In the Pitch-Black Cabin, several people were tied up like zongzi. When the door was pushed open, the silence in the room was so profound that one could hear a pin drop. Everyone huddled together, motionless, like dead fish, terrified that the presence entering would notice them.
A few hunched figures with sharp features and white fur resembling monkeys entered. They picked up one person and dragged them out, making squeaking and chattering sounds as if selecting two large pieces of meat. Grabbing an adult with one hand was effortless for their tall frames and sharp claws.
The two chosen individuals screamed in terror, tears and snot streaming down their faces: "Help me! Help me! I don't want to die! Why did you choose me? Choose them instead!"
"You guys won't last long either; it's your turn next, your turn next."
"You beasts..."
As the door closed, darkness enveloped the room once more. Lin Ruoqiao hid in a corner, her small face dirty. Her once pretty features were now grimy from days without washing, her hair messy like a beggar's.
"It's over, it's over! We're doomed this time!"
Lin Ruoqiao counted the people left in the room; besides her, there were only two others remaining. The others had been taken out one by one over the past few days and never returned: "They must have been turned into Human Meat Buns!"
A woman nearby shot her a glare: "You're so talkative. If it weren't for you, would we have ended up like this?"
Lin Ruoqiao immediately retorted angrily: "What did you say? If it weren't for you tricking me into coming here, I'd still be out there living it up! I had everything—every day surrounded by my gang, strutting around like a boss, eating whatever I wanted. Now I'm stuck here eating rotten pears that make my stomach churn!"
At this point, Lin Ruoqiao was heartbroken: "I want to eat braised pork! I want sweet and sour ribs!"
The girl beside her rolled her eyes: "You're about to become someone else's meat!"
Lin Ruoqiao lifted her head again, and the two entered another round of bickering. As the second day arrived, the last remaining person was also dragged out, leaving only the two of them in the small dark room.
This time, neither of them had the desire to argue anymore because they knew it would be their turn next.
"Dad, big brother, and that damned Bai Yujing, I don't want to die! I haven't had enough fun yet!"
"At this point, what else can we do? Don't worry, tomorrow I will let them eat me first, so you can live another day!"
"If I'm just waiting to die here alone, isn't that even scarier? I'd rather they eat me first!"
"Eat me first!"
"Eat me first!"
-------------------------
Bai Yujing took out a small telescope and leaned against a tree on the mountain to look down. Faintly, he could see a village below. In addition, Bai Yujing also heard a lot of movement; judging by the figures in long robes, this should be the lair of the Mountain Spirit.
Bai Yujing took a photo out of his backpack and compared it with what he saw below, nodding his head. He then jumped down from the tree. Li Hao immediately asked, "What did you see?"
Bai Yujing replied, "This is it! The lair of the Mountain Spirit is right ahead!"
Zhong Qiang felt somewhat dejected and was not in good spirits. He had been friends with Lao Qi for many years, and yesterday Lao Qi died in the flames of that phoenix, leaving Zhong Qiang feeling guilty towards Lao Qi and his children.
"People still need to live on; we will always find a way to get out of here. Xu Lei told me something before he left that gave me a clue about how to escape!"
Upon mentioning leaving this place, Zhong Qiang's eyes lit up. At this point, he no longer had any thoughts of searching for ancient divine clans. The Mountain Spirit had become an obsession for him; now that he had found it and seen it, what mattered more was wanting to survive and leave this place. After all, no matter how impressive what he found was, it wouldn't matter if he didn't have his life!
Li Hao immediately said, "We need to find Lin Ruo Qiao first before we can leave!"
Bai Yujing nodded: "I know. Can I afford to make another trip for nothing? Xu Lei mentioned that this fog is called Chi Mist, originating from the ancient Jiu Li Tribe and Chiyou Clan. Back then, Huangdi used the Guiding Cart to dispel this strange fog and defeat the Chiyou Clan."
Zhong Qiang frowned: "Guiding Cart? But the compass we have is completely useless!"
Bai Yujing shook his finger: "The Guiding Cart is just a term referring to something. According to Xu Lei, these Mountain Spirits can freely traverse through this Chi Mist; they likely have something that works similarly to the emperor's Guiding Cart. As long as we obtain it, we can escape this strange fog and successfully leave here!"
Bai Yujing pointed to the village at the foot of the mountain and said, "So we need to go deeper into there. Mountain Spirit is a creature with a poor sense of smell but sharp hearing. It is incredibly strong and fast enough to tear apart tigers and leopards. It can also control wild beasts, so we definitely can't confront them directly, nor can we outrun them!"
Li Hao immediately asked, "Do you have any strategies or preparations? From what you’re saying, going in there is like lambs to the slaughter?"
Bai Yujing shook his head. "Mountain Spirit is powerful, but it is not invincible. Their poor sense of smell gives us an opportunity to sneak in. As long as we are careful and avoid making noise, they will have a hard time detecting our presence. Their acute hearing is both their strength and their weakness. I have three Sonic Bombs. If we throw them, even ordinary people can be stunned; these creatures will definitely be affected even more!"
Bai Yujing divided the bombs: "Each of us will take one. If something goes wrong, we need to assess the situation and not throw them around carelessly. There are only three; once we use them up, we won't have any left!"
Li Hao held the Sonic Bomb in his hand and asked Bai Yujing how to use it before attaching it to his waist. "Let’s check our ammunition; we’ll set off immediately. Before we go, let’s do some preparations!"
Before long, they saw three figures dressed in grass clothes and skirts, wearing grass hats, emerging from the jungle. They followed a narrow path toward the Village.
The Village appeared quite large, capable of accommodating thousands of people. In the distance, there were cultivated fields on the mountainside. These Mountain Spirits seemed to live here like humans, exhibiting a rudimentary level of civilization and intelligence that was truly astonishing.
"There's actually a guard!"
As soon as Li Hao spoke, Bai Yujing quickly covered his mouth. They saw a Mountain Spirit kneeling at the entrance of the Village, praying toward the setting sun. It looked over in their direction, stood up, and walked toward them. The three immediately held their breath.
This Mountain Spirit had a sharp face and was dressed in coarse hemp fabric. To be honest, it resembled a monkey wearing a crown. It chirped a couple of times but didn’t notice anything unusual before turning away.
At this moment, Bai Yujing lifted his head from a patch of green grass and looked at Li Hao. "From now on, you’re not allowed to speak without my permission!"
