"Ding! Congratulations, you have triggered the Divine Pet Quest! Please check the content of the Task yourself!"
Ling Mo Xie was a bit confused upon hearing this voice. He hadn't done anything, so how could he trigger a Task? However, having completed quite a few Tasks already, Ling Mo Xie wasn't overly surprised. He directly opened the Mission Board to check the Task.
Divine Pet Quest: Please collect a total of twelve types of Heavenly Level Incense.
Task Time Limit: 3 years.
Task Reward: Recognition by a Divine Beast.
Task Penalty: No penalty for failure.
Task Tips: Incense is an offering to the gods, but nowadays, cultivators in the Cultivation World act recklessly, defying heaven and earth, and showing disrespect to the deities. Therefore, the twelve types of divine incense with special effects have long been lost to legend, but there may still be remnants in the High-Level Secret Realm.
"High-Level Secret Realm?" Ling Mo Xie murmured. Isn't a secret realm just a Copy? This means he would have to enter a Copy, and it had to be a high-level one at that! And he needed twelve types!
It seemed that this Divine Beast was not so easy to obtain; it looked like it would take some time to complete.
Recognizing the situation, Ling Mo Xie closed the Task interface, yawned, and continued to sleep.
After all, three days is quite a long time; how else could he pass the time without sleeping? For other Cultivators, it might just be a casual practice session, but for Ling Mo Xie, sitting still was not an option—fighting monsters and leveling up was much more effective!
While Ling Mo Xie leisurely slept here, outside, various major forces were stirred up upon learning about the incident with Shen Yan.
What? A little spirit beast that even experts at the Combination realm couldn't sense any fluctuations of Spiritual Energy from could actually speak! This was completely beyond their understanding!
Such a miraculous occurrence must either be due to exceptional bloodlines or high cultivation!
With such a spirit beast, Ling Mo Xie could not possibly be as simple as he appeared to be as a member of the Ling family! This led to thoughts about Ling Mo Xie's father, Ling Li Yun, and how Ling Mo Xie had previously been regarded as useless but had suddenly risen to prominence.
Everyone felt that Ling Mo Xie was definitely more complex than he seemed on the surface, and there must be someone backing him! Perhaps Ling Li Yun had left him a powerful mentor?
They were aware of Ling Mo Xie's cultivation level, so they ruled out the possibility that he had captured this spirit beast himself. Since Chen Yan had only recently appeared, they also dismissed the idea that Ling Li Yun had prepared it long ago; after all, spirit beasts are not something that can be easily prepared in advance.
Since Chen Yan followed Ling Mo Xie, they automatically assumed that Chen Yan had already recognized him as its master.
This was also due to their misconceptions; although spirit beasts are generally milder than demon beasts, they have always been incompatible with humans unless a master-servant contract is established.
Various factions sent spies to investigate what kind of race Chen Yan belonged to and who was backing Ling Mo Xie. At the same time, their attitude toward the State of Youyun became ambiguous, especially since almost everyone had a dossier on Ling Mo Xie.
This was also because of the praise Ling Mo Xie received from the leader of the Dao Sect last time; naturally, they wanted to look into this suddenly emerging talent.
Thus, they learned that Ling Mo Xie was a member of the Ling family from Tianfeng City in Youyun State, with a father who was once legendary but now missing, and that he had connections with the royal family of Youyun State.
Therefore, their attitude toward Youyun State naturally needed to change.
At Azure Emperor Sect, Shangguan Ying Er returned to the sect after a period of training according to her master's instructions. Upon her return, she saw disciples flocking toward the mission hall.
After stopping someone to ask, she learned that the mission hall had actually issued a task to eliminate soldiers from Fengqian Country. Each soldier in the Enlightenment stage was worth ten contribution points.
This was an incredible opportunity for both outer and inner disciples.
Contribution points at Azure Emperor Sect were hard to earn; typical missions involved killing demon beasts, capturing spirit beasts, or searching for spiritual herbs, which were quite challenging.
However, eliminating soldiers from Fengqian Country was different. As long as they teamed up with a few others, they could easily wipe out a small squad within Fengqian's ranks.
"What is going on? Didn't the Sect Leader say before that we shouldn't meddle in worldly affairs?" Shangguan Ying'er muttered to herself, walking towards her master's courtyard. After finishing her training, she needed to report the situation.
Upon arriving at her master's serene courtyard, she found her master already waiting at the entrance, as if he had anticipated her arrival.
Before Shangguan Ying'er could speak, her master said, "The Sect Leader is looking for you. Come with me!"
"Master, what is it about?" Shangguan Ying'er asked, puzzled as she followed her master along the path.
"You know Ling Mo Xie, right?" Her master paused slightly at her question and turned to ask.
"Yes? What happened? Did something happen to him?" Hearing her master mention Ling Mo Xie, Shangguan Ying'er was taken aback and spoke with a hint of urgency.
Her master glanced at her skeptically before slowly saying, "What could happen to him? Recently, he has become quite famous in our southeastern region. Not only has he received praise from the leader of the Daoist sect, but he has also been awarded the Dao Token. He is truly riding high!"
"Is that so?" Upon hearing her master's words, Shangguan Ying'er looked somewhat stunned and then sighed, realizing that despite being a direct disciple of one of the three major sects of the State of Youyun, she still couldn't compare to him!
"Let's go. This matter seems to be related to him as well."
Shangguan Ying'er listened and, though she was filled with curiosity, quickened her pace to follow her master into the main hall of the Azure Emperor Sect.
"Junior Sister, you've arrived!" The Sect Leader, dressed simply in blue robes and seated high above, greeted Shangguan Ying'er's master with a smile as he stood up.
"Yes! Just tell me what it is. Don't think about sending my disciple on any dangerous missions!" Shangguan Ying'er's master was not one to give face to the Sect Leader; he spoke coldly with a hint of warning in his tone.
The Sect Leader was unfazed and smiled back. He had long since grown accustomed to Shangguan Ying'er's master's temperament and did not take offense. He got straight to the point without beating around the bush.
"You've heard about Ling Mo Xie, who has been making waves lately, right? I heard that Ying'er has some connections with him?"
"Yes! Master, what is it?" Shangguan Ying'er asked eagerly, realizing it was indeed about Ling Mo Xie.
Hearing Shangguan Ying'er's affirmative response, the Sect Leader's smile brightened even more, but he did not directly answer her question. Instead, he said, "Ying'er, since you've returned, your training should be coming to a close. Would you like to go out for a bit?"
Shangguan Ying'er smiled helplessly at the Sect Leader's words. She glanced at her master, maintaining a dignified smile, and said, "Master, if you have something to say, please just say it directly. Otherwise, my master might get angry!"
"Ahem!" The Sect Leader glanced at Shangguan Ying'er's master and seemed to ponder something before nodding and saying, "Alright, I'll be straightforward. I see that Ling Mo Xie is quite the talented young man. Such a genius is not something our Azure Emperor Sect lacks vision for; naturally, we should extend an olive branch. So, this task will be entrusted to you!"
Shangguan Ying'er was taken aback. "What do you want me to do?"
"Not much, really. Just go back to Ling Mo Xie's side and try to win him over. It would be great if he could join our Azure Emperor Sect!" the Sect Leader explained to Shangguan Ying'er.
Shangguan Ying'er furrowed her brows. Winning him over? Sigh! For some reason, she felt uneasy about it and was not happy.
In the past, she had befriended him solely because of his Alchemy skills without any ulterior motives; it felt comfortable that way. If she were now trying to befriend him just to win him over, it felt very awkward.
"By the way, Ling Mo Xie was previously penniless but has suddenly risen to prominence and received honors that many geniuses his age cannot attain. It’s likely that things are not as simple as they appear on the surface. What I mean is, you could try to investigate a bit," the Sect Leader seemed unaware of Shangguan Ying'er's thoughts and continued instructing her.
"Can't someone else do it?" Shangguan Ying'er suddenly spoke up.
"No! You are the best choice for this task. Now go prepare!" The Sect Leader appeared particularly firm on this matter and waved his hand dismissively.
"Master..." Shangguan Ying'er wanted to say something more but was interrupted by her own master: "Alright, Ying'er, don't be rude!"
Shangguan Ying'er looked at the Sect Leader who had returned to his seat and then at her master, feeling dejected as she followed her master out.
"Master, is this decision too hasty? Perhaps Ling Mo Xie has no backing at all. Ling Liyun has already become a thing of the past; even though he once made a name for himself across the continent, he can no longer provide any help for his son. Is it really worth our effort to win him over?"
Just after Shangguan Ying'er and her master left, a figure emerged from behind the main hall; it was the Grand Elder of the Azure Emperor Sect.
"Who knows? A person like Ling Li Yun is someone we can only look up to. Who knows what kind of legacy such a person would leave for their descendants? Moreover, although Ling Li Yun has disappeared, what about his friends?"
"If Ling Mo Xie truly has someone like that behind him, he wouldn't need much help. Just a glance at our Azure Emperor Sect or a casual remark could elevate us to new heights!"
The Sect Leader of the Azure Emperor Sect sat on his throne and said calmly, "Furthermore, we have an elder in our sect who has a grudge against Ling Mo Xie. You know what that means? Without my instruction, he will also go investigate whether there are any powerful figures behind Ling Mo Xie."
"Are you... giving up on him?" The Grand Elder looked at the Sect Leader in surprise and asked.
"Giving up on whom? If there really is someone behind Ling Mo Xie, what can I do to protect him? And if there is no one behind Ling Mo Xie... then it would fulfill his wish, wouldn't it?" The Sect Leader replied nonchalantly.
Similar situations to that of the Azure Emperor Sect were occurring continuously among various sects in the State of Outcloud. No one wanted to believe that Ling Mo Xie had no support behind him.
Ling Mo Xie's sudden rise had already astonished them. Later, with martial arts competitions and alchemy events bringing one surprise after another, they didn't think much of it since it didn't concern them directly. But now that Ling Mo Xie had gained recognition from the Daoist sect and such a strange beast appeared by his side, they couldn't help but ponder further.
This sudden realization made them exclaim; three years ago, Ling Mo Xie was still considered useless. How did he reach this height in such a short time? Even if their sects put all their resources into cultivating someone, they couldn't turn a useless person into a genius so quickly!
However, if Ling Mo Xie knew of their misunderstanding, he would probably laugh heartily. Although there was no one behind me, I have the System! Isn't that better than some so-called experts?
