Tianming Palace
As Tianming Palace came into view, Mu Junqi suddenly felt the scene in front of her becoming blurry. Shaking her head, the accessories in her hair jingled, and leaning against the Phoenix Palanquin, she felt a dull heaviness in her chest that made it hard to breathe.
Huixin and Ziyue, noticing they had arrived at Tianming Palace, did not pay attention to Mu Junqi's unusual state until they heard a faint whimper. Turning around, they saw Mu Junqi weakly leaning against the cushion, beads of sweat dotting her forehead. Startled, the two screamed and hurried over to see what was wrong.
At that moment, Mu Junqi was already losing consciousness. She opened her mouth but could not say anything. A nearby attendant quickly turned and rushed toward the Imperial Medical Office. Just then, a shadowy figure appeared before them. "I have come late to rescue you," he said, handing a black pill to Huixin. "I am a Shadow Guard sent by the Emperor to protect the Empress. This is the Yunxiang Pill. The Empress must have been poisoned; quickly give this to her."
Without suspicion, Huixin approached and helped Mu Junqi take the pill. After a while, she began to regain some awareness. By then, the Shadow Guard had vanished from sight, just as the imperial physician arrived.
Still feeling weak, Mu Junqi leaned on Huixin and Ziyue as they struggled to walk toward Tianming Palace. At that moment, the Palace Eunuch spotted Mu Junqi and hurried over to pay his respects.
"Where is the Emperor?" Huixin asked first.
The eunuch seemed taken aback that a palace maid would speak so rudely to him, but given Mu Junqi's status, he could only respond respectfully: "The Emperor has gone to attend morning court. If the Empress has any matters to discuss, it would be best to wait here; perhaps the Emperor will return shortly."
Normally, under such circumstances, Mu Junqi would wait patiently since it was customary in the palace that no one was allowed into the main hall when the Emperor was absent—even the Empress had to abide by this rule.
However, at this moment, her head was in disarray, and everything in front of her seemed blurred. Although she did not know why this was happening, she realized she lacked the strength to return. Annoyed, she said, "Lead the way! Even if we can't go to the main hall, surely we can go to a side hall!"
The eunuch knelt down awkwardly and said with cupped hands, "Your Majesty, please do not make it difficult for me. There have been too many incidents in the palace recently. The Emperor has ordered that without his command, no one is allowed into Tianming Palace. I hope Your Majesty can understand my position." He bowed his head even lower in humility.
Originally, Mu Junqi did not want to use her status to pressure these people. However, seeing their attitude today made her realize they were truly insufferable; they wouldn't understand their place unless taught a lesson. With that thought in mind, she looked toward Huixin.
Huixin immediately understood and stepped forward to say to the eunuch, “Wang the Eunuch, the Empress is unwell. If you insist on keeping her outside the door, you will be fully responsible for any consequences that may arise.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Ziyue chimed in, “Don’t forget, there is still a prince of Western Yan in the Empress’s womb. If anything were to happen, even if you had three heads and six arms, it would be difficult for you to atone.”
After this statement, if it had been someone else, they might have disregarded everything and let her in. However, Wang the Eunuch remained resolute in not allowing her entry, still blocking the door and respectfully saying, “If the Empress insists on entering, then she must step over Servant’s corpse.”
These words enraged several people, but Mu Junqi was too weak to speak and leaned against Huixin, gasping for breath.
Seeing Mu Junqi’s consciousness gradually fading, the physician beside them anxiously said, “If the Empress does not hurry to treat her, should anything happen, all of us here will be held accountable.”
Ziyue, observing that Wang the Eunuch was trembling but still unwilling to move aside, felt that there must be something more going on. She decided not to persuade him further and sent a palace maid to Yun Jin Palace to find Mo Xiao Li.
By the time Mo Xiao Li arrived, Mu Junqi had already fainted. The physician was anxiously checking her pulse when he saw Wang the Eunuch kneeling on the ground, trembling all over. He kicked him far away and then horizontally lifted Mu Junqi, striding into the bedroom.
Upon entering, he gently placed Mu Junqi on the bed and then turned around to angrily roar, “Why aren’t you coming over to take a look?”
As soon as he finished speaking, several physicians approached cautiously. They covered Mu Junqi’s arm with a silk cloth and then extended their hands to check her pulse. After pondering for a while, one of them clasped his hands together and said, “Your Majesty need not worry. The lady was poisoned by Euphorbia Tigeri, but fortunately, it was not a deep poisoning and she has taken medicine. She will be fine once she wakes up.”
The tension that had been hanging in the air finally eased. He then dismissed them all and instructed Huixin and Ziyue to take good care of Mu Junqi, before leaving with a cold expression.
Li Fusheng had already brought Wang the Eunuch to the main hall, where he was now slumped on the ground. Upon seeing him approach, he immediately knelt and pleaded for mercy, saying, “Your Majesty spare me! Your Majesty spare me! Servant was only following your orders!”
Mo Xiao Li kicked him again with such force that he could not get up for a while. Seeing this, Li Fusheng stepped forward and pulled him up. Only then did Mo Xiao Li say in a deep voice, “You dog of a Servant, how dare you use my words as a shield at this time! No matter what happens, that is the Empress. Fortunately nothing happened today; otherwise you would be meeting Yama now. Honestly tell me who instructed you to do this!”
“Servant It’s unfair, this is all your command, Your Majesty, Servant is just following orders, please spare my life,” Wang the Eunuch cried on the ground, his face streaked with tears.
Li Fusheng looked at him and said, “If you confess honestly, perhaps the Emperor will give you a chance to live. If you say nothing, then you can try the taste of being torn apart by five horses.”
But Wang the Eunuch kept insisting that he was only following the Emperor's arrangements. In the end, Mo Xiao Li had no choice but to order him to be locked up and have his tendons severed before returning to the bedroom.
After dismissing everyone, Mo Xiao Li fixed his gaze on Mu Junqi, feeling that everything stemmed from himself. Perhaps he should never have come to his side; otherwise, he wouldn’t be so battered and bruised.
Lost in thought, Mu Junqi slowly opened his eyes. Seeing Mo Xiao Li, he felt a stir in his heart. For so long, whenever he opened his eyes, he could see him and the deep sense of guilt and concern in his eyes sent a warm current flowing through him.
Sitting up slowly, he looked at Mo Xiao Li and asked in confusion, “Consort... what happened this time?”
After asking, he suddenly recalled what had happened before losing consciousness. He smiled faintly and said, “I’ve caused trouble for the Emperor again.”
“It’s alright; it’s my fault for not being able to protect you well. How are you feeling now? Is your body alright?” Mo Xiao Li said gently while sitting beside him with a smile.
