After Mu Junqi left, Consort Qian slowly stood up and weakly said, "Your Majesty, what has Consort done wrong? Do you no longer love Consort?"
Mo Xiao Li was unwilling to say much. He called Li Fusheng over and whispered a few words, then ignored her and turned to leave. Consort Qian watched the departing emperor with narrowed eyes, filled with resentment, thinking: Today you protect her, but in the future, you will have to kill her with your own hands.
At this moment, Mu Junqi was simply walking slowly along the path. The palace servants she encountered all looked at her with trembling fear. Mur followed closely behind and softly said, "Your Highness, since there is nothing wrong, let’s go back. It’s freezing out here; what if you catch a cold?"
Mu Junqi only smiled lightly and then murmured, "If I fall ill, does that mean I can see him every day?"
Mur's expression changed drastically. She gently tugged at Mu Junqi's sleeve and anxiously said, "Your Highness, you are now the Empress. Some things should be forgotten and cannot be remembered anymore."
Mu Junqi was unwilling to respond and only gave a self-deprecating smile. At that moment, a voice came from behind them. It was Li Fusheng, who said, "Empress, auspicious greetings. His Majesty wishes for you to take a walk in the Imperial Garden." After speaking, he gestured for her to walk in that direction.
With a soft cold laugh, she turned and followed Li Fusheng forward. Before long, they arrived at the Imperial Garden. As soon as they got there, she saw Mo Xiao Li standing with his hands behind his back. His tall figure and chiseled features radiated an aura of a king who could shake the world; his evil yet handsome face wore a carefree smile.
As she walked closer, Mo Xiao Li turned around to look at her. " Empress, do you know why I summoned you today?"
Mu Junqi merely smiled coldly and performed a bow, saying, "Your Majesty's auspicious greetings. Forgive Consort for being dull; I do not know what this is about."
After she spoke, Mo Xiao Li took a few steps closer and fixed his gaze on her as he said, "Empress, do you still remember the poisoning incident from a few days ago? I have found out who was responsible."
Mu Junqi clearly paused in surprise and slightly bowed again before continuing, "That nearly cost Consort her life; of course I remember. Could it be that the culprit is someone close to Consort?"
Mo Xiao Li nodded gently. "Indeed, it was your sister Mu Yueqing. However, for your sake, I summoned you today to ask whether you want me to continue investigating this matter since she is your sister."
Mu Junqi smiled self-deprecatingly and said, "Is there anyone in the world who would assassinate their own sister? Since she is unkind, do not blame me for being unjust. The Emperor can handle it. If there is nothing else, I will take my leave." After saying this, she pretended to leave.
"Do you really not wish to be with me?" Mo Xiao Li suddenly spoke from behind. Mu Junqi couldn't tell if it was her imagination, but she felt a hint of resentment in his tone. When she looked up, she could only sense his natural aura of authority and the sharp depth in his gaze, which unconsciously created a feeling of pressure.
She chuckled lightly and then slightly bowed, appearing nonchalant yet respectful as she said, "Your Majesty thinks too much. I have no such intention; it’s just that my health is not well, and I feel a bit cold."
As soon as she finished speaking, Mo Xiao Li reached out to loosen his cloak and draped it over Mu Junqi in front of everyone. He then said, "It is I who did not consider your feelings. But since you entered the palace, do you still harbor resentment towards me?"
At that moment, Mu Junqi was still in shock, standing there like a wooden chicken, staring at Mo Xiao Li, unable to comprehend what he had said or why he would do such a thing.
Mo Xiao Li repeated himself, and only then did Mu Junqi come to her senses. Lowering her head, she replied, "Your Majesty is truly overthinking. Since entering the palace, I have already become yours; how could I resent you?"
Unexpectedly, Mo Xiao Li threw back his head and laughed heartily. He stepped closer to her and lifted her chin with his hand. "Even if today’s words are lies, I will believe you. However, since you are already mine, you must understand what should be done and what should not."
"Consort is dull-witted and does not understand what Your Majesty means."
"Forget it; let’s not discuss this matter. Don't you want to know why I chose to marry you?" Mo Xiao Li asked instead of answering her question, pulling Mu Junqi into his embrace.
Mu Junqi initially wanted to struggle but seeing the eunuchs and palace maids around her, she suppressed her urge and forced a smile as she said, "Your Majesty, I wanted to know at first, but now I no longer wish to know."
"In that case, we can talk about it later. How about tonight with the Empress?" He finished speaking while closely observing Mu Junqi's face.
As soon as he finished speaking, Mu Junqi struggled out of his embrace and looked at him saying, "Your Majesty, my health has not fully recovered yet. If I were to infect you as well, that would be my fault."
Mo Xiao Li unexpectedly smiled instead of getting angry. "Does the Empress think I want you to serve me in bed because..." Before finishing the sentence, Mu Junqi's face turned crimson, and she lowered her head in silence. Mo Xiao Li looked at Mu Junqi's delicate appearance and laughed heartily.
At that moment, Zuo Yunqing appeared before them, kneeling respectfully and saying, "Your Majesty, I have done as you instructed. What should we do next?"
Mo Xiao Li regained his usual cold demeanor and looked at Zuo Yunqing, saying in a deep voice, "There's nothing more. You may leave."
"I have one more thing to report," Zuo Yunqing said without waiting for Mo Xiao Li's response. "Your Majesty, the Empress Dowager will return to the palace in a few days."
Upon hearing this, Mo Xiao Li frowned and pondered for a moment before saying, "In that case, instruct everyone in the palace to prepare. No matter what happens, this matter must take precedence."
"Understood."
After everyone left, Mu Junqi spoke up, "Your Majesty, if there's nothing else, I shall take my leave." As she began to remove her cloak, Mo Xiao Li interrupted her. "You can keep the cloak. It's freezing outside, and your health isn't good. I'll visit Jingxian Palace later." Without waiting for Mu Junqi's reply, he stepped away first.
Mu Junqi watched Mo Xiao Li leave and found herself momentarily at a loss for understanding. Mur timely spoke up, "Your Highness, let's go back." She supported Mu Junqi as they pretended to leave.
Mu Junqi allowed her to assist her. Along the way, Mur tried several times to say something but didn't know how to express it until Mu Junqi said, "If you have something to say, just say it."
"Your Highness, I believe the Emperor must care for you; otherwise, he wouldn't act that way. Shouldn't you treat him a little better?"
Mu Junqi lightly smiled at this but replied, "What difference does it make? My heart is not with him; our being together is a mistake." After saying this, she fell silent and continued walking gloomily ahead while Mur could only quietly follow beside her.
