Leaving the Imperial Garden, Mu Yueqing walked forward angrily. Her originally beautiful face had become somewhat distorted. She never expected that the Empress Dowager would be so disrespectful, disregarding even the General's residence behind her.
Unknowingly, she arrived not far from Qinxiang Garden and saw Mo Xiao Li standing there dejectedly, not knowing what to do. She immediately approached with a bright smile, "Your Majesty, it's a pleasant surprise to see you here."
Mo Xiao Li turned around and saw her. A flash of disgust crossed her eyes before she immediately pretended to leave. Mu Yueqing stood still behind her but spoke up, "Your Majesty, you haven't visited the Consort lately. Did the Consort do something wrong?"
"You did nothing wrong. Whether I go to your palace is none of your business. If you don't know your own status, it's better not to come out and cause trouble!" With that, she strode away.
Mu Yueqing had no choice but to watch him leave her sight. At that moment, she suddenly thought of something and turned to the palace maid behind her, asking, "Who lives here?"
The maid's expression changed slightly, and she lowered her head awkwardly, saying softly, "Replying to Your Highness, it used to be... the Empress's palace." After saying this, she lowered her head even further.
Mu Yueqing's expression changed again, anger barely contained as she glared at the maid and demanded, "Where is the Empress now? Take me there!"
"Your Highness mustn't! The Empress is currently in the Cold Palace. His Majesty has ordered that no one is allowed to approach. Moreover, it's very ominous there; it's better if you don't go," the maid hurriedly advised.
However, Mu Yueqing was already filled with anger and could not think of anything else. She felt that her lack of favor was due to Mu Junqi's presence and was eager to see that face she despised.
"Don't worry about that! This Palace just wants to visit my sister. Even the Emperor can't stop me! You should lead the way; otherwise, you'll just have to wait for punishment."
The maid had no choice but to nod in resignation and guided Mu Yueqing toward the Cold Palace.
The Cold Palace was located in the far corner of the imperial palace, making it increasingly desolate as they walked. There was not a single person in sight despite it being broad daylight, yet it still felt eerie and cold.
Before long, the two arrived at the entrance of the Cold Palace. Looking at the dilapidated doorway, a smile appeared on their lips as they slowly walked inside. What greeted them was the sight of Mu Junqi sitting at the palace gate, eyes closed, reclining on a chair and basking in the sun. Instantly, anger enveloped their chest; they never expected that a consort residing in the Cold Palace could live so comfortably.
"Mu Junqi, you wretched woman, get up right now!" They shouted angrily as they strode over, not caring about anyone else present.
Mu Junqi had just fallen asleep when she was jolted awake by the furious voice. Blinking her sleepy eyes open, she recognized it was Mu Yueqing and became fully alert, but then she resumed her relaxed demeanor.
"What’s wrong? No longer favored? Come here to settle scores?" she said lightly.
Mu Yueqing, upon hearing this, raised her hand in anger to strike her but was stopped by Mu Junqi, who smiled and said, "Are you angry out of shame? I really don’t know whether to congratulate you or to pity you."
"Mu Junqi, don’t think you’re still the Empress. You’re nothing more than a woman living in the Cold Palace now. Killing you would be as easy as pie. Do you believe I can make you disappear from this world without a sound right now?" Mu Yueqing said with a somewhat sinister smile.
Mu Junqi merely smiled back and walked aside to size her up. "I didn’t expect you to be quite capable, managing to enter the palace so easily. Is it as you imagined? Does the Emperor dote on you?"
Mu Yueqing could only glare at her in anger, momentarily at a loss for how to retort. Seeing this, Mu Junqi continued, "My dear sister, I forgot to tell you that the Emperor has always loved only me. You entered the palace not only without gaining his favor but perhaps the entire harem doesn’t even regard you."
This made Mu Yueqing even angrier. "You wretched woman! How could the Emperor possibly like you? If he did, would you be living here? He’s just playing with you. Besides, who doesn’t know that the one you love is Xia Ziqian? Why hasn’t he come to see you? Or does he look down on you completely, you wretched woman!"
At that moment, a palace maid rushed in in a flustered manner and said anxiously, "The Emperor... the Emperor is coming."
In that instant, Mu Yueqing felt as if her heart had stopped beating. She looked at Mu Junqi with even sharper eyes. But with no way out now, she simply sat down on the ground and began to cry.
Mu Junqi naturally understood her actions but did not move; she continued to stand nearby and coldly watched everything unfold.
Before long, Mo Xiao Li arrived with Li Fusheng and others. As soon as they entered, they saw Mu Yueqing lying on the ground and Mu Junqi standing not far away.
Mu Junqi looked even thinner now, with high cheekbones and slightly sunken eyes. Just a quick glance was enough for her to look at the lowly Mu Yueqing and say in a deep voice, "Mu Yueqing, what are you doing here?!"
The palace maid hurried to help Mu Yueqing up. With tears in her eyes, she walked over delicately and said in a soft voice, "Your Majesty, you must stand up for Consort. She hit me," while casting a resentful look at Mu Junqi.
Mu Junqi merely smiled lightly upon hearing this, then coldly said to Mu Yueqing, "If you hadn't come here, would this have happened? Do you take my orders as mere wind passing by your ears?"
Upon hearing this, Mu Yueqing immediately stopped sobbing, knelt on the ground, and softly said, "Your Majesty, please see clearly. Consort only came to check on her sister but did not expect her to vent her anger on Consort. I hope Your Majesty will stand up for Consort."
Mo Xiao Li glanced at her irritably and then said to Li Fusheng behind him, "Take the noble consort back and confine her for a month!"
"Yes," Li Fusheng replied respectfully, then looked at Mu Yueqing and said, "Your Highness, please."
After everyone left, Mo Xiao Li walked up to Mu Junqi and stared into her eyes, asking, "How have you been lately?"
Mu Junqi smiled upon hearing this. "What does it matter whether I've been well or not? Is it still important now?"
"If you told me the truth, you know I would believe you. But why do you refuse to say anything? Am I really that untrustworthy?" Mo Xiao Li said with some hurt.
Mu Junqi remained silent upon hearing this, looking at the nearby withered branches and said lightly, "At this point, it's too late for anything."
