"No way, it's all rotten!"
"Let's take a look further ahead!"
The two of them bent over, sifting through the ruins. Occasionally, they encountered a giant rat, and Bai Yujing immediately took out his dagger to pin it down and stab it to death. Stumbling along, they were quite far from the big ship, so thankfully they didn't attract any trouble.
"Look over there, it seems like there's a decent one," Zhou Jun said, pointing at a shadow in the distance.
Bai Yujing glanced over. "Let's go check it out. It's a bit close to the giant rat's nest, so we need to be careful. Take out your gun, but let's try to solve things with the dagger as much as possible; the noise from the gun is too loud and could easily startle them!"
Bai Yujing approached cautiously, and the two of them walked along the wall, sneaking around. There were quite a few giant rats resting nearby, but there were even more closer to the riverbank—everywhere you looked, they were either foraging or bathing. These Water Rats loved the damp environment near the riverbank and the big ship.
As Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun got closer, they indeed found a Boat near the riverbank. It was made of wood, lying on the ground and coated with a layer of Tung Oil. This boat was constructed from Hardwood; it looked heavy and sturdy, large enough for both Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun to use. Bai Yujing inspected it. "It should be fine, but we'll need to test it in the water to be sure. What if it leaks?"
Zhou Jun was eager to try it out. "This is the only one that looks intact. Let's lift it over first; if we go back and come again, it'll take several days!"
Bai Yujing looked around. "Where are the oars? How are we supposed to paddle across?"
Zhou Jun pried off two wooden planks from another side. "Let's use these for now; we can bring a few more just in case!"
The wooden boat was heavy; they lifted it one after the other and felt its weight. "Let's head right where we can launch it!"
Carrying the wooden boat carefully, they hunched over and moved quietly, not daring to make a sound. It felt just like two little monsters from Journey to the West carrying the sedan chair of a nine-tailed fox.
Bai Yujing had more strength and was walking behind, able to support the load. Zhou Jun was holding up the front with both hands when he suddenly stopped. Bai Yujing immediately felt unsteady on his feet. "What's going on? Why did you stop?"
Zhou Jun didn't respond. At that moment, Bai Yujing looked ahead and saw eight or nine giant rats appearing in front of Zhou Jun. The giant rats stood upright, nearly one and a half meters tall, with massive weight and thick fur, completely different from the skinny ones Bai Yujing had encountered earlier.
The eight or nine giant rats varied in size, all staring blankly at Zhou Jun. Faced with these towering rats, Zhou Jun momentarily lost his voice. Both Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun wanted to bypass them but unexpectedly stumbled upon a family of unruly rats that had invaded their territory.
As soon as Bai Yujing spoke, the rats immediately began to squeak loudly and charged crazily towards Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun.
"Bang!"
Both of them dropped the boat and pulled out their guns, aiming at the approaching rats. Instantly, several rats were shot dead on the spot. The remaining smaller ones attempted to retreat, but Zhou Jun and Bai Yujing did not let them escape, shooting them down one by one.
If these rats had scattered, given their speed, it would have taken considerable effort for Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun to hit them. However, since they were charging straight at them, there was no need for prediction; they just needed to aim and shoot, quickly taking down the terrifying horde of rats.
However, after firing the guns, the sound of gunfire echoed throughout the cave, and the flashes of light were extremely eye-catching in the darkness. Suddenly, the entire underground area seemed to boil over. Bai Yujing saw that on the other side of the large boat, enormous trees surged forth like a tidal wave, while groups of rats from the river rushed onto the shore, howling as they gathered towards Bai Yujing.
This scene resembled an army of thousands; countless crimson eyes lit up in the darkness, appearing like swarms of fireflies in the sky, rushing towards Bai Yujing with a bloodthirsty gaze.
Zhou Jun, having never witnessed such a spectacle before, became somewhat panicked. With so many rats coming towards them, they were surely doomed. "What do we do? We shouldn't have fired! We're finished!"
Bai Yujing immediately said, "Lift the boat and hurry towards the riverbank!"
Zhou Jun replied urgently, "There's no time!"
Bai Yujing shouted angrily, "Stop wasting time and hurry up!"
The two immediately lifted the boat and rushed toward the riverbank. However, at that moment, giant rats surged toward them from the side like a tidal wave. As they ran at high speed, it felt as if the ground was shaking, and splashes of water erupted from the surface.
The giant rats formed a semicircle, surrounding Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun. While Zhou Jun and Bai Yujing carried the boat, they dashed toward a corner of the riverbank. However, it seemed unlikely they would reach the shore before being caught by the swarm of giant rats.
The giant rats seemed to sense that these two had become their next meal, and those in front picked up their pace even more. The ones behind were impatient, watching as Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun were about to be overwhelmed by the horde, leaving nothing but bones behind.
At that moment, Bai Yujing shouted to Zhou Jun, "Close your eyes and don't stop for a second! Keep running forward!"
"Ah!"
Bai Yujing then put one hand down, dragging the heavy wooden boat with one hand. Veins bulged on his forehead as he pulled out a grenade from a pocket in his backpack with his other hand. He bit down on it, struck it hard against the boat, and threw it away before closing his eyes and following Zhou Jun as they continued to run.
At that moment, the encroaching swarm of rats had not yet realized what was happening when a dazzling white light suddenly shone in front of them. These creatures, who lived underground and rarely saw light, instantly stopped and emitted piercing cries.
The light blinded all the rats in front of them, causing them to lose their strength and collapse to the ground, incapacitated. The giant rats following behind saw this situation and scattered in all directions; the overwhelming momentum of the rat horde disintegrated in an instant.
Bai Yujing and Zhou Jun then plunged into the river with their eyes still closed while carrying the boat. Only after they entered the water did they open their eyes and climb onto the boat. Zhou Jun looked back at the situation behind them in surprise and exclaimed, "We actually made it out alive? Was that a flashbang?"
