Leo studies electronic information, so a phone is not a big deal for him.
Thinking of this, Autumn Wind dashed upstairs, burst into her room, and took out a black bag from the low cabinet in front of her bed. She then rushed back down, shoving the paper bag into Leo's arms, saying, "Here!"
The paper bag had gathered some dust, and Leo quickly dodged, exclaiming, "What is this? It's so dirty!" Despite his quick reflexes, he reluctantly held onto the paper bag.
Autumn Wind winked at him with a mysterious look on her face. "Open it and see!"
"A phone? A telescope? What's going on?" Leo frowned, holding one item in each hand and asking in confusion.
"Help me find out who the owner of this phone is!" Autumn Wind said with a hint of a pout. Even without the pout, she was sure Leo wouldn't refuse her; ever since they were young, whenever she asked for something, Leo always found a way to fulfill her requests.
"That's easy! Just turn on the phone, call my number, and you'll know the Number. Then take that Number to the information shop to find out who it belongs to!" Leo said confidently as he pressed the power button. After pressing for a while without success— the phone was dead!
"Find a charger and charge it!" Leo shrugged at Autumn Wind, blinking to indicate she should bring him a charger.
"I don't have one! Besides, this phone's Number won't show any incoming calls!" Autumn Wind replied helplessly. She patted Leo on the shoulder and said, "This little task is up to you! Wow, it's so late already; I need to go to sleep!" She stretched her body.
As if talking to Leo, or perhaps just talking to herself, she said, "Should I go upstairs and say goodnight to Fish? It's really troublesome!" She playfully winked at Leo.
Leo smiled lightly, pretending he didn't hear what Autumn Wind said and focused intently on studying the phone.
After Autumn Wind went upstairs, she didn't immediately go to bed. Instead, she pressed her ear against the door to listen for sounds outside. Until drowsiness hit her, she still hadn't heard Leo come upstairs.
The next morning.
Before dawn broke, Fish knocked on Autumn Wind's door while holding the still-sleeping Oke. Groggily, Autumn Wind got out of bed and opened the door to let in Fish Mother and Child. Fish had already done her makeup, but the thick foundation couldn't hide her dark circles; her bloodshot eyes hinted that she hadn't slept well all night.
She wore a thin knee-length dress with a huge sparkling bow pinned in her short hair, completely lacking her usual competence and sharpness, giving off a cute and charming vibe.
She placed Oke cautiously on the bed, her voice a bit hoarse, "Sister Liu hasn't gotten up yet, let him sleep here with you for now!" Not daring to look at Autumn Wind, her gaze remained fixed on Oke.
"You, what about you?" Autumn Wind asked anxiously.
Fish's hand gently brushed against Oke's face, a low sob escaping her lips, "I have to go to work today; the production team is going on location, and I need to leave early!"
Autumn Wind had been on location with Qiu Feng before and knew how tough it could be. She stepped forward and took Fish's hand, "Don't work so hard; let's find another job, okay?"
Finally unable to hold back her tears, they fell down like rain, landing on the back of Autumn Wind's hand and on Oke's face. Before it could spread completely, Fish lifted her head, facing the floral board, trying to control her tears.
Releasing Autumn Wind's hand, she casually grabbed a tissue from the bedside and gently wiped the corners of her eyes. "It's fine; it's just a bit tiring. It will be better in a few days. Please take good care of Oke for me; I'll thank you properly when I come back tonight..." With that, she rushed out the door.
Her hand rested on the doorknob but then paused. "Um, please help me entertain Leo..." Her voice turned choked again. Without waiting for Autumn Wind to respond, she opened the door and dashed out.
The sound of the iron gate opening echoed in the courtyard, followed by the sound of a car starting, then silence fell.
Autumn Wind lay weakly beside Oke and unknowingly drifted back to sleep.
A pair of hands gently patted Autumn Wind's face. When she opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was Oke's glass-like eyes. "Auntie, Auntie, Oke wants to see Grandma!" Oke's childish voice rang out.
Autumn Wind was startled and propped herself up; this wasn't a dream! How could Oke be in my room? She patted her head and remembered that Fish had come to her room early in the morning.
Rubbing her eyes, she picked up Oke and walked toward the door, kissing his face repeatedly. "Oke, be good; I'll make you some milk! Sister Liu! Sister Liu! Make milk for Oke!" She opened the door and called out loudly for Sister Liu.
But she collided with Leo, who was about to knock on her door. He held the phone she had given him last night in his hand. "Got it done!" he said confidently as he shoved the phone into Autumn Wind's hands and smoothly took Oke from her.
"What’s going on? Did you find anything?" closely following behind Leo, the voice pressed for answers.
"Nothing much, just that this phone has only made two calls, one to you and the other to someone unknown!" Leo raised Oke high, "Fly, fly!"
"The other one is the landline from the villa!" Autumn Wind said, "What about the owner of this number? No name?"
"I can only find out about the number; as for the owner, we probably have to go to the service center to know!" Leo replied. Sister Liu brought over a bottle, and Oke greedily started sucking on it. Leo's gaze shifted from Oke to Autumn Wind's face, "Is this number really important to you?"
"No!" Autumn Wind pursed her lips, noticing Leo's disbelieving look, so she added, "It's complicated! Once you're done with your business, I'll tell you!" She crossed her arms, deep in thought. Who could it be?
"Oh, right!" Leo frowned as he recalled something, lowering his voice, "There was a voice changer on the call!"
A voice changer?
"Of course, saying it was a voice changer is a bit exaggerated; it's like the microphones you handle when recording variety shows!" Leo added, his eyes fixed on Autumn Wind like a hawk. "Are you sure you don’t need my help with anything else?"
Shaking her head lightly and feigning calmness, she said, "No need!" Yet inside, her heart was in turmoil. This meant that the owner of that aged voice was not an old woman. Why would she want to hide her voice? Could it be? Could it be someone I know? Or someone whose voice I’ve heard before?
As this thought crossed her mind, a cold sweat broke out on Autumn Wind's back! Who could it be?
...
Before she knew it, time had crept close to noon. Under the pretense of fostering father-son bonding, Leo wanted to take Oke out to play. Autumn Wind felt uneasy and asked Uncle Liu to drive them out.
Just as Leo left, Qiu Hai called. The noise around him was chaotic.
"Where are you?" Autumn Wind asked softly, a wave of inexplicable unease washing over her.
Qiu Hai cleared his throat and spoke slowly, "I, I'm at the airport. Something suddenly came up in the mainland, and I need to handle it!"
Something happened in the mainland market? But isn't Qiu Hai the chairman? Shouldn't this be Liu Jian's responsibility?
"You're going to the mainland? But... oh, is it urgent?" Autumn Wind wanted to ask more but swallowed her words instead, switching to a gentle tone as she reminded him, "Please take care of yourself!"
"Yeah, I was planning to take some time to be with you today, but..." His voice carried endless disappointment. "By the way, I'll be back at the latest by then. Leo will..."
"Should still be in Taipei..." Autumn Wind replied softly, her unease becoming increasingly evident, like rising tides crashing against the shore with a sound of "whoosh."
"Don't worry, I'll be back soon! Ah, I have to board now. I'll call you when I arrive! Mwah!" The announcement sounded, and Autumn Wind kissed the microphone before hurriedly hanging up.
"I..." Autumn Wind's words got stuck in her throat. What surprised her even more was that the earlier unease had vanished in an instant. In its place was a sense of loss.
She suddenly began to miss the feeling of secretly watching from the window, the tension and thrill of wanting to see just a little bit more.
As the plane took off, Qiu Hai put on his eye mask and reflected on everything that had happened from last night until now.
There hadn't actually been any video conference last night; he had only made a phone call to Liu Jian from his study.
At the beginning of the call, it was extremely awkward—so awkward that they exchanged simple pleasantries right after answering.
Just as Qiu Hai decided to hang up, another phone rang for Liu Jian.
Liu Jian did not hang up the phone with Qiu Hai and directly picked up another line. A few seconds later, Liu Jian's surprised voice reached Qiu Hai's ears, "What? The franchisee over there wants to lower the franchise fee! Are we short on supplies? That's absolutely impossible! Who was responsible for it before? Ervin?" Liu Jian mentioned Qiu Mowen's name, and his tone suddenly calmed down, "Oh, okay, I understand... I will get back to you with a solution as soon as possible!"
After hanging up that call, Liu Jian let out a long sigh and picked up the phone he had used to talk to Qiu Hai. "Hello, did you hear everything that just happened?" His tone was no longer as restrained as at the beginning, as if nothing had happened.
"Mm!" Qiu Hai replied.
"The mainland market has always been handled by Ervin, and later by James. After James left, it has been directly managed by the headquarters!" Liu Jian spoke lightly, "Almost everyone familiar with that business in the company has left! Do you think we should hold a Board of Directors meeting tomorrow..."
"No need!" Liu Jian's calm tone completely eased Qiu Hai's heart. "I will personally go to the mainland market tomorrow!"
"But you?" Based on what Liu Jian knew, Qiu Hai had less experience dealing with HK than he did. After all, when Qiu Mowen was alive, he had served as Qiu Mowen's personal assistant.
"Don't trust me?" Qiu Hai smiled lightly. "Tomorrow morning I will fly to Beijing..."
Liu Jian wanted to speak up to stop him; a selfish thought arose that perhaps it would be a good thing for Qiu Hai to leave. "Alright, I will arrange for someone to book your flight ticket right away!" Joy surged in his heart.
Qiu Hai agreed and then hung up the phone.
