Li Yunyang touched his face, looking conflicted as he murmured, "No way, am I that ugly?"
In fact, Li Yunyang was not bad-looking. Although his skin was a bit dark, it had a bronze tone reminiscent of Louis Koo. He had thick eyebrows and big eyes, and his face and figure were quite decent. However, his temperament was too childish, and he was too young—not my type at all. To be honest, I still think Lan Ran Qingtian is more to my taste.
Xiang Xueer turned around, ready to shake off Li Yunyang like a stubborn gum, when suddenly a series of urgent gong sounds came from the nearby market, the sharp noise echoing throughout the street.
Li Yunyang turned to look into the distance and pulled Xiang Xueer into the crowd. "It seems like they are posting a notice. Let's go check it out!"
"Hey, don’t pull me! You little brat!" Xiang Xueer squeezed to the front of the crowd and saw a portrait of a young woman on the wall with three large characters written above: Fugitive.
"Wow, this young and beautiful woman is actually a fugitive who has killed thirteen people!"
"If we catch this woman, we can get five hundred taels of silver!" A few people inside were whispering incessantly.
A serial killer? Xiang Xueer became intrigued and carefully examined the content. It was indeed true; the woman looked to be only in her teens. How could such a seemingly weak woman kill thirteen people in succession? It was quite unbelievable. Did she have muscles all over her body and strength like an ox?
Standing beside her, Li Yunyang wore a thoughtful expression. He tilted his head and leaned closer to her ear to ask, "What do you think is going on?"
With that question from Li Yunyang, Xiang Xueer immediately thought of demons. She exchanged glances with Li Yunyang, and the two stepped out of the crowd.
"Could it be the work of demons?" Xiang Xueer stroked her chin. After all, there were demons everywhere; it wouldn't be strange if there were some in this village.
"Haha, little demon! Just wait until I come over to deal with you!" Li Yunyang placed his hands on his hips and laughed heartily before patting Xiang Xueer's shoulder. "Come on, let's get ready; we'll go hunt demons tonight!"
"Hey, you can go by yourself! Why do you have to drag me along?" Xiang Xueer quickly realized that this guy really didn't see her as an outsider. She hated people who were so familiar right away, especially someone who hadn't even fully grown up yet.
Seeing her uninterested expression, Li Yunyang excitedly held up five fingers. "Five hundred taels! Are you really not going?"
Money? Ah! Xiang Xueer just realized a major problem. She reached into her bag and rummaged through the scattered items inside. After paying the blacksmith a deposit, there was hardly any silver left. It was still a long way to Outer Village, and without money, how could she survive?
She swallowed hard and poked at her withered bicep. She couldn't carry anything on her shoulders or lift anything with her hands. Forget about working; without a weapon, no skills for survival, and no money, damn it, how did I end up in such a miserable body?
After struggling for a few seconds, Xiang Xueer reluctantly nodded, "Alright, hunting demons is fine, but I want half of the reward!"
"Sure, two hundred and fifty each!" Li Yunyang nodded with a grin and headed toward the inn. The corner of Xiang Xueer's eye twitched; what a lucky number that was—you're the real fool here.
They waited until late at night when the old man on watch rang the bell several times: "It's late at night; be careful of fire hazards!"
Li Yunyang and Xiang Xueer hid in a dark alleyway. He looked up at the sky when suddenly a gentle breeze blew by, revealing a seductive crescent moon that resembled the cold smile of a devil. The wind picked up speed, quickly dispersing the clouds that had obscured the moon's original form.
Xiang Xueer shivered; it was clearly summer, yet she felt chills all over.
"Hey, it seems quiet. Are you sure we can find that female demon here?" Xiang Xueer nudged Li Yunyang with her arm, casting a sideways glance at the empty street.
Li Yunyang stretched his neck like a police dog and looked around. "Yeah, I've asked the locals nearby. This woman likes to hunt for prey in this residential area at midnight."
Just then, a shadow darted out from above the eaves and swiftly entered one of the houses. A chilling scream followed, and the shadow stood atop the roof, glancing around toward the desolate forest across the street.
The two pressed tightly against the wall and held their breath. Xiang Xueer took out a mirror from her pocket and angled it toward the roof. Inside, a woman with disheveled hair swayed in the wind; her enchanting eyes flashed with cold light before disappearing from sight. From across the trees came sounds of beasts scattering; it seemed she had headed in that direction.
Li Yunyang's ears perked up slightly as he listened intently before grabbing his Azure Dragon Sword and sprinting toward the forest.
"Hey, wait for me!" Xiang Xueer followed closely behind him. After about half an hour, they entered the forest. She remained alert to her surroundings while Li Yunyang squinted toward a pile of rubble on the left. "This way!"
Hmm? Xiang Xueer was puzzled; he had found her earlier without any clues and now seemed to know exactly where to go. She curiously asked, "Hey, how do you know where she is? I say you must be part dog!"
Li Yunyang laughed immediately, "What's so difficult about this? My sense of smell is very sharp. Before I met my master, I was raised by wolves!"
Raised by wolves? Xiang Xueer suddenly stopped in her tracks, looking him up and down with a smirk, "Wow, no way, a real-life version of 'Midnight Werewolf Transformation.' Come on, show me how to turn into a wolf!"
Li Yunyang frowned and glanced at her. What 'Midnight Werewolf Transformation'? What is this woman thinking? Suddenly, he grabbed Xiang Xueer's arm, "Shh, don't make a sound. I feel like she's nearby!"
Nearby? Upon hearing this, Xiang Xueer entered a combat stance. Li Yunyang's eyes began scanning the area until they suddenly landed on a cliff about five hundred meters away.
He exchanged a glance with Xiang Xueer, and the two quietly approached the cliff. At the base of the cliff was a round cave about two to three meters high. As soon as Xiang Xueer got close, a pungent aroma wafted out from the cave, mixed with an unpleasant odor that was hard to appreciate.
"Fox?" Li Yunyang frowned suddenly. He covered his nose and said, "Hmph! No wonder it smells so bad; it's the stench of a fox!"
"A fox? Could it be a Fox Demon?" Xiang Xueer shrugged. She was used to all kinds of monsters; nothing could scare her.
"Hmph, you dead fox, just wait! I'm coming in to deal with you!" Li Yunyang snorted coldly and drew his Azure Dragon Sword. The two lit their torches and slowly walked toward the cave entrance.
The dim light made it hard for Xiang Xueer to tolerate the beast's smell, so she had to cover her nose. The flickering light extended deep into the cave; it seemed quite extensive. After walking for a while, she suddenly tripped over something with a 'thud,' and then she heard a rolling sound echoing into the cave.
What was that? Xiang Xueer frowned and extended her torch forward. A bloody human skull stared back at her with hollow eyes. She was so frightened that she stumbled backward and leaned against Li Yunyang's chest.
"What happened?" Li Yunyang steadied her with one hand and looked in the direction of her gaze. Upon seeing the skull, he cursed softly, "Looks like this really is that beast's lair; there are leftover corpses scattered everywhere!"
