"Crash!"
"Crash!"
A huge sound erupted, resembling the noise of some iron lock twisting, as heavy and entangled chains were pulled by immense force, creating a clattering sound. By the lake, near the waterfall, Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun, who were fiddling with instruments, immediately looked up.
"What is that sound?"
"It seems to be coming from the bottom of the lake?"
The noise grew increasingly urgent, and both Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun felt something was off. They quickly stood up; at that moment, they were deep into the lake area, not far from the waterfall. Bai Yujing had chosen this spot for its proximity to better observe the situation at the waterfall.
However, upon discovering the unusual situation, Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun realized that it wouldn't be easy to retreat. To leave the lake area, they would have to run quite a distance.
Listening to the sound, Bai Yujing hesitated for a moment before shouting, "We need to hurry and get out of here!"
"Boom!"
But it was already too late. With a loud bang, Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun saw the lake surface explode instantly, sending water splashing up over ten meters high. The massive spray cascaded down like torrential rain in the cave, drenching both Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun.
At that moment, however, neither of them cared about being soaked. What emerged with the loud noise was a large group of giant serpents raising their heads, their pairs of crimson eyes fixated on Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun, as if staring at long-lost enemies.
"Roar!"
A chorus of fierce hissing echoed throughout the cave. The intense noise made the entire cave seem to shake as if an earthquake had struck. In Bai Yujing's mind, he immediately heard the long-lost voice of the Exotic Creature Hunter System.
"Detected C-Rank Anomalous Creature Nine-Headed Serpent. The biological template for Nine-Headed Serpent has been added to the encyclopedia. Reward: 200 points!"
Bai Yujing looked at the creature with nine snake heads towering above them; its massive body nearly touched the cave's ceiling. Such a size was reminiscent of beings from mythology, having crossed time from ancient eras to appear before Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun.
"Run!"
With a loud shout from Bai Yujing, the two immediately turned and ran. In the blink of an eye, they saw the snake head in the middle move. It twisted like a massive train engine, and then they saw scorching red flames shooting out from the giant serpent's mouth, melting the Drone and computer that Bai Yujing had left behind into a puddle of scrap metal.
The movement of the central snake head seemed to act as a signal, and instantly all nine heads sprang into action, attacking together towards Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun. The two had completely attracted the Nine-Headed Serpent's hatred. This creature seemed to have a deep-seated animosity towards humanoid beings, as if it were imprinted in its mind and memories. Upon spotting Bai Yujing and the others, it activated some ancient memory and immediately attacked without hesitation.
The nine snake heads spewed fire, water, and venom, overwhelming Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun with a barrage of attacks that seemed capable of destroying everything. However, both Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun possessed physical qualities and agility far beyond ordinary humans. In this situation, they were able to quickly evade and dodge the attacks, skillfully avoiding the giant serpents' strikes.
These giant snakes had not moved for many years, and their massive size greatly reduced their agility. Their aim was poor; they sprayed wildly at Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun without hitting them at all.
However, escaping from this place was still a long way off for Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun. The giant serpent swiftly swam through the water and blocked their path completely. With such overwhelming attacks raining down on them, it was only a matter of time before Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun would become victims of its jaws.
"Should we turn off the spotlight?"
"No! This monster has better night vision than we do. Without light, it can still see us. If we lose our light, we’ll be blind—there’s no way out!"
Sure enough, the monster's nine heads became familiar with their movements and began to predict Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun's actions. Zhou Jun was almost caught by a blast of searing flames when one of the giant serpent's heads lunged at him. Bai Yujing quickly grabbed Zhou Jun by his shirt and pulled him back just in time to avoid a fatal strike from the creature.
At that moment, both were in dire straits, resembling lost dogs as they were pounded into the ground by the Nine-Headed Serpent like a game of whack-a-mole. The creature's enormous size and innate abilities made it seem like a god or demon incarnate.
"This is impossible! We can't break through!"
Zhou Jun was also in despair. Although it had been less than a minute since the monster emerged from the water, both he and Bai Yujing had already fallen into a desperate situation. Their path was blocked; there was no chance for them to charge through—only a dead end awaited them.
Bai Yujing gritted his teeth: "If we can't break through, then we won't! Let's jump down from that waterfall!"
Zhou Jun looked at the raging waterfall and assessed the situation below along with the unknown height: "Where should we jump? We don’t even know what’s down there! Who knows if we’ll just fall to our deaths!"
Bai Yujing shouted immediately: "Either die in this monster's mouth now or take a gamble jumping from the waterfall! Which one do you choose?"
Zhou Jun also steeled himself: "Damn it! If we're jumping, then let's jump!"
The two individuals swiftly sprang into action, abandoning their escape from the encirclement of the Nine-Headed Serpent and turning towards the waterfall. Their sudden change in direction caught the Nine-Headed Serpent off guard, preventing it from reacting in time.
Seeing that the little bugs it had toyed with were attempting to flee in another direction, the Nine-Headed Serpent became furious. All nine heads began to thrash about as it pulled its massive chains and chased after Bai Yujing and the others.
Bai Yujing turned back to see the enormous chains coiling around the underwater body of the Nine-Headed Serpent. The bronze chains were adorned with mysterious patterns, very similar to the Bronze Tripod that Bai Yujing had obtained earlier.
"This monster was captured by Bai Wang to guard the entrance to Bai Wang's Tomb. It's been locked up, and as long as we jump down the waterfall, it definitely won't be able to catch us!"
"Run quickly, don't stop for a moment! That monster is closing in on us; it's faster than we are!"
Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun sprinted along the riverbank and plunged into the rushing waters ahead, diving down towards the base of the waterfall. The swift current carried them along without requiring any effort from either of them as they were swept downward.
At that moment, the nine heads of the Nine-Headed Serpent lunged at Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun with frenzied aggression, as if they bore a deep grudge against them. The immense force tugged at the bronze chains, creating a cacophony of clanking metal.
"Roar!"
Intense flames erupted from three of its heads simultaneously, while venom sprayed across the water's surface, illuminating the entire cave as bright as day. The fiery light filled the air, and Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun held their breath, submerging themselves underwater and extinguishing their headlamps as they were swept down with the waterfall.
The Nine-Headed Serpent vented its fury above the waterfall, its nine heads twisting outside the massive cave entrance. Beneath it was a torrent of rushing water from the enormous waterfall, yet its body was tightly restrained by bronze chains, preventing it from leaving the lake.
Meanwhile, Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun were carried down by the turbulent waters, disappearing into the darkness of the waterfall without a trace.
