Listening to Bai Yujing and the others discussing how to leave, A Ling, who was devouring food nearby, immediately suggested to Bai Yujing based on what he had seen before.
"Those Mountain Spirits' lanterns are quite strange. When held at night, even the ghosts dare not approach, and no wild beasts would attack them. During the day, they can disperse the surrounding fog and help find the right direction without being misled by the illusions and phantoms within the mist!"
Zhong Qiang immediately said, "Isn't this what you mentioned before, Bai Yujing? The Mountain Spirits have something that allows them to move freely in the fog? Seeing Zhong Qiang's regretful expression, Bai Yujing shook his head. "We didn't see that kind of Bronze Lantern when we were in the mountain stronghold. The lanterns hanging outside were all ordinary items, not what we needed. The Mountain Spirits we encountered were in groups of hundreds; trying to snatch their lanterns would be tantamount to seeking death!"
Zhong Qiang nodded. "It seems we'll have to think of another way. We five came in, and Lao Qi and Xu Lei are stuck here now. I hope we can get out safely; we've really fallen for that guy's trick this time."
As Zhong Qiang spoke, Lin Ruoqiao, who was eating heartily, perked up her ears. "Xu Lei? Which Xu Lei are you talking about?"

Bai Yujing waved his hand immediately. "I won't take the blame for this! I didn't bring her into the mountains; she sneaked in on her own! We only encountered her days after entering the mountains in the core area of Shennongjia. Besides, wasn't that when we ran into the Phoenix? That thing's power made you realize what an ancient fierce bird is like! You didn't see how it set everything ablaze; Lao Qi, who came with us into the mountains, was left as nothing but ashes! At that time, a pack of hungry wolves was eyeing us; your brother almost died! How could we worry about so much then?"
"It’s all your fault! Xu Lei is my best friend. Why did you bring her to such a dangerous place?" Lin Ruoqiao fumed, looking as if she wanted to claw at Bai Yujing.
Bai Yujing immediately replied, "Oh please, you have no right to say that. If we hadn't come here, would you still be alive and kicking? If it weren't for the trouble you caused, would I and your brother have come all the way here? Right now, we could be enjoying ourselves at a party in our own home!"
Lin Ruoqiao shouted in frustration, her eyes wide as she stared at Bai Yujing. "Aren't you also taking risks everywhere? There are places much more dangerous than this where you often sneak around!"
Bai Yujing retorted, "I’m awesome! I can go in and come out alive. Can you? I’ve never caused trouble for anyone!"
Lin Ruoqiao turned her head away, muttering, "I didn’t ask you to come save me!"
Angrily, Lin Ruoqiao sat down on one side while Bai Yujing chose to ignore her. It wasn't that he didn't want to help, but at this moment, what could he use to save her? Who had taken Xu Lei, where was she now, and whether she was alive or dead were all unclear. This place was fraught with danger; he wasn't even sure if he could escape himself, let alone worry about anything else.
Li Hao also didn't comfort Lin Ruoqiao. Her behavior this time had annoyed him as well. Noticing the atmosphere had grown tense, Li Hao quickly said, "You mentioned the Mountain Spirit’s Bronze Lantern. Even during the day when the fog is thick, it can freely navigate through the mountains and find the right direction. Do you think they might come looking for us? Bai Yujing stared blankly at Li Hao, his ears perked up as he suddenly stood up and looked toward the jungle shrouded in mist. Li Hao also reacted and glanced back. "No way!"
Bai Yujing looked at Li Hao, saying, "Shut up from now on; you're such a jinx!"
With a loud shout, Bai Yujing yelled, "Everyone get ready for battle! Li Hao, what are you and Zhong Qiang still doing? Get your guns out!"
He quickly pulled out two handguns from his backpack and tossed them to Lin Ruoqiao and A Ling. "So, can you use these?"
A Ling expertly clicked off the safety and chambered a round. "Of course!"
Lin Ruoqiao seemed familiar, but it felt like she had never touched the real thing. After looking at it a couple of times, she imitated A Ling's stance and held the gun with both hands!
At that moment, a hurried running sound and a low growl like that of a wild dog came from the mist. Bai Yujing raised the muzzle of his automatic rifle, focusing intently ahead.
Then, two fierce beasts charged out of the fog, leaping towards Bai Yujing and the others who were on high alert. Without saying a word, Bai Yujing immediately fired two shots, hitting the charging creature mid-air, causing it to fall to the ground. It was a Donkey-headed Wolf.
Following closely behind, another one emerged and was instantly shot down by Zhong Qiang and A Ling. With the death of the two Donkey-headed Wolves, the air immediately became quiet. The tension and excitement that had just been stirred among the group quickly dissipated as they realized there were no more coming from behind.
Li Hao immediately said, "No way? Is that it?"
Bai Yujing shook his head: "No, that's not right. It can't end like this. These are just beasts; what’s chasing us must be the Mountain Spirit. The Mountain Spirit hasn’t shown up yet!"
Sure enough, as soon as Bai Yujing finished speaking, a Mountain Spirit, draped in coarse burlap and towering even taller than Bai Yujing, suddenly charged out from behind. It reached for Bai Yujing's head; if that claw landed solidly, Bai Yujing would likely have his skull split open by this monster!
However, Bai Yujing sensed the danger immediately and ducked down. The creature then seized Bai Yujing's backpack and forcefully dragged him backward, putting him in a precarious situation!
