Looking at the gradually disappearing figure, Mo Xiao Li furrowed his brows tightly and coldly said to Zuo Yunqing behind him, "Take someone and follow immediately—"
Before he could finish speaking, a sharp scream from Mu Junqi came from a distance. Mo Xiao Li's heart tightened, and he immediately used his energy to fly in that direction. However, he had not gone far when he saw a person lying on the ground not far away. In that moment, it felt as if he had forgotten to breathe, standing there unable to take another step forward.
The people who followed him also saw the person on the ground. Zuo Yunqing was just about to step forward to check but was stopped by Mo Xiao Li, having no choice but to stand aside. It seemed he had forgotten to breathe as well, only able to watch that familiar figure lying there. At that moment, he did not know how to describe his feelings inside and could only approach step by step.
The closer he got, the more painful his heart ached. Even though it was night, how could he forget that familiar figure? When he finally reached her side and looked down, that familiar face was now devoid of life. Blood continued to flow from her abdomen and legs as if trying to drain all the blood from her body.
After seeing clearly, Mo Xiao Li forgot to think and just stared blankly, unsure of what to do next. His heart seemed to have stopped beating; regret and guilt surged together, causing him to stagger slightly. If it weren't for Zuo Yunqing beside him, he might have fallen straight to the ground. The surroundings were silent without a sound as he slowly crouched down to carefully examine her face, reaching out to gently caress her cheeks, which still held a bit of warmth. He softly said, "Mu Junqi, it's too cold lying here. Let me take you back, okay?" With that, he lifted her up horizontally.
With no breath left in her body, her head and arms fell limply down. As Mo Xiao Li walked forward gently speaking, "I always said you were too thin; I didn't expect you to be this light. You must eat more in the future."
"You must be very scared on such a dark night; I'll stay with you tonight, okay?"
"Why aren't you speaking? Are you shy again?"
"If you don't want to talk, then we'll go back and chat slowly."
Mo Xiao Li walked forward recklessly, murmuring continuously without stopping as if there were countless words he wanted to say. The people behind him followed at a distance but none dared to step forward or say anything.
Before long, they arrived at Qinxiang Garden. Just before entering, Ziyue and Huixin rushed out anxiously. They had suddenly lost consciousness for some unknown reason and woke up only to hear that the Empress had been abducted. Knowing something serious had happened but not knowing where to search for her, they had no choice but to wait in the palace. Soon after, they saw the Emperor carrying the Empress back. As they rushed out to greet him, they did not expect to see such a scene.
Huixin immediately rushed over with tears streaming down her face and cried out, "Empress! What happened? Please wake up!"
Before the words were finished, Mo Xiao Li softly said, "You all can leave. The Empress is tired, and I want to stay with her. She is fine; she just fell asleep." With that, he carried her into the bedroom, leaving Ziyue and Huixin looking at each other in confusion.
Ziyue seemed to suddenly remember something and rushed to Zuo Yunqing's side. She slightly bowed and said, "The Empress..."
Zuo Yunqing nodded, her brow furrowed as she spoke, "The Empress was kidnapped. By the time we arrived with the Emperor, it was already too late. We had just agreed to let him go, but unexpectedly he took the chance to kill the Empress. The Emperor might not be able to accept this right now."
Listening to Zuo Yunqing's account, Ziyue and Huixin collapsed onto the ground. They never imagined that the person who had been sitting in front of them just a short while ago would now be a cold corpse. Unable to suppress their inner guilt any longer, they were overwhelmed by uncontrollable pain.
At that moment, Mo Xiao Li gently placed Mu Junqi on the bed and covered her with a blanket. Looking at her peaceful face, Mo Xiao Li spoke, "I know you are tired today. Let's continue our conversation tomorrow, shall we?" He reached out to gently wipe away the blood from her forehead and then sat quietly beside her, gazing at her sleeping face.
...
At dawn, the entire palace was in an uproar. The news of the Empress's murder had spread to every corner of the inner palace. Upon hearing this news, the Empress Dowager hurried over. As she arrived at Qinxiang Garden, she saw all the palace maids and eunuchs kneeling in the courtyard. Her heart sank. Ziyue noticed that it was the Empress Dowager and walked over to respectfully bow without saying a word.
Jingxi spoke first, "Where is the Emperor?"
"The Emperor is in the bedroom with the Empress," Ziyue replied as tears began to flow uncontrollably.
The Empress Dowager glanced at her and understood immediately. She hurried inside and pushed open the bedroom door, only to find Mo Xiao Li sitting there in despair, seemingly unaware of their presence. She quickly walked over, circled around the screen, and saw the person lying on the bed. Initially thinking it was just a rumor, she now realized that everything was true.
With some concern, she spoke up, "My son, once a person dies, they cannot come back to life. You must take care of yourself."
Only then did Mo Xiao Li look up at her. He stood up; having not slept all night, his eyes were bloodshot. He glanced at the person on the bed and said to the Empress Dowager, "Empress Dowager, why did you come so early? Mu Junqi has not woken up yet; let's discuss things later." He then walked over to the bed to adjust Mu Junqi's blanket again.
Hearing this, the Empress Dowager felt a bit dazed, momentarily unable to distinguish what was real and what was false. She walked a few steps forward and saw that the person lying on the bed had already lost all vitality, her cheeks were already bruised. Understanding the situation, she reached out and grasped Mo Xiao Li's arm, saying with pain, "Mu Junqi is dead; you cannot be so stubborn!"
"Who says she is dead? She is just asleep! She promised to stay with me for a lifetime! I will not believe what you say!" Mo Xiao Li suddenly roared in anger.
The Empress Dowager felt darkness cloud her vision and nearly fainted. Steadying herself, she walked back to Mo Xiao Li's side and whispered, "My child, listen to the Empress Dowager's advice. The Empress has passed away; you should let her rest in peace. This would also be a way to give her closure." As she spoke, she wiped away her tears.
Upon hearing this, it seemed as if all of Mo Xiao Li's strength had been instantly drained away. He weakly sat down on a nearby chair and remained silent for a long time. The Empress Dowager could only stand by his side and keep him company.
After an unknown amount of time, a hoarse male voice echoed in the room, "Empress Dowager, do you think this is a punishment for me? Does Heaven think I have lived too happily, so it wants to take everything away from me? Is that it? Is that it?"
The Empress Dowager sighed softly without responding. Instead, she walked to the door and called out, "The Empress has passed!"
Hearing this cry, Mo Xiao Li could no longer bear the heart-wrenching pain. He rushed to the bedside and embraced Mu Junqi's body, sobbing uncontrollably while angrily pounding his fists against the side of the bed. This scene moved the Empress Dowager as well; she wiped her tears while regretting everything she had ever done to Mu Junqi.
