Pluto stood in front of a simple wooden table, on which lay a hand-drawn map. His fingertips lightly traced over the map, finally stopping on an area of forest. His face was serious.
"The terrain of this forest is narrow and winding, enough to slow down the entire legion's marching speed. Once ambushed, the situation will be quite dangerous," Pluto explained.
The senior Generals in the room were all listening attentively, each with a serious expression. The warning from the reconnaissance team made the already tense atmosphere even more solemn.
"I have decided to form an vanguard made up of elite infantry and archers. They need to move quickly, advance to occupy advantageous terrain. If they can successfully reach the other side of the forest and set up a signal, the main force will know it's safe to pass," continued Pluto.
A General interjected, "What about the Escort team in the rear?"
Pluto replied, "The rear Escort team will be composed of heavy infantry and cavalry, their main task is to ensure the safety of the rear supply line, and be prepared to respond to any potential emergencies. I will personally lead this team."
General nodded in agreement with the arrangement for Pluto, seeming quite satisfied.
At that moment, a General stood up. It was Maximian, a man with an almost greedy desire for battle achievements and fame.
"Legion commander, I am willing to lead this vanguard," Maximian said confidently.
Pluto glanced at him, a barely noticeable sense of wariness flashing through his mind. He had naturally heard of Maximian, a person extremely eager to prove himself.
"Very well, Maximian. This mission is crucial for us, and I hope you take it seriously. Do not let personal desires affect the overall situation."
Maximian nodded, appearing respectful on the surface, but no one knew what he was really thinking.
Pluto stood in the center of the military camp, gazing at the soldiers in front of him. He needed to select an Escort team, a crucial task that required no room for error. His eyes scanned the faces of the men, finally settling on a few seasoned veterans. Their eyes, deep and steady, bore the marks of countless battles, displaying a composure different from that of the younger soldiers.
"Anthony, Claudie, Marcus, come here," Pluto called their names. The selected veterans walked over, understanding that being chosen was an honor as well as a heavy responsibility.
"You will serve as my Escort team," Pluto said solemnly, "I trust your judgment and courage. Our next mission may be extremely dangerous, but we have a responsibility to complete it."
The veterans bowed their heads in respect. They knew that this mission held extraordinary significance for Pluto and was equally important to the entire Legio IX, even to the entire Roman Empire.
At the same time, Senior Centurion Maximian stood on the other side, his task was to form a vanguard. He knew how to inspire soldiers, so he said loudly:
"The mission of the vanguard is to explore the unknown, to be the vanguard, to be warriors! Join the vanguard, not only will you receive double pay, but you will also receive the highest honor! Whoever is willing to join, step forward now!"
The soldiers immediately boiled with excitement. Many, including some young recruits, were eager to try. Among them was Cyrus, who, despite his loyalty, was still young and naturally yearned for glory and rewards.
"I am willing to join the advanced team as a senior centurion!" Cyrus stepped forward with determination.
Maximian glanced at the young soldier and smiled, saying, "Very good, Cyrus. I believe you will be an important member of the vanguard."
The formations of soldiers on both sides gradually took shape, and Pluto and Maximian exchanged a satisfied look. They knew that the upcoming mission would be dangerous and important, but at least they had a strong and reliable team. They were ready to face the challenges of the future, whatever they may be.
Pluto stood in the center of the military camp, his sharp gaze sweeping over rows of Roman soldiers. He had selected several of the most experienced and battle-hardened veterans to form his Escort team. These soldiers were silent and disciplined, their heavy shields and spears gleaming from careful maintenance.
On the other side, Senior Centurion Maximian was busy assembling the vanguard. He stood on a small wooden platform, his eyes keenly watching a group of young but passionate soldiers below. Standing before the vanguard, clad in shining armor, wielding swords, their gaze resolute.
"Soldiers, we are about to set off to the village ahead. I won't lie to you, this road may be filled with unknown dangers, and there may even be ambushes," Maximian's voice echoed in the camp.
"But we are part of the Roman Ninth Legion, we are warriors forged by blood and iron. We fear no challenge, no enemy. Once we confirm the path ahead is safe, I will fire the signal arrow. This will be the signal for the Escort team to depart."
He paused for a moment, looked around, and saw every face filled with anticipation and confidence.
"Imagine, when we successfully complete this mission, you will become heroes, remembered for eternity. Honor, wealth, everything will belong to you!"
The soldiers' faces lit up with brilliant smiles as they raised their weapons and let out thunderous battle cries.
"For Rome! For glory!" Maximian raised his sword and shouted.
The soldiers responded, their morale soaring as if they could already see that bright future.
Maximian nodded in satisfaction and then turned towards Pluto.
" Legion commander, the vanguard is ready. Once we confirm the front is secure, I will launch a signal arrow to notify the Escort team."
Pluto looked at Maximian and nodded.
"Very well, Maximian. Please proceed with caution and ensure the safe return of your people."
Two people's eyes met, and in that instant, all words became unnecessary.
vanguard began to move, with steady and confident steps. They knew it was a dangerous mission, but also one filled with opportunities and honor. They were willing to face the unknown challenges for these reasons.
Maximian is at the forefront of the vanguard, raising his sword and pointing towards the path ahead. He silently prays, hoping that everything will go as he wishes. Then, he gives the command to depart.
"Advance!"
So, the vanguard slowly walked out of the camp, heading towards an unknown future, while the Escort team waited at a distance, ready to receive the signal arrow and depart later.
Pluto stood at the edge of the camp, watching them from afar, with a hint of doubt and worry in his heart, but he knew that all of this was a necessary trial.
He took out his sword, looked at the blade, and then sheathed it again.
"May the gods protect us," he muttered quietly.
