Auspicious asked the doorman if Ruyi was in the residence. If she was, she wanted to be informed, as she wished to see Ruyi.
The doorman looked at Auspicious and no longer wore his usual smile. He huffed and simply said, "Wait."
Auspicious glared at the doorman in anger but said nothing. She felt a bit worried, thinking that the servants of wealthy families were often opportunistic. When Ruyi was favored, they would smile at her; if Ruyi was in trouble, she would also be treated poorly. The doorman's cold demeanor today made her wonder if something had happened to Ruyi.
Nervously, Auspicious twisted the hem of her clothes and tried to engage another doorman in conversation. However, that doorman glanced at her with disdain, snorted, and turned away. This only confirmed Auspicious's fears that something had happened to Ruyi. She was anxious to rush inside but feared being beaten. She thought about leaving but was uncertain about the situation inside and worried about offending Ruyi. She could only stand there, pacing in circles.
After a while, the doorman returned, followed by a woman who had a stern expression. She told Auspicious to come in.
Trembling with fear, Auspicious followed her. She recognized this woman as Aunt Jiang, who served Su Yuanchun, the legitimate wife of Gao Zhengping. She thought that something must have indeed gone wrong with Ruyi, otherwise, why would Aunt Jiang come out to fetch her? Usually, it would be one of Ruyi's maids who would come for her. Su Yuanchun and Ruyi had always been at odds; her coming to see Ruyi and sending someone else to fetch her was not a good sign!
Trying to curry favor, Auspicious complimented Aunt Jiang a few times and then asked why she had come to fetch her, criticizing the maids around Ruyi for being lazy—this was her way of subtly inquiring about Ruyi's situation.
Aunt Jiang sneered and said, "Don't mention that Xie Concubine. There will be no such person in our Gao family anymore; it's embarrassing to even speak of it! To live a good life and then disgracefully seek one's own demise—does she really think our Gao family is easy to deceive? You are that Xie Ruyi's sister; although you may not have much say in matters, I’ll give you a hint today so you know our Gao family is not one that cannot distinguish right from wrong!"
Listening to this left Auspicious confused; she didn't understand what had happened. However, one thing was clear: Ruyi had done something that greatly displeased the Gao family or had sought her own demise! Terrified, she thought about what this foolish Ruyi was doing. Last time she visited, she was still favored; how could things have changed so drastically that even a servant dared to insult her?
Feeling dizzy and overwhelmed, Auspicious followed Aunt Jiang, eventually arriving at a courtyard that seemed desolate and sparsely inhabited. Weeds grew between the bluestone bricks, the window paper of the house was torn, and there was a jujube tree in the yard where a person was tied up. The person appeared bloodied and slumped over as if unconscious. Upon entering the courtyard, Auspicious immediately noticed this person and trembled in fear before realizing there were others present.
In the courtyard stood several people: both Gao Zhengping and Su Yuanchun. They stood together—one looking furious and the other mocking. They were staring at a woman on the ground who had her hands bound behind her back, disheveled hair falling over her face as she sobbed pitifully.
Hearing the woman's voice, which belonged to Ruyi, Auspicious gasped and rushed over to help her up. Upon seeing Ruyi, whose once delicate pink-white face was now bruised and bloodied with tears streaming down her cheeks, she confirmed it was indeed her sister. Seeing how severely she had been treated made her realize something: could it be that this sister of hers had been involved with that man tied up in the tree?
Ruyi saw Auspicious and her eyes widened in surprise. "Sister, what are you doing here?!"
Ruyi always felt that she was living a much better life than Auspicious, standing tall in front of her. She never expected that her most embarrassing moment would be witnessed by Auspicious, which made her feel ashamed. However, thinking about her current situation, she was relieved that Auspicious had come. With family present, she would at least receive less punishment and wouldn't be beaten to death without anyone to stop it.
"Sister, you have to save me! I've been framed! You must help me!"
"Oh? Framed? The person has already been caught, and you're still claiming to be framed? Do you think we're all fools?" Su Yuanchun held a handkerchief to her nose with a look of disdain and turned to Gao Zhengping. "Sir, this shameless woman still refuses to admit it. We can't let someone like her stay; it would make our Su family a laughingstock. Someone saw us catch her just now; we can't hide this."
Gao Zhengping's face darkened. "Scratch her face and give her thirty lashes, then throw her out of the Gao Family! From now on, anyone who dares to take this shameless woman in will be against the Gao Family!"
Ruyi screamed for mercy, terrified of being thrown out and even more afraid of having her face disfigured. Without her looks, what hope would she have left? But no matter how much she pleaded, two burly women came over, lifted her up, and placed her on a nearby bench, tying her up and gagging her.
Auspicious was so shocked that she couldn't move. It wasn't until Ruyi's face was slashed several times with a silver hairpin by one of the women, blood streaming down, that she snapped back to reality. She cried out and lunged forward to stop them but was pushed to the ground by one of the women, causing her to cry out in pain.
Su Yuanchun said to Auspicious, "Thank you, Auspicious. Your sister is so bold; as a concubine of the Gao Family, she had an affair with a man and was caught red-handed. She is one of us; committing such disgraceful acts deserves death or being drowned in a pig cage without anyone daring to say anything. Showing her mercy by sparing her life is already a great act of kindness from the Gao Family; don't be ungrateful! Just watch from the side; otherwise, you'll be punished too!"
Su Yuanchun had had enough of Ruyi's arrogance these days. Although she was the main wife, Ruyi was favored and often secretly mocked her for being unable to bear children, which left a scar in her heart.
Auspicious was so frightened that she didn't dare move. At this moment, Ruyi had already received lashes from Su Yuanchun's people. They showed no mercy; the sound of the board hitting flesh was terrifying. Soon blood began to flow profusely on the ground, creating a large puddle that looked alarming. Ruyi had already fainted. Auspicious thought that if she were being hit with boards like this, there wouldn't be so much blood flowing. Suddenly an idea flashed through her mind; she screamed and lunged forward.
"Stop hitting her! What if Ruyi is pregnant? Please stop!"
At this shout, the woman striking stopped and looked at Su Yuanchun and Gao Zhengping.
Gao Zhengping's expression changed slightly. Su Yuanchun immediately said beside him, "Even if there is one, who knows whose it is?" Upon hearing this, Gao Zhengping's face darkened again. He waved his sleeve and said, "After it's done, throw it out the back door. Don't dirty the front door!" After saying that, he was about to leave. Su Yuanchun asked how to deal with the man, and Gao Zhengping replied that he should be thrown out as well. After all, he had already dealt with that person; he figured that man wouldn't even dare to think about touching his own wife in the future!
Su Yuanchun smiled with satisfaction, thinking that he had finally kicked Ruyi out!
Ruyi was thus thrown out of the Gao Family, and Auspicious was also driven out at the same time. Once they were outside, she finally saw the man's face and realized it was Gao Dalang from Shangqiao Village! Auspicious thought this was truly unfortunate. She kicked Gao Dalang a few times in anger and looked at Ruyi with disdain. Still, she went out to call for a carriage, took out all the money she had on her, and promised additional payment later before getting the driver to help lift the person into the carriage and take her to the medical clinic.
