"Zero, we are going to the source of the information we received during the Zombie incident," Ziyu recalled that when he started attacking the Zombie, he received a message from the mastermind behind this event.
"Okay."
"Sir, it's right here, down into a basement." Zero directed Ziyu to a location and said, "This basement is not marked on the City Structure Map, which indicates it was established later."
Every city has its own map, marking everything constructed at the time, and Zero could not find this basement on that map.
"Also, sir, the size of the basement is unknown."
"Understood." Ziyu landed on the Ground and then entered the building in front of him.
No one lived here anymore; even in two or three months, it was unlikely anyone would dare to live in this area.
"I can't find the entrance." Ziyu searched around but found no passage into the basement; it was clearly hidden.
"The floor is wooden; just blow it open." Ziyu relied on the Power System to stick to the ceiling, then activated the Laser Emitter, blasting a hole through the Ground.
"Alright, just a couple more hits will do." The Laser penetrated the floor, revealing the basement, but the hole was too small and needed a few more strikes.
"Boom!" Ziyu landed on the Ground of the basement and cautiously moved forward.
"Ah..." Ziyu shouted as a loud metallic clanging sound echoed nearby, and then he was pinned against the wall by an incredibly strong force.
"Clank... clank..." Chains wrapped around him, and additional metal restraints secured Ziyu, leaving him unable to move.
"Ziyu... I knew it, with such advanced technology, you would definitely be able to find me here, and I've been waiting for you... although it seems you are late." A man dressed in black stood close to Ziyu.
Ziyu struggled to open his eyes and saw that there was a monster beside the man in black.
"For a long time, I have been secretly conducting experiments on this land... and finally succeeded in creating this." The man pointed at the monster beside him. The creature was covered in scales, with long claws that were completely bone-like and extremely hard. Just moments ago, Ziyu had been attacked by this creature.
It was clear that this monster's original form was human.
"Pervert..." Ziyu glared fiercely at the man before him.
"No... no..." the man rebutted, "This is a great evolution of life, transforming from weakness to the stage of a god!"
"In the past, I conducted secret experiments here and scared away quite a few residents. Do you remember that bomb? The one that exploded near your Battle Armor?" the man asked. "I installed my specially developed stealth virus in that bomb and dropped it over Farmland..."
"To prevent an early outbreak, the virus I designed cannot act immediately, and the virus loaded in the bomb will not react when ingested by humans. It must develop on crops for a while before it can take effect." The man spoke excitedly about his proud creation.
So that was the purpose of that bomb. Ziyu understood that the food produced in that Farmland was all local and would not flow outside, which is why it only developed in this small town.
"The method of transmission is also quite special. You know that infected individuals will vomit blood, right? But if their blood touches someone else, it won't have an immediate effect..." the man continued. "Infected individuals will attack those who are uninfected. When an uninfected person is injured by an infected individual, the infected blood enters their bloodstream, thus achieving transmission."
Ziyu had previously been splattered with blood but had not been infected.
"Of course," the man said as he walked over to Ziyu, looking at the monster together with him, "Their greatest advantage is that they do not resist my will..."
"You don't think it's cruel?" Ziyu said.
"Cruel? This world is inherently cruel..." The man laughed sickly. "I'm just fulfilling my ideals."
"Ideals... People like you deserve to die!" Ziyu's gaze was sharp.
"Enough, I've said too much to you," the man walked over to the monster and pointed at Ziyu. "Kill him."
"Enough, I've said too much to you... You shouldn't have so much to say." Ziyu smiled, and the Battle Armor on his shoulders split open, extending a small missile from each side, both launching simultaneously. One struck the man directly, while the other was blocked by the monster.
"Ah!!!!" The monster let out a terrifying howl and charged directly at Ziyu.
Ziyu soared into the air, spinning around as dozens of bullets shot toward the monster.
The monster almost ignored Ziyu's bullet attacks, while the man who had already fallen showed some reaction.
"I, Gou Xiangyu, have faced defeat time and again; this time I will not back down." Despite having a bullet hole in his forehead, the man stood up unharmed.
"Gou Xiangyu?" Ziyu's heart stirred. "Isn't that the doctor who wanted to conduct a biochemical study but was opposed by the national research organization?"
There had been news before about a doctor named Gou Xiangyu wanting to carry out biochemical research but being stopped.
"It seems there are still people who remember me..." Gou Xiangyu said. "Without the support of research institutions, I can still succeed... Look, my masterpiece!"
Gou Xiangyu's body began to tremble, and then he let out a painful roar.
Parts of his body started to swell and then recede, as if something inside him was pushing against his skin.
"Ah..." Gou Xiangyu's outer layer cracked like hard Ground, breaking apart, as new limbs and skin burst forth from within.
"A giant spider?" Ziyu looked at the monster that Gou Xiangyu had become; now, only his head resembled its original form.
"This is evolution! A clever mind paired with a powerful body! This is true evolution!" Gou Xiangyu screamed desperately.
"I wonder if you can ever go back..." Ziyu smiled. To give up one's body for strength—was that still truly oneself?
"The space is too small; we need to get out." Ziyu turned and flew out through the gap created by the earlier explosion, while the two monsters charged forward recklessly.
"Zero, contact the nearest military base and report the situation here..." Ziyu instructed. "Don't notify the police; they don't have enough firepower. If they come and get infected instead of killed, it will just cause chaos... Also, have the military base dispatch air support. I can hold them off for a while longer!"
"Understood, sir."
Ziyu flew high into the sky, looking down at the two monsters: "Come up here~~"
