"Thud!" The beggar knelt down before Ling Mo Xie and pleaded, "Seventh Young Master, please, let the Ling Family of Skywind City save us!"
"Huh, what exactly is going on? Tell me!" Ling Mo Xie crossed his arms and looked at the beggar, saying, "Besides, I don't seem to recognize you!"
"Young Master, I... I have been timid since childhood and didn't dare to offend you, so you haven't seen me, but I am a member of the Ling Family!" The beggar quickly clung to Ling Mo Xie's leg.
"Let go!" A glint flashed in Ling Mo Xie's eyes as he coldly said, "Just tell me directly what happened. What happened to Maple Town and the Ling Family?"
"Y-yes!" The beggar swallowed hard and quickly released Ling Mo Xie's leg, truly appearing as timid as he claimed.
"It’s like this. Do you remember Miss Zhou Xinyi, who often played with you? Her family was... was wiped out overnight." The beggar knelt on the ground and looked up at Ling Mo Xie.
"I know; wasn't that over a decade ago?" Ling Mo Xie shrugged, his expression unchanged, though a thoughtful look crossed his brow.
"Just a few days after Miss Zhou Xinyi returned! A group of men in black attacked the Ling Family and kidnapped Miss Zhou Xinyi. Her mother was killed while trying to protect her. Those men in black didn’t spare us either; anyone who resisted was killed, and the rest had their cultivation crippled and were driven out. The Ling Mansion was also burned down. We have no resources left and lost our cultivation... this is why..."
"Hmph? You’ve become a beggar? What a disgrace to the Ling Family. People like you won’t receive much help from the Old Man," Ling Mo Xie scoffed mockingly as he continued the beggar's words.
Then he turned to leave without looking back and said, "I've understood this matter. I will inform the Old Man; as for how he deals with you, that's no longer my concern."
"Thank you, Seventh Young Master! Thank you, Seventh Young Master!" The beggar exclaimed in surprise behind Ling Mo Xie.
"Hey, isn't this your family member? How can you treat him like that? At least there's some kinship there," Hong Chi said, following Ling Mo Xie. He hadn't spoken in front of the beggar earlier but now pouted at Ling Mo Xie.
"Hehe, what if it’s someone who treats you poorly? Should you unconditionally help them just because of a relationship?" Ling Mo Xie smiled and patted Hong Chi on the head.
"Perhaps some gentlemen would let bygones be bygones, but I'm not a gentleman. I only know how to treat those who treat me well even better. As for those who treat me poorly, they naturally don't deserve any kindness from me."
"Oh!" Hong Chi nodded and looked up to ask, "So where are we going now? The place you wanted to go has already been destroyed, right?"
"Mm!" Ling Mo Xie slightly tilted his head back, squinting at the sunlight. His palms clenched tightly; Zhou Xinyi had indeed encountered trouble. But what could he do?
The deadline for challenging the Heavenly Ranking was approaching; all he could do now was search for clues at the former Ling Mansion and then find her after the challenge.
"Let's go to Ling Mansion. I want to look for clues." Ling Mo Xie smiled at Hong Chi, released his hand, and walked toward the direction of Ling Mansion.
"Hmm?" Ling Mo Xie frowned and turned to look behind him, but all he saw were common people moving about, with street vendors shouting on both sides.
No suspicious individuals? But just now, he clearly felt someone was watching him. Could it be that his instincts were wrong?
It couldn't be, right? He was already at Level Fifty-One, which was equivalent to the mid-stage of Fasting.
His six senses were sharp; he shouldn't be mistaken. After all, the cultivation level of the Fasting Period was considered top-tier among the younger generation in Skywind City, with Yuwen Qingyu only at this level as well.
"What's wrong?" Hong Chi, holding Ling Mo Xie's hand, noticed that he had stopped and turned to ask him.
"Oh, it's nothing!" Ling Mo Xie smiled and turned back to continue walking toward Ling Mansion.
Before long, they arrived at the most prosperous area of Maple Town, where the former Ling Mansion was located.
However, what lay before Ling Mo Xie was indeed a desolate ruin.
Moreover, the destruction was thorough; a large area that once housed magnificent buildings was now covered in rubble, with not a single standing pillar left.
The debris was dark and scattered with some charred wooden blocks. It seemed that those so-called black-clad individuals had used powerful magic to destroy Ling Mansion before setting it ablaze.
Ling Mo Xie's lips curled into a smile.
It shouldn't be a very strong force because for powers much stronger than Skywind City's Ling Family, they wouldn't need to go through such trouble.
They could simply kill and run without fear of being pursued; there would be no need to destroy evidence so completely.
The entire street was quiet as Ling Mo Xie and Hong Chi stood before what used to be the luxurious mansion's entrance. Even the plaque was gone, leaving only a large piece of charred wood. The exotic beasts that once guarded the door were shattered and scattered like irregular stones.
"Your family is really big!" Hong Chi exclaimed as he looked at the vast expanse of ruins. There was even an artificial river inside, broken into several small lakes by the massive rubble.
"Come out! Is it fun being a tail?" Ling Mo Xie said mysteriously without answering Hong Chi's comment.
Just as Hong Chi was feeling puzzled, a fiery figure named Ying Er jumped out from a nearby yard of Ling Mansion, hands on her hips, and said, "I didn't expect you, coward who only knows how to run away, to have some skills! You actually noticed me!"
"Hehe!" Ling Mo Xie chuckled softly, lowering his head. "Oh dear, my memory isn't very good. Hong Chi, quickly tell me, which one was it that ran away on the main road to Maple Town just now?"
"It was this sister, what’s wrong?" Hong Chi looked up innocently at Ling Mo Xie.
Ling Mo Xie squinted his eyes in a smile; truly, he was proud of his Celestial Servant.
"You two!" Sun Xiaoxiao glared angrily at Ling Mo Xie and Hong Chi, who was playing along with him. Her face turned red with rage as Spiritual Energy surged around her. The spear in her hand emitted a blinding white light, and a silver flash shot toward Ling Mo Xie.
"Clang!" Ling Mo Xie instantly pulled out a red-quality Longsword from his backpack and activated the skill Glimpse of the Stunning Swan.
Sun Xiaoxiao's spear was instantly sent flying, embedding itself into the cobblestone street, the tail still trembling.
"Oh, your spear is not bad!" Ling Mo Xie put away the Longsword, which had developed cracks on its blade; it could still be used once more!
"However! Even if you disregard me, don't you see there's a little child here? What if he gets hurt? That's really naughty!" Ling Mo Xie transformed into a flicker of flame and appeared behind the stunned Sun Xiaoxiao, giving her a playful slap on her rounded backside.
