"It’s me!" A familiar voice emerged from the darkness. He focused his gaze and slowly lowered the Azure Dragon Sword with a sigh, "Ah, Qingtian, you scared me!"
A strange smile appeared on Lan Ran Qingtian's face as he slowly walked towards Li Yunyang. "By the way, did you hear any strange noises just now? I really want to hear Shirley's scream!"
"What? You heard it too?" Li Yunyang looked worriedly towards the opposite direction. "Yes, let's hurry over there. I also caught a whiff of Hellhound's scent; I have a feeling she’s in danger!"
"Sure!" Lan Ran Qingtian nodded leisurely. "But you're going the wrong way; we should go this way!"
Li Yunyang turned to glance in the opposite direction, feeling puzzled. "No, that can't be right. My nose doesn't lie; I clearly smelled her in this direction."
"Ah, well!" Qingtian hesitated for a moment, then pulled Li Yunyang quickly towards the direction he pointed out. "I know, everything in the direction of the Lost Forest is reversed, so trust me; taking this path will help us find Shirley faster!"
After thinking it over, Li Yunyang realized it made sense. It was the same when he first entered the Misty Forest; no matter how he walked, he couldn’t find his way out. Although he didn’t like Lan Ran Qingtian, he was a member of the Holy Ten Exorcists, experienced and knowledgeable. He figured he wouldn’t be wrong, so without further thought, he followed Qingtian and started running.
Li Yunyang didn’t know how long they had been running until he was out of breath and finally stopped. He turned to look back; the scent was clearly fading, yet he still hadn’t found Xiang Xueer.
"Hey, wait! You... don’t run anymore!" He leaned against a Tree Trunk, looking confused. "I mean, Lan Ran Qingtian, where exactly are you taking me? I feel like we’re getting further away from Dead Girl!"
Lan Ran Qingtian also stopped and tilted his head, looking at Li Yunyang with interest. "It seems you really like her. But I think Shirley seems to prefer me more!"
"What did you say?" Upon hearing this, Li Yunyang immediately flew into a rage. "Shut up! She’s my wife; don’t get any ideas about her! Otherwise, even if you are one of the Holy Ten Exorcists, I won’t go easy on you!"
"Oh?" After hearing this, Qingtian wore an indifferent expression, shrugged his shoulders, and spread his hands with a smile. "Well then, I’m curious to see how you plan to be 'not easy' on me!"
Li Yunyang's eagle-like eyes instantly turned cold. This Lan Ran Qingtian was acting strangely today; even though the common people and Dead Girl were in danger, he seemed completely unconcerned and even appeared to be provoking him.
Something was off. Li Yunyang reached for the Azure Dragon Sword on his back, continuously sizing him up. Normally, Lan Ran Qingtian would never refer to Xiang Xueer as Shirley; he would call her Miss Jiao Rong. Could it be...?
Without a word, Li Yunyang drew the Azure Dragon Sword and unleashed his secret move, shouting at the Lan Ran Qingtian in front of him, “Azure Dragon Slash!”
With a whoosh, several beams of white sword light shot out, and Lan Ran Qingtian instantly vanished. Li Yunyang looked around in shock. Suddenly, a cold voice laughed from behind him, “Hehehe, oh dear, you got angry so quickly. So easily provoked!”
Li Yunyang glanced sideways at Lan Ran Qingtian standing behind him. Beneath his sharp brows, his eagle-like eyes radiated cold anger as he sneered, “What kind of Demon are you to dare show off in front of me? Reveal your true form!”
Qingtian pouted after hearing this, a sinister smile creeping onto his lips as he clapped his hands mockingly: “How boring! You discovered me so quickly; I thought I could play a little longer!”
As he spoke, his original appearance gradually began to reveal itself. The handsome face of Lan Ran Qingtian started to peel away piece by piece from his skin to his entire body, falling to the ground with a splat, bloody chunks sticking together like spider silk. The whole process was shocking and grotesque.
After a while, the monster's skin and flesh finally finished peeling away, revealing a fox-like demon before Li Yunyang. Its overall form resembled a standing Fox Demon, with its crescent-shaped eyes exuding cruelty and cunning. Its body was covered in yellow fur, standing upright on its feet while bat-like wings extended from its arms, slightly opened to form a pair of flying wings.
“What... what kind of creature are you?!” This was the first time Li Yunyang had encountered such a demon. The earlier peeling process had been bizarre enough to make him more cautious as he raised his long sword, pointing it directly at the monster's nose.
“Hehehe!” The demon covered its mouth with its hand and laughed incessantly. That eerie laughter sent shivers down his spine: “What’s wrong? Aren’t you the self-proclaimed top disciple of Saint Ten Feng Qingyang? Have you never seen a Shape-shifting Monster?”
Shape-shifting Monster? Li Yunyang recalled hearing about them from his master; these demons could change forms and were particularly skilled at transforming into human shapes. They were known as Fierce Foxes.
“Fierce Fox?” Li Yunyang blurted out involuntarily. The bloody mess on the ground seemed to be its disguise; human skin and flesh indicated that before finding him, this beast had already harmed many innocent people.
Li Yunyang turned to glance at the mountain valley across from him. His greatest concern was still Xiang Xueer; he wondered how Lan Ran Qingtian, who was following him, was doing. He hoped she wasn't deceived by that damned fox like he was.
A wave of worry surged in his heart. Suddenly, in the blink of an eye, the Shape-shifting Monster that had been standing in front of him vanished. Li Yunyang was taken aback and was about to look around when he felt a chilling sensation behind him. He turned to see five white claws lunging toward his eyes. He quickly jumped back, narrowly avoiding the attack, but he was drenched in cold sweat from the scare.
That was close; if he hadn't reacted quickly, he would have ended up as a soul under that dead fox's claws. Before Li Yunyang could even feel relieved, a series of attacks came rushing at him. He moved like the wind, agilely dodging the opponent's strikes.
"Hmph! I thought you had some skills; turns out you only know how to dodge!" The Shape-shifting Monster taunted as it attacked rapidly. Wherever its claws passed—tree trunks, ground, rocks—there were clear and deep scratch marks. It spoke provocatively, "It seems that this Saint Ten's Feng Qingyang isn't anything special; the disciples he teaches are all weaklings!"
Upon hearing this, Li Yunyang immediately flew into a rage. He raised his Azure Dragon Sword and began to slash wildly: "You damn fox, don't slander my master! Watch as I turn you into a dead fox today!"
"Azure Dragon Slash!" he shouted, unleashing his trump card. The fox seemed unfazed; it extended its arm and flapped its wings beneath it, stirring up a cloud of dust that made it hard for anyone to see.
"Damn it!" Li Yunyang cursed under his breath, using his arm to shield himself from the dust blowing toward him. In the haze, he couldn't see anything; sand got into his eyes, forcing him to close them and rely on his keen sense of smell.
He wrinkled his nose repeatedly, searching for the direction of the Shape-shifting Monster in the dusty air. After a while, he suddenly sensed something was off. He sniffed hard and realized that there was no trace of the Demon around him anymore. He opened his eyes and found that the Demon had completely vanished.
What’s going on? What’s happening? Li Yunyang looked around in the dark forest. What did this Shape-shifting Monster mean? It had transformed into Lan Ran Qingtian's appearance to approach him, pretended not to attack, and then suddenly disappeared?
