Ling Mo Xie could no longer bear to watch the scene unfold. Was this family truly cursed by the god of misfortune?
"Boom!" With a swift strike of his sword, Ling Mo Xie shattered all the spells directed at them, causing the attacking civilians to freeze in shock.
"Speak! What is going on here? Zeng Zhou, why were you captured by the Azure Emperor's people?" Ling Mo Xie coldly addressed the surrounding civilians. It seemed that Zeng Zhou's capture was not merely due to bad luck or being noticed by the Azure Emperor's followers.
The civilians snapped back to reality at Ling Mo Xie's harsh inquiry. One of them, seemingly unconcerned, replied, "Who do you think you are? I advise you not to meddle in our affairs. Just because you have some cultivation doesn't mean you can do anything to us."
The others glanced at Ling Mo Xie but ignored him, turning to Zeng Zhou instead. "We owe you an apology, but we are doing this for our survival. You should leave here quickly!"
"Why? Why are you treating me like this?" Zeng Zhou exclaimed in disbelief, his eyes wide as he questioned those around him.
"Why? Hmph, what else could it be? The Azure Emperor's people said that as long as we offer one person for their experiments, they will distribute spirit stones and elixirs to us to aid our cultivation and combat resentment. Isn't that a good deal?" sneered one civilian who had never gotten along with Zeng Zhou.
Zeng Zhou looked at the other civilians, but they turned away and remained silent, only repeating, "You should leave here quickly!"
Not only could Ling Mo Xie not stand it any longer, but even Bai Yunfei beside him was fed up. He moved like a gust of wind and instantly struck out, producing a series of sharp "slap!" sounds throughout the area.
In an instant, Bai Yunfei returned to Ling Mo Xie's side, while those surrounding them bore two red swollen handprints on their faces!
"Hmph! I cannot tolerate these shameless and ungrateful people!" Bai Yunfei scoffed quietly.
Ling Mo Xie narrowed his eyes and smirked slightly. "That beating probably won't wake them up!"
As soon as Ling Mo Xie's words fell, those who had been stunned by Bai Yunfei's strikes suddenly regained their senses, their eyes blazing with fury as they glared at Bai Yunfei and Ling Mo Xie.
"You two ungrateful brats dare to lay hands on us? Brothers, charge!" shouted one fierce-looking civilian as he waved his hand. The other civilians rallied loudly and rushed toward Ling Mo Xie and Bai Yunfei.
Countless spells flew toward them like dazzling fireworks.
Bai Yunfei was momentarily stunned, then spoke with an unprecedented coldness, "Boss, you're right. These people can't be awakened just by hitting them!"
As he said this, Bai Yunfei placed the Young Lady child he was holding onto the ground for Zeng Zhou to watch over and prepared to take action.
Zeng Zhou opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, but after glancing at the ferocious civilians rushing towards them, he ultimately said nothing. He stepped back with the Young Lady child and stood to the side.
"What the ancients said is indeed true: 'In impoverished mountains and treacherous waters, cunning people arise.' Although these individuals did not come from such places, they are not far off," Ling Mo Xie sighed as he looked at the fierce and savage civilians. Meanwhile, his thoughts had already shifted to the skill names, and the Panlong Sword was already in his hand.
"Glance of the Surprised Swan," "Tiger Descending the Mountain," "Flying Immortal's Sword," ... These civilians were at the bottom of the Cultivation World, with low cultivation levels and few spells. Although the sheer number of overlapping spells made it seem somewhat intimidating, their power was not very great.
With a few skills unleashed, those civilians surrounding them fell one by one like wheat being cut down.
Watching Ling Mo Xie continuously unleash his skills, Bai Yunfei saw that the civilians in front of him were also falling easily, and their speed increased even more. It was only when dealing with these low-level opponents that his speed and attack power could be maximized.
In just a few moments, the ground was left in disarray, with countless civilians lying on the ground moaning. Although they were not dead, their injuries were severe.
Ling Mo Xie glanced coldly at these people. Damn it! These cunning folks really were unbearable; he felt no regret for what he had done.
On Earth, doing this would surely land him in prison, but in this world of cultivation, such actions were considered merciful.
The people here understood well that wildfires cannot be extinguished completely; they will sprout again with spring winds. Anyone who offended them would be killed if possible to avoid future troubles.
Those who couldn't be killed still needed to be kept under constant watch.
"Let's go check on your wife. I have a bad feeling," Ling Mo Xie said as he sheathed the Panlong Sword and addressed Zeng Zhou.
Bai Yunfei nodded and pointed at the moaning civilians on the ground. With neighbors like these, even a big man like Zeng Zhou... let alone his wife being home alone.
Hearing Mo Xie's words, Zeng Zhou suddenly snapped out of his sadness over his friends' betrayal and anxiously muttered, "Yes! Yes! We need to go back and check! I wonder if they’ve done anything to her?"
With a worried expression on his face, he began to comfort himself, saying, "They... they said that if any of us died, the others would take care of their family. She should be fine, she should be fine."
Mo Xie looked at Zeng Zhou and sighed, shaking his head. Seeing these treacherous people without a hint of regret for their wrongdoings, how could they possibly care for his family as Zeng Zhou claimed?
Mo Xie didn’t say anything to discourage Zeng Zhou. He already understood the inherent flaws of humanity from his time on Earth, and in the Cultivation World, these flaws were magnified infinitely by those in power.
Mo Xie remained silent and gestured for Bai Yunfei to carry the Young Lady's child while he himself walked towards the tent that Zeng Zhou had been observing earlier.
Zeng Zhou followed behind in a daze, stumbling as they quickly arrived at the dilapidated tent.
Inside the tent, it was eerily quiet with no sounds at all. The cool breeze stirred the tent, causing the entrance curtain to flutter slightly in the wind, adding to the silence.
Zeng Zhou stepped heavily to the front of the tent and tremblingly lifted the curtain.
"There's... there's no one! Everything is gone!" Zeng Zhou murmured, his eyes filled with despair.
Mo Xie quickly patted Zeng Zhou's shoulder. "We still don’t know what happened! Don’t panic; maybe..." Mo Xie paused. He really couldn’t bring himself to say comforting words to his friend. In his mind, Zeng Zhou's wife had likely met with misfortune as well.
