Bai Yujing felt a sense of unease deep in his heart as he walked towards the hillside. The closer he got to the Fire-Red Paulownia Tree, the more he sensed its extraordinary nature. It wasn't until he stood at the foot of the tree that he could truly appreciate its uniqueness.
The fiery red trunk resembled red jade, with intricate veins winding up through the main trunk and all its branches. The massive Phoenix Tree towered several dozen meters high, its red leaves resembling burning flames, so beautiful that it was hard to look away.
"Ugh!"
The sudden howl of wolves made Bai Yujing and the others retract their gazes from the divine tree and immediately look towards the foot of the mountain. Bai Yujing saw a large group of black shadows rushing towards them from the distant forest, moving as fast as lightning, targeting Bai Yujing and his companions.
Bai Yujing shouted, "It's a wolf pack! Everyone get ready!"
He quickly pulled an automatic rifle from his backpack and tossed his previously used handgun to Li Hao. After catching the handgun, Li Hao immediately assumed a shooting stance and looked at Bai Yujing, "You brought another one of these? Damn, how did you fit it in there?"
Although Bai Yujing's backpack was large, it contained many items, and Li Hao hadn't expected him to stuff this in as well. Bai Yujing replied irritably, "Why do you care about that? Just get ready for battle!"
Lao Qi and Zhong Qiang glanced at Bai Yujing's automatic rifle and felt much more at ease. After all, with such a large wolf pack, they would definitely be doomed without some heavy firepower. They were less concerned about how Bai Yujing managed to bring it along. Lao Qi took out a shotgun, while Zhong Qiang retrieved his Beretta 92FS. Everyone was on high alert.
Bai Yujing assessed the approaching wolf pack and estimated there were at least forty or more. Lao Qi, being an experienced hunter, knew how powerful a wolf pack could be once they reached such numbers and coordinated their attacks. Many ancient tactics and formations were derived from the attack patterns of wolves.
"With so many of them, we're finished! This time we might be in serious trouble!" Lao Qi's hand holding the shotgun began to sweat.
Zhong Qiang immediately suggested, "Let's fall back and take cover by this Phoenix Tree. We can't let them surround us."
Bai Yujing pulled Xu Lei back and handed him the straight knife he had been using comfortably before. "Take this and stay close to me. Don't move around too much; if things get too intense, I might not be able to look after you. You won't know how to use a gun anyway; a knife is more practical!"
Bai Yujing then took out a bayonet and affixed it to his rifle. He watched as the wolf pack drew closer, their synchronized footsteps echoing as they charged up the slope towards Bai Yujing and his companions.
"Wait, don't rush. I said to shoot together when I say 'fire'!"
"Ready, fire!"
Bai Yujing shouted angrily, and immediately the four of them leaned against the Phoenix Tree. In the darkness, wolves pounced one after another, their gaping mouths dripping with saliva, as if they were starving and ready to swallow Bai Yujing and his companions whole.
Bai Yujing raised his gun and calmly fired the first shot. Instantly, he saw a Gray Wolf running at the front get shot in the head; the bullet passed through its forehead and exited through the back of its skull, creating a large hole. Blood gushed out as it lay on the ground, whimpering twice before dying.
With Bai Yujing's gunfire, it was as if a command had been given. Lao Qi, Zhong Qiang, and Li Hao also began shooting outward. Li Hao was just shooting randomly and didn't hit anything, while Zhong Qiang did quite well, managing to kill several wolves. One even pounced right in front of him, but Zhong Qiang calmly shot it dead.
What surprised Bai Yujing the most was Lao Qi. This guy looked unremarkable with a hunchback, but his shooting skills were very seasoned. With his shotgun in hand, he took down one wolf after another, resembling a sharpshooter with perfect accuracy.
However, reloading the shotgun was quite troublesome. More often than not, Bai Yujing had to cover for him. Whenever a wolf charged forward, Bai Yujing would quickly turn his gun and shoot down the leading wolf. By the time the first wave of wolves charged in, over ten had already been killed before they could reach Bai Yujing and his group.
Despite such heavy casualties, it did not deter the wolves' assault. These creatures eagerly rushed toward Bai Yujing and his companions. Once they got close enough, firearms became less effective. Bai Yujing smashed one charging black wolf to the ground and immediately shot it dead with two shots but didn't expect another wolf to charge at him.
Fortunately, following Zhong Qiang's suggestion to lean against this big tree prevented them from being flanked from both sides. Otherwise, they would have been doomed. Even now, Bai Yujing and his companions were in a precarious situation; while their firearms were effective at long range, their disadvantages became apparent when faced with close combat.
Wolves came one after another like waves from the sea, threatening to overwhelm Bai Yujing's small group. Bai Yujing wielded his gun skillfully, stabbing two hungry wolves that lunged at him before leaping up to deliver a powerful strike that severed half of a wild wolf's head that was attacking Xu Lei. Blood splattered everywhere, startling the young girl into a high-pitched scream.
Bai Yujing then fired two more shots, turning a black wolf that got too close into a sieve. Even after dying from its massive force of impact, it still lunged toward Bai Yujing due to its inertia. He kicked it down to the ground; by this point, there were already numerous wolf corpses lying in front of him. Seeing Bai Yujing's ferocity made the attacking wolves hesitate.
More wolves turned their attention to the others in the group. These wolves were clever; they knew that Bai Yujing was tough prey and decided to eliminate the others first before teaming up to take him down.
Sure enough, Li Hao and the others were thrown into chaos under the pack's assault and could not hold their defense. Bai Yujing immediately saw Li Hao being bitten on the arm by one hungry wolf while another took advantage of an opening to bite Li Hao's left leg, trying to drag him away for a feast among the pack.
Li Hao screamed in fear, "Old Bai, Old Bai, save me!"
Bai Yujing immediately rushed forward, first firing a barrage at the ground. He quickly saw the pack of wolves halt their advance. Bai Yujing kicked the wolf that was biting Li Hao's left leg in the waist with tremendous force, instantly deforming the wolf's spine. Another wolf that had bitten Li Hao's arm charged in, but was pinned to the ground by Bai Yujing's knife.
At this moment, Bai Yujing was completely held back. The pack of wolves would not miss this opportunity; taking advantage of the distraction, they aimed to take Bai Yujing's life. With a single command, all the wolves lunged at him, leaping high into the air.
Bai Yujing could not turn his gun around in time but quickly pulled a grenade from his pocket and threw it. He pressed Li Hao down to the ground and managed to shout one word.
"Down!"
"Boom!"
The violent explosion kicked up a massive cloud of dust and debris, creating a thick fog. The wolves did not expect such a turn of events; despite their efforts, they still had not taken down Bai Yujing.
"Cough cough cough!" At this moment, both Bai Yujing and Li Hao crawled up from the pile of rubble, raising their heads to see not wolf fangs but a pair of beautiful fiery red eyes.
Bai Yujing then noticed a magnificent bird perched on the Phoenix Tree, spreading its wings. Its fiery red wings and colorful tail feathers extended outwards, about ten meters away, with claws as sharp as steel glinting ominously—capable of hunting any creature on the ground.
"Chirp!"
With an angry shriek, the enormous Firebird swooped down from the towering Phoenix Tree, stirring up a whirlwind and charging towards those who had disturbed its rest below.
