. Under the flickering light, rows of bizarre shadows danced among the trees, creating an utterly terrifying scene.
Everyone present quickly held their breath, fearing that even the slightest movement would disturb these mysterious beings that resembled evil spirits. These figures were tall and hunched over, their giant claws tiptoeing forward in a strange posture, one after another, holding their lanterns high and low. In the firelight, they stepped forward with the same leg simultaneously, moving in perfect unison as if performing some kind of dance.
These figures continued to advance one after another, at least hundreds lined up as they passed in front of Bai Yujing and others, winding around the mountain path and disappearing into the distant forest.
