When Qiu Mowen's computer starts up, it automatically connects to his fae. The moment Autumn Wind logs in, she feels a rush of joy, but slowly that joy fades away, replaced by panic. She fears seeing things she shouldn't and worries that Qiu Mowen might think she is secretly spying on him.
Deciding against it, she shuts down the computer and turns on the TV to continue waiting for Qiu Mowen to return.
Of course, Autumn Wind's wait is not in vain; after work, Qiu Mowen will take her out to eat. In the bustling Wangfujing, they can always find a restaurant that Autumn Wind likes. After all, Beijing's nights are still vibrant and rich.
During dinner, he will serve her food while asking about her plans for the next day. However, Autumn Wind just looks up at him and smiles foolishly.
Autumn Wind asks him, "Why don't you take me to some public events, like introducing me to your new friends in Beijing?"
Qiu Mowen pauses for a moment. "New friends in Beijing?" He furrows his brow. "It seems you don't know any of my friends from Taipei either!"
Autumn Wind bursts into laughter. "Whose friends? Of course I know! I know your company's legal advisor is Wang Shaowu, your assistant secretary is Wang Yaoru, your boss is an old American guy named James, and you have a rival named Wang Kejia who has stolen several projects from you!" Autumn Wind takes a sip of juice, pauses slightly, and blinks at Qiu Mowen.
"Are you curious how I know so much? This isn't made up!" Indeed, what Autumn Wind said is true. She has spent quite a bit of time understanding Qiu Mowen's social circle in Taipei. It's not hard to find out; all you need to do is get to know Wang Yaoru and then mingle at the parties she frequently attends.
Wang Yaoru is quite the gossip; once she has a glass of red wine, company gossip flows endlessly from her lips. Of course, she has some self-awareness and only shares half the story, so knowing a few names from Qiu Mowen's company isn't difficult.
"But these are things that almost everyone knows!" Qiu Mowen reveals a slight smile and looks at Autumn Wind with a teasing gaze. "With just this much, you think you know my friends?"
"Don't be so unconvinced! I also know that your best friend is Luke; you both entered HK together. But unfortunately for him, you stole his girlfriend. However, he didn't hold it against you because he quickly found a new girlfriend who happens to be from a wealthy family..." Autumn Wind trails off because Luke's ex-girlfriend whom Qiu Mowen took away is Chen Shanni. "Not this one! Not this one! This dish is really delicious!" Autumn Wind lowers her head and fills her mouth with food.
The dinner suddenly becomes tasteless.
It's just that Qiu Mowen doesn't always come back on time; however, nothing compares to the end of the year, which leaves a deep impression on Autumn Wind. A whole year's worth of pain has yet to conclude.
On January 1st, the last day of the year, before leaving in the morning, Qiu Mowen looks troubled as he tells Autumn Wind: "The company has arranged a gathering; all employees who haven't gone home are required to celebrate New Year's together, so..."
Autumn Wind lowers her head without saying anything and awkwardly sees him off to the elevator. While waiting for the elevator, she quietly asks him, "Can I go?"
Autumn Wind didn't know whether Qiu Mowen hadn't heard her or was just deliberately ignoring her. Then the elevator doors opened, and he simply smiled at Autumn Wind without saying a word.
This feeling was truly awful, so until the clock struck midnight on January 1st, Autumn Wind couldn't believe that she was alone in Qiu Mowen's apartment in Beijing, celebrating the New Year.
What made Autumn Wind even more unbearable was that Qiu Feng kept sending her cheerful photos of her family celebrating the New Year at the 101 building. Under Qiu Feng's insistence, Yusha and Phoebe also recorded a New Year's greeting for Autumn Wind, their childish voices mixed with sweet nothings from Zhao Jingqi and Xiao Yuan.
This scene of family happiness made Autumn Wind feel increasingly sad.
Just then, Leo called, and the sound of fireworks mixed harmoniously with his cheerful voice: "Happy New Year!"
Autumn Wind weakly responded into the phone, "Yu!"
Leo continued in an excited tone, "You're so ungrateful! After reuniting with Ervin, you forgot all about me. If I hadn't told him, you'd be hiding under the covers making secret calls! Are you two together now? Any celebration plans?"
Autumn Wind lay on the sofa, adjusting herself into a comfortable position before holding the phone to her ear: "No, it's just me!"
Leo laughed heartily: "You're lying! Didn't he bring you back to Beijing?"
He was right; in Autumn Wind's mind, she thought she would spend a happy and fulfilling life with Qiu Mowen in Beijing. But that wasn't the case. The time Qiu Mowen had for her was pitifully short. After his late-night socializing, there was only time to see each other before he left for work in the morning.
At this moment, they were supposed to celebrate the New Year together, yet he was not by her side. The shattering of her expectations triggered an emotional outburst from Autumn Wind, and she shouted into the phone at Leo: "Yes, that's right! I'm in Beijing, and I'm not wearing any clothes in Qiu Mowen's house, but he's not here! Yuknn!" Her voice grew louder until she was almost roaring.
This sudden emotional explosion left Leo on the other end of the line speechless. There were clear sounds of swallowing as he racked his brain for words to calm Autumn Wind down.
After a while, Leo finally spoke with a hint of helplessness: "Oh dear, you're crazy! The temperature in Beijing is insane; don't catch a cold!" Then he hung up.
Autumn Wind let out a long sigh, but her heart continued to rise and fall like a roller coaster. She pulled out a tissue to wipe her eyes and then opened her computer, aimlessly browsing through various information.
At this moment, everyone in the Autumn Wind group was sending New Year wishes. She deliberately checked Qiu Ruolan's page, where two minutes ago, she had posted a selfie. She wasn't wearing any makeup, her eyes fixed on the screen, a tear dropped from the corner of her left eye, while the other eye revealed a hint of loneliness. She wrote beside it: "Alone, thinking of you all!"
That gaze struck Autumn Wind's heart instantly, and tears began to flow from her eyes without her realizing it. When Autumn Wind noticed the tears rolling down to the corner of her mouth, she threw her phone hard onto the sofa and sat back at her computer in a bit of a frenzy. The penguin icon in the bottom right corner of her computer screen kept jumping; upon clicking it, she found a message from Li Gu with a big heart made of roses and the words "happy new year" bouncing beside it.
Autumn Wind sent him a smiley face, and he quickly replied: "So you are here!"
Autumn Wind sent another smiley face but had no words.
Li Gu: "Haven't you received your salary yet?"
"No need, it's quite troublesome for you in Jinan!"
Li Gu: "It's fine, don't be so polite." Then he started to blame Autumn Wind for leaving without saying goodbye. Autumn Wind quietly sat in front of the computer, watching Li Gu send message after message. She gently moved the mouse and sent smiley face icons as a response.
Finally, Li Gu: "Shaolan has gone to Beijing!" Then he emphasized heavily: "She has gone to Beijing to develop her career!"
These words pierced through Autumn Wind like a sword. Her whole body curled up as a voice inside her told her that greater disasters were about to come.
