The body left too suddenly, and before Autumn Wind could feel his warmth, she was immediately surrounded by cold.
Autumn Wind had seen countless scenes like this on screens, on the streets, and at recording sites, but when such a scene unfolded right before her eyes, her body went numb, unable to express any reaction.
The sound of Qiu Mowen closing the door startled Autumn Wind, reminding her of his resolute words when he embraced her, as if the end of the world had come. She had to face the fact that Qiu Mowen had already left.
Finally unable to hold back, Autumn Wind cried out loud, making the empty house feel even more desolate.
If it weren't for Leo's phone call, perhaps Autumn Wind would have been dazed until Qiu Ruolan returned in the middle of the night. If she didn't come back tonight, Autumn Wind might have remained in that state until morning.
As soon as Leo spoke, he apologized for not receiving Autumn Wind's call. Looking at the time, it was four in the afternoon. After maintaining one position for a long time, her neck felt a bit stiff. Autumn Wind mumbled, "What time? Where is the recording? What do you need?"
Leo clearly did not anticipate Autumn Wind's indifference and kept blaming her for being heartless. In the end, he provided her with an answer: six-thirty, at Central; just come.
With a soft "oh," Autumn Wind hung up the phone. The expression of Qiu Mowen resurfaced in her mind, and tears began to fall from her eyes again. She fumbled for her phone and called Qiu Ruolan. A warm voice she had never heard before came through: "Hello, is that you? What's going on?"
Autumn Wind briefly explained about going to the recording. Qiu Ruolan did not offer any opinions but simply reminded Autumn Wind to be careful on the way. Then it seemed she had nothing more to say and waited for Autumn Wind to hang up first.
However, Autumn Wind thought the same way; she was also waiting for Qiu Ruolan to hang up first. After about ten seconds of silence, Autumn Wind finally couldn't help but say, "There's one more thing... Ervin Uncle, he went to the mainland; he might stay for half a year!"
For some reason, when Autumn Wind uttered the words "mainland," there was a clear sound of Qiu Ruolan swallowing. After that sound ended, Qiu Ruolan said, "Hmm, I understand! Be careful on your way!"
Surprisingly, Qiu Ruolan seemed nervous.
Realizing this made Autumn Wind inexplicably flustered as well. The image of meeting Qiu Ruolan at the recording site later that evening flashed before her eyes, causing her to shudder slightly.
In fact, this recording had nothing much to do with Autumn Wind. She spent most of her time among a large group of staff helping Leo carry bags. It was only at the end that she appeared on stage after being styled by jak; it was then that she learned jak was a makeup artist.
Such roles typically don't attract much attention. After finishing the recording, aside from Qiu Ruolan coming over to hug them, the staff were too busy preparing for the next segment to pay any attention.
Taking advantage of a trip to the toilet, Autumn Wind quickly removed her makeup. It wasn't that jak's skills were poor; it was just that Autumn Wind really wasn't used to having her eyelashes applied so dramatically.
Seeing Jak after removing her makeup, Autumn Wind felt a bit disappointed. Jak's displeasure was naturally noticed by Leo. To soothe Jak, Leo said, "Autumn Wind just has thin eyelids; she can't handle good things, not even her eyelashes can hold up!"
Autumn Wind also noticed the change in Jak after her makeup removal and continued Leo's words, "You understand me; I do have thin eyelids. Not only that, but my skin is also thin!"
"You've got some sense, Jak. You picked the wrong partner today. Oh... let me share a secret about Autumn Wind: she's a crybaby. If she doesn't remove her makeup, she'll turn into a black coal later!"
After a few teasing remarks from Leo, Jak's face lit up with a smile.
Autumn Wind awkwardly smiled along; she had to admit that she really was a crybaby.
Once the awkward laughter ended, Autumn Wind suddenly noticed that both Jak and Leo were wearing matching rings on their fingers. She exaggeratedly held their hands but didn't say a word. The three of them were sitting in a café opposite the television station when Jak left his seat to take a phone call. As soon as he left, Leo immediately leaned closer to Autumn Wind in a strange manner. Autumn Wind became alert, "Do you need something?"
Leo lowered his voice, "We're going back to America tomorrow!"
Autumn Wind mocked his pretentious seriousness, "Why act like that? It's not like we're never coming back!"
He forced a smile, "Do you want to know how we spent last night?"
"We? You and Jak? Did you go to Yangmingshan or Sun Moon Lake?" Autumn Wind continued to act relaxed.
Leo's expression turned serious: "What I mean is, me, Jak, and Qiu Mowen!"
At that moment, there were no words more damaging than "Qiu Mowen." Autumn Wind's facade of calmness shattered completely. Almost simultaneously with Leo's words, the crybaby side of her emerged again, and she immediately burst into tears: "He left!"
Leo showed no reaction, looking as if he expected this: "Do you know why he left?"
Autumn Wind hurriedly looked up: "You know? Tell me!"
Leo's voice grew even lower: "Ervin sat in the car next to you all night... I think he must have misunderstood something!"
Countless images began to spread alongside Leo's words. Autumn Wind vaguely remembered feeling some noise beside the car, and a voice suddenly rang in her ear: Qiu Mowen is just as sad as you are.
As soon as this voice emerged, Autumn Wind was immediately drenched in sweat. Accompanied by Qiu Mowen's final embrace, a conclusion she had always hoped for took shape completely. Yet, she couldn't bring herself to believe it.
Autumn Wind looked at Leo, who seemed to see through her thoughts and exaggeratedly nodded at her.
"I think he must be very hurt; his pressure is something you can't imagine!" Leo said with a fatherly expression. "Have you ever thought that you might actually be quite selfish? Emotions are often much more complicated than you believe!" But his calmness quickly faded. "Actually, I have no right to judge you! Even now, I don't have the courage to tell my parents!"
In November, the temperature in Taipei had already begun to drop. Autumn Wind saw hurried passersby outside the glass window; across the street, women dressed provocatively were being lifted into cars like zombies. The wind blew, stirring up a sense of desolation.
Leo did not tell Autumn Wind when he would leave. By the time Autumn Wind contacted him, he was already on a bus heading to Taoyuan International Airport. After Autumn Wind hung up the phone, she immediately received a voice message from Leo.
In the recording, Leo's voice was low, as if pressed down by a stone on his throat, but he deliberately sounded cheerful: "Hi, Autumn Wind, by the time you hear this message, Jak and I will have left Taipei. This may be my last time returning to Taipei. I ultimately cannot escape my family's responsibilities. After returning to America, I will marry the woman chosen by my parents. I don't know if this is a mistake, but I hope you can be happy—at least happier than me! Don't miss out on your love!"
A wave of bittersweet warmth rolled through Autumn Wind's chest, and she could no longer hold back her sorrow; for the first time on the bustling street, she cried.
Just then, Brother Kai's call came in. Autumn Wind, trembling, pondered for a moment at the screen before answering. The voice on the other end was urgent: "Autumn Wind, about your work situation—the company has made arrangements for you to follow Zhou Ringuo, Mr. Zhou, to mainland China!"
Autumn Wind sniffled and asked, "Um, which city specifically?"
"Hangzhou!" replied Brother Kai.
Zhou Ringuo is a musician recently signed by the company. The company helped him secure a season's work as music director on a certain satellite TV station. Although he produced the music for the previous season of that show, with the renewal of his contract, all compensation and commissions were recalculated. To show their importance placed on him, the company decided to assign him an assistant.
"Hangzhou? Well... okay, when do we leave?" At that moment, Autumn Wind was engulfed in immense regret over Qiu Mowen, especially with Leo's words "Don't miss out on your love" echoing in her ears; thus all concerns were cast aside. Staring blankly at the address of Qiu Mowen that Leo had sent her, she couldn't help but start planning to fly directly to find Qiu Mowen.
When Brother Kai asked if Autumn Wind was willing to go to Hangzhou, she naturally equated Hangzhou with Beijing.
"The Taiwan Compatriot Permit hasn't been processed yet; our flight tickets are booked for Saturday. You don’t need to come to the office these days; just pack your things..."
"Um, shouldn't I get to know Mr. Zhou first?" Autumn Wind asked.
"Well... Mr. Zhou is currently on vacation in Europe and probably won't be back until Friday. How about this: you come to the office on Friday to handle the paperwork, and I'll introduce you then!"
Oh, that doesn't seem to comply with company regulations, Autumn Wind thought to herself, but she didn't say much. She seemed to have no extra energy to think about work; her mind was already with Qiu Mowen.
Brother Kai gave Autumn Wind some time to prepare, but it was only while packing her luggage that Autumn Wind remembered she had left something in Liu Jian's car. She called Liu Jian, but there was no answer. Autumn Wind then called Yao Lizhen, but the call was directly forwarded. Autumn Wind scratched her head and, feeling a bit embarrassed, called Yao Mama.
As soon as Yao Mama heard Autumn Wind's voice, her tone brightened by three degrees. "Autumn Wind! When are you coming to visit? You wouldn't believe it—Lizhen took the kids to Korea, and it's just me and the old man at home. So boring! Come over, and I'll make you something delicious!"
Yao Lizhen went to Korea? No wonder her phone was off. "No, no, actually I wanted to ask Sister Li Zhen about something. Let's wait until she comes back!" Autumn Wind initially wanted to ask for Liu Jian's number but ultimately decided against it.
Still, she couldn't help but keep calling Liu Jian. After all, that bag was an LV; it hurt her heart! But she could never get through to Liu Jian.
Forget it. Well, I guess my luggage and this trip are just not meant to be, Autumn Wind consoled herself.
