Ling Mo Xie followed Xu Qingfeng, and along the way, he was overwhelmed by the sights. Although he was only seeing the tip of the iceberg of the Taoist Sect, it still made him feel a deep sense of awe.
Truly, as the leader of the Cultivation World, it resembled a fairyland with various gentle and visually appealing Spirit Beasts wandering about. Countless palaces and towers did not give off a sense of luxury; instead, they felt ancient and imbued with spirit, uplifting his mood.
Moreover, since this mountain gate was established on Tianzhu Mountain, it was higher than the clouds, creating an illusion that everything beneath him was Bai Yun. The light Bai Yun drifting nearby made this place seem like a celestial realm, leaving him bewildered—could this truly be the immortal world?
Amidst this stunning ethereality, there was also a unique sense of authority that made one hesitant to act recklessly. Even the usually lively Hong Chi obediently followed Ling Mo Xie without causing any trouble.
After walking for a while with Xu Qingfeng, Ling Mo Xie saw ahead a tall and grand hall. The hall was quite large and spacious; even the entrance was wide enough to accommodate many people passing through simultaneously. It was indeed a palace of the Taoist Sect, showcasing great grandeur. However, there was an oppressive feeling emanating from within.
Xu Qingfeng stopped not far from the palace and said to Ling Mo Xie, "The Gate Master is inside the hall, and not just the Gate Master; all the Grand Elders of the Taoist Sect and their disciples are here as well. Be careful; those Elder's disciples might try to intimidate you."
"Got it, thank you for the reminder, Brother Xu," Ling Mo Xie nodded and smiled at Xu Qingfeng. Even before entering, he could already sense the unfriendly atmosphere coming from inside.
Xu Qingfeng looked at Ling Mo Xie, sighed, and nodded. "Alright then, let's go in! Once we're inside, I might not be able to protect you anymore. But since the Gate Master values you so much, they probably won't dare to be too unruly in front of him."
Xu Qingfeng expressed his thoughts to Ling Mo Xie and gestured for him to enter.
Ling Mo Xie did not hold back and led the way into the palace.
As he approached, he found that this palace was even larger and more imposing than he had imagined. There was a long flight of stairs leading up to it, flanked by a row of vigilant Taoist Sect guards. Each guard exuded an extraordinary presence, at least on par with Ling Mo Xie.
Seeing this scene made Ling Mo Xie bitterly smile inwardly; it seemed that at his current level, he could only qualify as a gatekeeper in the Taoist Sect.
When he reached the entrance of the hall, Ling Mo Xie's mood darkened further. The guards stationed at the door were actually disciples in the early stages of Tribulation. Did this mean he didn't even qualify to stand guard?
Although the Taoist Sect is indeed a titan in the Cultivation World with countless high-level cultivators within its ranks, it shouldn't be that every gatekeeper is at the Tribulation Period level. This was clearly arranged by those Elder's disciples to give Ling Mo Xie a taste of humility and make him aware of his insignificance.
As for explaining about the Gate Master? Naturally, it had to be grand when he made an appearance; otherwise, it would undermine the authority of the Taoist Sect and fail to intimidate any potential troublemakers.
The Daoist Sect Leader could see through their intentions but chose not to say anything. If such tactics could truly intimidate Ling Mo Xie, then he would have to admit he misjudged him.
Even within the hall, the Daoist Sect Leader rarely showed himself. Few could see the true face of the Gate Master when he appeared publicly; thus, his public appearance naturally sparked curiosity among many who wanted to see what kind of person sat high above them in power. They were disappointed to find that the Gate Master sat behind a thin veil; they wouldn't be foolish enough to use their spiritual senses to look through it but could only sigh in regret.
As soon as Ling Mo Xie entered, he saw in the center of the hall a layer of green gauze curtains obscuring someone behind them. On either side stood two rows of seats occupied by nine Elders, each accompanied by their disciples.
It was unclear whether it was for symmetry or some other reason; although there were ten seats in total on either side, only nine Elders were present. Was that missing Elder someone who could refuse a summons from the Gate Master? That didn't seem right either; at least they should have sent their disciple in their place.
Ling Mo Xie could not figure out the reason behind it, because just as he was puzzled, a pressure suddenly surged towards him from an unknown source.
This pressure was all too familiar to him; it was the oppressive force of a Cultivator.
It seemed these people were indeed getting impatient, Ling Mo Xie thought to himself. Although he had fallen into a rigid state, he still rolled his eyes around, trying to find out where this pressure was coming from.
But he quickly gave up. These people were truly skilled at acting. Each Elder sat in their place, looking at Ling Mo Xie with calm expressions, while the disciples behind them stood straight-faced and expressionless.
However, Ling Mo Xie did not notice that while he was looking around, the person sitting on the Gate Master throne seemed to sense something and turned to glance at the Grand Elder's Third Disciple.
The moment that person caught the gaze of the Gate Master, he shivered all over and hurriedly withdrew the pressure from Ling Mo Xie. Ling Mo Xie moved his limbs a bit and felt much more cautious. Fortunately, once he was under pressure, he would fall into a rigid state and wouldn’t make a fool of himself.
Otherwise, in front of so many people and especially in front of the Daoist Sect Leader, if he were to embarrass himself, the one who released the pressure would likely take advantage of it.
The Grand Elder's Third Disciple observed that Ling Mo Xie had not embarrassed himself, as if nothing had happened. His gaze deepened with resentment as he thought, you’re lucky this time! Hmph! A lowly brat like you, what right do you have to gain the favor of the Gate Master and be granted the Daoist Order Decree?
Naturally, they dared not voice any objections to the Gate Master's decision, but they had plenty of opinions about Ling Mo Xie.
Some were eager to find an opportunity to teach him a lesson.
“You are Ling Mo Xie? Hahaha! Good, good! You truly look like a talented individual. Not only do you have skills in saving lives, but you also possess a kind heart; you should be rewarded!” The Daoist Sect Leader was the first to speak.
Upon hearing the words of the Gate Master, Ling Mo Xie was secretly astonished. How come I didn’t know I was so great? However, since others were praising him, he naturally wouldn’t refuse. He simply smiled lightly and replied respectfully, “Gate Master, you flatter me too much. In the Cultivation World, even in my best field of Alchemy, there are many who are better than me. I believe if they encountered such situations, they would also step forward; I just happened to be at the right place at the right time.”
“At the right place at the right time! Hahaha! Yes, at the right place at the right time; that’s what we call destiny!” The Gate Master laughed heartily.
Yet, Ling Mo Xie felt puzzled in his heart; why did that voice sound so familiar? It was strange; he shouldn’t have met the Daoist Sect Leader before!
Just as the Daoist Sect Leader was about to continue speaking, a young man beside the Second Elder stepped forward respectfully and said to the Daoist Sect Leader, “Gate Master, I have long heard that Ling Mo Xie is known as a once-in-a-thousand-years genius in Alchemy. You know that my Master’s lineage specializes in Alchemy within the Taoist Sect, so I would like to exchange ideas with Ling Mo Xie. May I?”
The Daoist Sect Leader looked deeply at him for a moment, causing that person to tremble slightly with fear and regret for suddenly intervening in this matter.
However, to his surprise, the Gate Master calmly replied, “Sure. You young people should exchange ideas; it’s good for improving your skills.”
The young man immediately showed a look of joy and hurriedly thanked the Daoist Sect Leader, saying, “Thank you for your approval, Gate Master. I have long wanted to meet and spar with the real deal after hearing about Ling Mo Xie’s great name.”
The Daoist Sect Leader knew very well what was on his mind and naturally did not take his grandiose words to heart.
The person naturally did not genuinely want to have a friendly spar with Ling Mo Xie; instead, he was thinking that he was a disciple of the Second Elder of the Taoist Sect, and that the Second Elder's lineage was known for Alchemy. Although the Taoist Sect was not famous for Alchemy, they were certainly stronger than Ling Mo Xie in this regard.
Thus, the young man believed he had victory in hand. In his mind, Ling Mo Xie was valued by the Gate Master because of Alchemy. If he could defeat Ling Mo Xie in Alchemy, would the Gate Master not see that there were even more talented individuals within his own sect? He thought that not only would he not receive the Daoist Order Decree, but he would also gain more attention from the Gate Master.
This would both undermine Ling Mo Xie and benefit himself; why not take advantage of it?
So, when he saw that the Daoist Sect Leader agreed to his challenge against Ling Mo Xie, he felt extremely pleased.
The other disciples behind the Second Elder were momentarily stunned by the young man's actions, then they sighed inwardly, wondering why they hadn't thought of this themselves. They had missed out on a great opportunity!
They were all disciples of the Second Elder and naturally skilled in Alchemy. A few even believed their Alchemy skills surpassed those of the young man. Unfortunately, they were not as quick-witted as him and failed to seize the moment.
At this time, the Daoist Sect Leader also looked at Ling Mo Xie and asked him, "What do you think? If you are unwilling, I will not force you."
Upon hearing the Gate Master's words, the young man's heart nearly leaped into his throat. He truly did not expect the Gate Master to seek Ling Mo Xie's opinion.
After all, the Gate Master was known for his iron-fisted approach within the Taoist Sect; he was someone who rarely sought others' opinions over the years.
The young man was even more worried that Ling Mo Xie would reject his proposal, which would ruin all his fantasies.
Although Ling Mo Xie did not want to compete with the young man either—since constantly using the System's Alchemy Room to dominate others lacked a sense of achievement—he felt compelled to agree since the Daoist Sect Leader had already given his approval. Thus, he nodded in agreement.
