Uncertain if it was her illusion, Mu Junqi felt as though someone had been watching her every move these past few days. She shared this concern with Ziyue, who immediately relayed the information to Mo Xiao Li.
Consequently, Mo Xiao Li dispatched guards in layers around Qinxiang Garden and secretly sent Shadow Guards. Despite these precautions, he still worried that Mu Junqi might be in danger.
After safely passing seven or eight days, Mu Junqi requested Mo Xiao Li to dismiss the guards. However, on that particular night, as Mo Xiao Li came to join her and Little Prince for dinner, just as he was about to leave, they heard sounds of fighting outside, causing everyone's hearts to race.
Mu Junqi tightly held Little Prince in her arms, her eyes filled with worry. After calming her down, Mo Xiao Li ordered others to take good care of them before stepping outside. As soon as he did, he saw a group of men in black engaged in a struggle with the Imperial Forest Army, the clash of weapons creating a deafening noise. Suddenly, one of the attackers charged at him with a sword, and Mo Xiao Li quickly flipped over and took him down in a few swift moves.
After a fierce battle, just when it seemed safe, a heart-wrenching scream echoed from within the palace. His heart leaped into his throat as he shouted, "Capture them alive!" and rushed inside.
Upon entering, he saw palace maids and eunuchs lying scattered on the ground. Mu Junqi, holding the child, was shielded by Ziyue and Huixin, trembling all over. The intruder wore a black outfit and had his face covered with a black cloth, making it impossible to identify him. Upon seeing Mo Xiao Li, he immediately lunged toward Little Prince in Mu Junqi's arms.
With nowhere left to retreat, Huixin closed her eyes tightly and embraced both Mu Junqi and Little Prince. However, the anticipated pain never came. Slowly opening her eyes, Mu Junqi saw Mo Xiao Li standing in front of them, and then the attacker vanished just as suddenly as he had appeared.
The long sword pierced through Mo Xiao Li's waist, his face turning pale instantly as he slowly collapsed. At that moment, Zuo Yunqing and others returned after dealing with the attackers outside. Upon seeing the wound on Mo Xiao Li, they rushed over while Li Fusheng hurried out to find a physician.
With tears in her eyes, Mu Junqi watched this scene unfold. She handed Little Prince to the nearby Liu Wet Nurse and reached out to support Mo Xiao Li, but his body was already uncontrollably falling down.
Together they helped lift Mo Xiao Li onto the bed. Before long, the physicians arrived, led by none other than Xia Ziqian. However, at that moment, all of Mu Junqi's attention was focused on Mo Xiao Li, completely oblivious to Xia Ziqian.
Caught off guard by this sudden turn of events, several people worked together to treat the wound. Trembling all over, Mu Junqi watched as blood soaked through the sheets and fearfully turned to Ziyue, asking, "Is His Majesty—Is His Majesty alright?"
Supporting her firmly, Ziyue quickly replied, "Your Highness, please don't worry; His Majesty will be fine. You mustn't be afraid."
After an unknown amount of time, the wound was finally treated and was no longer bleeding as much. Mu Junqi then realized that her palms were drenched in sweat.
Xia Ziqian turned around to look at Mu Junqi and said, "Empress, don't worry. The wound has been treated. Once the Emperor wakes up, everything will be fine."
Mu Junqi then noticed the person who had come in. At that moment, she simply nodded in confusion and asked, "When will the Emperor wake up?"
"That's hard to say. He might wake up tomorrow."
At this moment, Mu Junqi realized that her heart had been entirely focused on Mo Xiao Li, anxiously looking at the person on the bed. His face was pale, and even his lips had lost their color. The others had retreated, and she slowly walked over to sit beside him, silently praying for him.
"Empress, you are still in your confinement period; you must take care of your health and not worry."
Mu Junqi nodded in reassurance. She never doubted his words, not even now. The anxiety she had been holding onto finally eased, and then she looked at Ziyue beside her and said, "Take Lord Xia back." After saying this, she turned her gaze back to Mo Xiao Li on the bed.
Xia Ziqian gave her a deep look, bowed respectfully, and then withdrew. The room fell silent again. Upon reflection, she realized that for so long, she had never truly looked at him. Now that she examined him closely, she found him exceptionally handsome. She reached out to caress his cheek as the candlelight elongated her shadow.
This night was destined to be a sleepless one. The entire palace heard the news of the Emperor's assassination attempt; everyone was anxious and fearful, with the Imperial Forest Army patrolling throughout the palace.
The next morning, when Mo Xiao Li woke up, he saw Mu Junqi sleeping beside him. As he moved slightly, it pulled at his wound, causing him to involuntarily grunt in pain. Mu Junqi was a light sleeper and immediately woke up, asking nervously, "What happened? What’s wrong?"
Seeing Mu Junqi like this filled Mo Xiao Li's heart with warmth. His eyes held more tenderness as he looked at her. "I'm fine now; don't worry about me. Why don't you come up and sleep? It's still early; stay here with me for a while," he said as he shifted inward.
After a night of restlessness, her body was already sore from tension. Hearing his words and noticing that it was almost dawn outside, she lowered her head and replied, "No need for that; how is your body now? Consort will go find the physician." With that, she made a move to leave.
Mo Xiao Li pulled her arm back, and another wave of pain surged through her, causing her to furrow her brows tightly. Mu Junqi dared not move recklessly and could only lie beside her with a flushed face. In that moment, he felt like the happiest person in the world; everything that had happened before seemed insignificant.
Mu Junqi lay still beside her, afraid that any movement would aggravate her injury. Unconsciously, he fell asleep again, only waking up when he heard a commotion outside.
Seeing that it was already a quarter past Chen time, he sat up abruptly and then heard Ziyue's voice from outside, "Empress, the Empress Dowager has arrived."
Mu Junqi quickly got up and tidied himself a bit before saying, "Come in."
When the Empress Dowager entered, her expression was somewhat displeased. Mu Junqi silently stepped aside while the Empress Dowager walked straight over to grasp Mo Xiao Li's hand, tears welling in her eyes as she said, "My child, how could you be so careless and injure yourself?" She then looked at the others in the room and coldly reprimanded, "How are you all taking care of the Emperor?"
Mo Xiao Li immediately spoke up, "Empress Dowager, please do not worry. This was my carelessness; it is not their fault."
Upon hearing this, the Empress Dowager's expression softened slightly, but she still harbored some resentment. She turned to Mu Junqi and said, "I heard yesterday that you and Xiao Hanzhe are fine?"
"Thank you for your concern, Empress Dowager. The Consort is fine."
The Empress Dowager continued to murmur some words before finally leaving. Before she departed, she repeatedly instructed Mo Xiao Li to rest well in the coming days and emphasized that they must take good care of the Emperor before leaving satisfied.
