Consort Qian called out to him from behind, and he stopped in his tracks but did not turn around. Instead, he said with his back facing her, "I am tired today. Whatever the matter is, let’s discuss it tomorrow." After saying this, he ignored the calls from behind and resolutely left.
Watching Mo Xiao Li leave, Mu Junqi stamped her foot in anger, but thinking of the person behind her, she immediately changed to a smile and turned to the others, saying, “This Palace suddenly feels a bit tired. If my sisters have nothing else, This Palace will take my leave.”
“Elder sister, please take care of yourself. Then Consort takes her leave,” Consort Rong said with a smile before bowing first, and the other concubines hurriedly followed suit.
After bidding farewell to them, Consort Qian walked back with Peach. Her expression changed instantly; her eyes were deep as if lost in thought. After a long while, she quietly asked, “How is that woman doing now?”
“In response to your Highness, we have already bribed the Head Maid these past few days, and she has been tormenting her. You can rest assured,” Peach replied softly as she leaned closer to Consort Qian.
Unexpectedly, upon hearing this, Consort Qian turned around and slapped her angrily, saying, “Torment? This Palace wants her life; don’t you know that?”
Peach immediately knelt on the ground and pleaded for mercy, “Your Highness, please spare me. I will follow your teachings diligently.”
“Enough, you may rise.”
At this moment, Mu Junqi was completely unaware of the impending danger. Dressed in tattered clothes that were too thin to keep warm, she shivered involuntarily but still had to continue chopping firewood. Logically speaking, this was not something a concubine of the Cold Palace should be doing. However, she understood that this old maid must have been bribed by someone; otherwise, she would not dare act this way.
But under the eaves one must bow their head. After finally finishing chopping the firewood and stretching her back, the old maid began speaking again from behind her: “Today I’ll let you off.” After saying this, she turned and left.
Watching the departing old maid, Mu Junqi hurried inside. On the table lay a bowl of plain porridge, a plate of cabbage, and a steamed bun. She glanced at them indifferently before sitting down to eat. However, the food had long since gone cold and lacked any warmth. After struggling to finish the last bite, she stood by the window motionless, gazing outside. Ever since entering the Cold Palace, she had grown fond of standing by the window looking out at everything. Even though she could see nothing clearly, it felt as if her heart understood everything.
Night fell as expected. Just like in previous days, after nightfall the Cold Palace truly felt like an ice cellar. She curled up tightly but still found it hard to withstand the biting cold.
As the clock struck two, she still felt no trace of sleepiness. Her mind was racing with thoughts about everything that had happened over the past year. In fact, ever since Mo Xiao Li agreed to confine her to the Cold Palace, she felt as if her heart was missing something, though she couldn't quite pinpoint what it was.
She turned over, sensing a gaze upon her. Nervously, she looked into the distance, but darkness obscured everything, rendering her unable to see anything. Just then, a loud crash echoed from outside, startling her to the point where she nearly screamed. Almost immediately, the old door was kicked open from the outside.
Sitting up abruptly, she saw a man stumbling in, heading straight towards her. The air was thick with the smell of alcohol. Before she could say anything, the man leered at her and mumbled a few words before leaning in closer with a foolish grin. Mu Junqi instinctively felt that today would be her doom, yet she pushed him aside with all her strength and prepared to run outside.
However, the man quickly grabbed her ankle and leered, "Come here and let me have some fun." Despite being heavily intoxicated, he still had enough strength to pull Mu Junqi tightly into his embrace.
Mu Junqi struggled but found no response; at that moment, despair washed over her completely. She cried out in anguish, prompting the man to slap her in irritation and shout, "If you keep screaming, I'll kill you today!"
Seizing the opportunity, she stood up and ran towards the exit. But after only a few steps, her long hair was caught by someone. Pain shot through her scalp as she was violently thrown against the wall. Just as he prepared to take further action, a masked man rushed in and swiftly killed the assailant. Although she couldn't see clearly, Mu Junqi distinctly felt warm liquid splatter onto her body and fainted from shock.
After discarding his sword, the masked man walked over and gently carried her to a nearby bed before lying down beside her to provide warmth...
The next morning, when Mu Junqi awoke, she found herself alone in the room. The weather was significantly better than usual. Confused as to why the Head Maid hadn't come at this hour, she got out of bed. Suddenly recalling last night's events filled her with lingering fear; she still didn't know who had saved her.
After getting out of bed and seeing that the Cold Palace appeared unchanged—no blood on the floor and everything eerily quiet—she felt as if it had all been a dream. Just as she stepped out of the palace gates, she spotted the Head Maid approaching with a food box in hand. "From today onwards, you won't need to chop firewood anymore; this is your lunch for today," she said before turning to leave.
Everything about this situation felt abnormal; however, Mu Junqi couldn't grasp what was truly happening. Just then feeling hungry, she set aside her thoughts and noticed that today's meal seemed much better than usual. With a sarcastic smile, she began to eat.
Life in the Cold Palace was monotonous and uneventful; there wasn't even anyone to talk to. Mu Junqi began to doubt whether she had forgotten how to communicate with others altogether. The weather had grown increasingly cold during this time; yet for some reason—perhaps it was just her imagination—she sensed an air of festivity throughout the palace lately. The Head Maid's attire looked freshly changed, and there were still several days until New Year’s.
But these matters no longer seemed important to her. Just as she prepared to enter her room again, she noticed an unexpected visitor arriving. Given her current state of despair, it was natural for many to mock her behind her back. However, realizing that she was already in this situation made her feel fearless; without hesitation, she stepped inside.
Standing outside the door, Consort Qian watched Mu Junqi's actions, smiling seductively and beautifully. Beside her, Peach respectfully said, "Your Highness, since the Emperor has given the order, we should not continue to torment her."
